I've spoken to Sonny Suttles several times over the past few years and also have a peened VA Malatesta as one of my favorite Euro swords... that being said, I have doubts about Sonny cutting corners to save $. In any case, good to hear no one was hurt from the broken blade. Cheers.

First of all, I have never bought from SON or any of their "other" sites, so this is only based on reading and seeing other people's insights into them. The "company" is based in TX, but as has been shown, it's really just a guy who orders swords from the dreaded Ryansword company. All I will say about Ryansword is that they have a very, very sordid past here on SBG, other online forums, and on Facebook. I personally would avoid SON and Ryansword, looking at Huawei as a much better alternative (Huawei has both an eBay store and a store on Alibaba). Others will probably jump in with personal information, as mine is only anecdotal.

Love the sword but how is it held together I don't see any mekugi? I believe, but can't remember with 100% certainty, that it is double pinned but they are hidden. It's not removable, but that's not a problem for me. It's truly solid as a rock, no movement or give whatsoever. Unless requested by the customer, the sword is permanently attached to the Kevlar/carbon fiber reinforced "tsuka"... from Point Gallery's FAQ: "Q: Are the handles removable? A: Handles are not removable. Traditional removal for oiling is not required as the tangs are completely sealed and dirt and moisture can't get in. It is possible for a handle to be built to be removed but the cost is extremely high. Contact me if you seriously need this as an option" www.pointgallery.com/sword/pages/faq.htm

As the title says. Looking for a good school. Try E-budo.com - you have to join the forum, but then have access to all of the site, including info on dojos all over. Once you log in, scroll down to Sword Arts > Sword Arts Dojo Finder You can then go to the right side of the page and click on Search Forum or you can post a new thread asking for help finding a dojo in your area. Good luck!

Daryl Kyle (Texas Steel Props/Point Gallery) is a great guy to deal with. Really nice sword you have there.

Only kindle as far as I can see. Will there be an epub version? There's a free program called Calibre that allows conversion from one e format to another, and also serves as a library for all of your e books. You can convert from .mobi to .epub to another format extremely easily Here's a link to the program: calibre-ebook.com

A sociopath will co-opt the legitimate fears or angers of regular people and warp them into a rationale for their atrocities. Their narcissistic delusions drive them to feel important, as if what they do will be seen as justified or even heroic when in truth, they speak for no one but themselves. The shooter, whose name I won’t give further acknowledgement to, didn’t commit abdominal acts in response to other recent events, he used those events as an excuse to commit abdominal acts which he was itching to commit anyway. This isn’t what the world has come to, it’s what it’s always been. We’ve always had sociopaths among us, but they are not us. Anyone can commit criminal acts given the right circumstances, but not anyone can become a sociopath, they are wired differently than the rest of us. It isn’t a police vs citizen, black vs white, order vs chaos thing. This can be seen in the near universal desire of people to work together to find solutions to complex issues and the near universal sorrow over tragic events. We disagree about what to do to make things better, but we generally all do want things to be better. As the world evolves, things do get better, then things change or grow in some new way and maybe get bad during these growing pains, and then begin to get better again. Sociopaths jump into our issues to feel important, but we shouldn’t believe for a moment that they in any way reflect the nature of our society. A sociopath isn’t a police officer or citizen, a black man or white man, a law abider or a criminal, those things are just their outer covering. Very well said BB.

It's been said many times before on this forum and social media that Swords of the Northshire is a reseller based in TX who buys and resells Ryansword exclusively. While some people might not mind, if you do your research on Ryansword, you'll see that they have a LONG list of complaints against them for their misrepresentation of items and very questionable business practices.
I've personally never bought anything from SoN or Ryanswords, so my information is anecdotal EXCEPT for when Ryanswords was using the "Tinker" name and using it for some of their euro swords without permission from Michael Tinker Pierce, and also making unlicensed reproductions of movie/TV swords.

Very good thread Jussi Ekholm... I tend to agree with most of what's been already said. I also have a couple of antiques, but mainly modern pieces for training, etc. I do use my Enpo era nihonto for kata, and have cut tatami with it once, but won't do tameshigiri with it again. Kata on the other hand is something else, and don't see anything wrong with that. I think all of you hit the nail on the head when it comes to "feel" vs "maker" - what feels good to someone might feel totally wrong to someone else. Thanks again for the thread - very interesting read from you all.

I'll admit that the general feeling of the SBG forum is different from many years ago when I first discovered it and before I joined. Yes, FB and other social media like it opens up lots of "competition" for the lack of a better word, and people do tend to run by different rules there. But, I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing for this forum, I think it's a good thing, seeing as there's less drama (for the most part) than social media, which is built for instant gratification.
As for M&V posting more, I'd also like to see that. But as for myself, I try my best, but sometimes my job, plus my store, my family, and my training makes it hard to do so, not to mention specific rules we have to abide by. I'm sure others are in the same boat as I am or even more so.
In any case, when in doubt, I always return to this forum when I need new information, or to search for info that others have already stated before, even from years past - social media is light years behind with that function, and I don't see it changing any time soon.

Someone on the SBG FB page was talking a few days ago about one he bought, I think is was a Monarch... one thing to consider though is that the Herald series are lower end DSA's made in India to their specs, so they will be lower quality than regular DSA's

This - unarmed/knife against sword - is the core scenario that aikido is built around. Get out of the way of the attack, close, throw, pin, and then go to work with the knife. I agree with Timo Nieminen... Aikido has several kata that deal with defending from sword attacks. Move out of the way, defend, throw/pin, and end it. Aside from that, like mentioned before by others, if you can, leave the situation. If you can't, then defend yourself to the best of your ability.
