I saw I couldn't browse the forum today as a guest. As I'm doing about 95% of my forum visits as a guest I am wondering if this will be a future feature of the forum?

I haven't logged out on any of my devices in ages, how badly is it restricted?
Guess I could pop open an incognito tab and see for myself...
Edit: Wow, completely blocked? Really? That's pretty useless, isn't it?

Interesting...tried to get on from my phone & got a "Guests must Login" page. Wasn't like that yesterday.

Yep, I was also doing most of my browsing not logged in (different devices). Had to reset my pasword to get in as well :/. (edit: just read the post about the login changes: all lowercase usernames required).

Lowercase usernames? Well, I'm baffled. Either the forum software is being stupid or the admins are messing with us again...

Didn't block this morning. Don't recall seeing any announcement on a format change. Not that we haven't had glitches before...

This practice will discourage new people from coming in to the forums. If I was new, and wanting to take a look at these forums, that message would make me go elsewhere rather than registering.
Edited to add: It's still blocking for me, Dave.

I can see letting guest browse the site to see if they want to join but they shouldn't be allowed to comment or post unless they're members.

That's how it used to be, Gunnar. Heck, I only registered years ago because I wanted to ask a question about a sword featured in a review that caught my eye. If I'd googled said sword, found the review link, and been greeted with a big blue splash page telling me to login or register I'd have just said "F**k that" and moved on.
When we first moved (back) to the current host, guest comments were enabled, and for the most part it was fine, but as with all things it got a bit unruly so was disabled. Now this? This is extreme.

Maybe it's a side effect of something they're trying to adjust. Thankfully, my saved login info worked just fine. -Josh

That's the same thing I get when I go to my Viking Age Forum. I don't think it's a hassel to log on first but it helps keep spammers off the site. That's probably because they've found some spammers on this site recently..

My first thought was the site had been hacked and it was a ploy to get peoples passwords, but checked out the URL and what the log-in button led to and decided it was the real thing.

Actually it was me. I just changed the setting back.
Had complaints about guests without accounts being able to post. In the forum settings, you can require guests to register before being allowed to post. Appears a side effect of selecting this option is what you folks experienced which is non-logged in people cannot access the forum at all.
Anyway, back to normal and guests can post as there is no separate setting to change it and allow everyone to access the forum.

I'd thought we'd found a way to disable guest posting some time ago? Did some update "fix" that again?

What's the point of having memberships if anyone can post? It's like you're having a picnic at a park and someone walks over and wants to join in but won't even tell you who they are.

I'm willing to bet something like 95% of our "members" either have never posted or have less than ten posts. What's the point there?
Guest posting let's passers-by ask questions without the hassle is signing up, while we members can get notifications, send personal messages, and enjoy other benefits.

Many of our customs seem strange to you and the same is true of yours. For example, not introducing yourself is considered extremely rude, even among enemies.
