I was wondering if any of my fellow forumites know any resources for aftermarket saya? I've got a few Kat's that could benefit from some better fitted saya. I was doing routine maintenance and noticed that my old Valiant Armoury 1601 Katana has a super nice, very slim almond shaped saya. The VA saya is about 1/2 the thickness of the cheness mokko ko-kat saya that its paired up with. So at this point i realized that most of the other saya on my blades are the same old standard fat, weightless glossy crap that comes with every flea market blade ever made. I was hoping some of you might be able to suggest a vendor that deals in higher quality saya. I realize the somewhat piece specific nature of the saya to the sword, but most of my blades fall within the typical norms of sori, width etc. I'm also aware that i might have to go custom or make my own, but was hoping someone could point me somewhere besides ebay. I've already looked at the saya blanks from nihozashi, and wo uld prefer to spend a few bucks on a decent replacement as opposed to getting all anal and wasting time making one for a blade not worth that much time. Thanks in advance for any suggestions you guys may offer.

Honestly, i'm kinda surprised. It actually looks really good for 116.00!! For that price, one cant expect much at all, but looking at the pics, i'd say you did pretty damned good. What blade steel? Is it differentially or through hardened? alternating ito, relatively flush at f/k and makes the tsuka look pretty good, and considering the price i'm surprised. The samegawa in the pics looks questionable, and the mekugi need to be rounded, but if that same is real, consider me impressed.

Gunnar, I didn't come here to make friends or get support from folks that can't do anything to help other than to question the facts (which is not helpful by the way -- everything I have stated is a FACT). I posted here to warn others of what can happen with their sword order from SBG. And if you can make heads or tails of "Go to sword site he will love you ago with all his other charaters he post under." then you are certainly a better linguist than I am. The Fact is,...the above statement is not true. The wait time from the original scheduled delivery date is still a day short of 6 weeks,.......nowhere near your rant of waiting 5 months, and i've even given you the benefit of counting saturdays and sundays.

your wait can only be considered to have started AFTER february 15th, as that was the initial expected date of delivery. So you have waited just over a month by my account. Things do happen, and your disrespectful tone wont help you in any of lifes challenges. I'm going on 10 months over expected delivery with a custom sword, and although it's frustrating, it is what it is. To describe the situation as "criminal" is libelous to say the least, especially considering that you "bought in" knowing there was at least a wait till february 15th. Put your big boy pants on.

I'm primarily into Medieval Euro's. I do like a GOOD fantasy piece as well, and for functional swords i'll pick up a euro over a katana any day. The katana though is really a thing of understated beauty to me. I cant indulge the katana fanboy crap that goes on all over the place, but in reality i do think a well done katana is one of the most beautiful weapons ever made.

make sure not to use "cheap" vinyl. Try to stick with something like 5 year exterior grade with a good adhesive. You also wanna make sure to clean the blade as well as you can before starting. This should all be covered in any tut's you find. I think chris peroni did an etchant bath with a euro pommel that he cut the template by hand and he wasn't real happy with the results. Curves are a pain in the butt with an exacto, so i've used my ruby tipped leather knife for paint masks on motorcycle jobs with great results, but i'm not sure how well it'll cross over with the difference in paint consistency vs. etchant etc. My real concern is the submersion method. I'm afraid of bleeding under the mask, so i've set aside anold windlass blade that is getting polished up before i try that one.

I wouldnt expect Fable to take on such a commission, but Ernie at Yeshua's sword would more than likely take on something like that without much trouble at all. You should check out his work on "Little Stars", a middle earth inspired falchion with Sindarin script and other details. Ernie did that one with a high speed rotary tool. I'm thinking his is more of a converted dentists drill, but i could be wrong. Electrochemical etching can produce good clean results too, as demonstrated by Brenno, Jeffrey Robinson and some others. I would probably recommend electro-etching if you're not confident with your hand for a rotary tool. A good vinyl mask can be made by anyone with a vinyl plotter/cutter, and then you simply help the etchant and electricity do their thing. There are tutorials for the electro chemical process here and elsewhere on the net. I'm getting ready to do a few blades of my own , and will be expirimenting with both aforementioned methods as well as simply masking and soaking in a tank of etchant.

Good to ask. No need to bust people out for asking. If you're referring to me, I'm not busting on anyone just having a little fun with it. But I really think if we allow things not related to swords to be sold here it will get out of hand. Next this forum will become Craiges List 2 with all the spammers taking it over. And yes I think the computer should be pulled off too. After all this is a sword forum isn't it. When your "fun" comes at someone elses expense,....it's ,...well,....busting on them. but i also have a funny feeling you already knew that, but as long as it has a smiley,...that changes everything

Carve it for sure. It's got a nice shape to it. I'd slim it down a little bit, maybe touch the bevels a bit to get the weight down some, Then, after you lay out the design you can remove even more to add contour and depth. Pic's make it look like theres plenty there to work with, and for carving; thats better than not having enough. For me it's pretty tough to beat a good wood scabbard.

both of those are good questions that i was going to ask. I'm also confused by the big fella(Jen?)being followed by the lil guy in the yellow cloak. Am i reading it wrong, or was Jen described both as a man , and then as a woman (after removal of her(his) helmet?) I found myself quite confused at the village gate knowing who the players are

As Dannar trimmed the last bits of fat from the venison haunch that Dal had handed him from the hanger and laid it on the table amidst the fresh thyme, rosemary and sage,he couldn't help but feel an overwhelming sense of guilt for the conversation he knew he'd soon have with his life long friend. Although Dannar was a hardened warrior he longed for a simpler life, and the fact that his discussion will forever change the fates of those he cares most deeply about, he is certain that Dal is the key to their upcoming adventure. "I was certain we were done with war and death" he angrily muttered to himself, as he felt the rage building inside him. "I thought i was done burying comrades" he continued, and as the frustration and anger welled up within his thoughts, he was brought back to the moment by shouts of aggression coming from the direction of the village gate.
"WHAT NOW" he almost shouted, as the words were released well before his sense of guilt and frustration had completely subsided. Dannar stood up hastily while snatching his blade, Houndstooth, from its resting place against the big willow that gently covered the small yard of Dal's home. As he strode toward the village gate, gracefully slipping the blade through his waistband, he couldn't help but wonder if he'd ever see such peace and beauty again. As Dannar reached the end of the gravel road leading from Dal's place to the village proper, he noticed the hulking shadow of the most recent oddity to enter this sleepy little village.
"I'd ask if you were born in a barn Jen, but sadly the way you smell tells me that you did indeed" and before the big female dog could even tell where that voice had come from, Dannar had spanned the last 40 feet between them in an instant and gave her an open handed slap to the back of the head with enough enough force that the resounding SLAP could be heard two doors down. "That was for Renzo you stupid cow" Dannar said as his face changed from friendly and inquisitive to stern and demanding, "so what is it exactly that brings you to this village?"

This was a nice surprise this morning, and i knew where it was going as soon as i saw it. The hard part, especially when every new participant needs to bring a character, is integrating them into the story seamlessy. So with that, i'll allow the next participant to add the content of Danaar's discussion so that they might have an easier time introducing their character if necessary.
