I recently removed some rust from blade oil off of a katana I purchased, unfortunately upon doing so I noticed the blade had received a series of strange marking all along the blade, I am quite new to sword cleaning and was hoping an expert could assist me on fixing these issues as I'm at a loss on what to do after much research, the blade is a 30th anniversary musashi katana from hanwei, ill upload pictures aswell from the markings, much appreciation from any help

If I had it in my hand I could tell for sure, but I *think* you're seeing the pattern welds in the layers of steel, and they are slightly discolored.
If you have some metal polish maybe that will remove and hide them, but I am not a katana guy, so I may be preaching heresy. I polish everything to mirror or I sand it flat gray...so take my advice with a grain of salt.

Also not an expert - but these look like stains/extremely light surface rust from grease that's partially dried as a long term storage solution. I had marks like this on an old Windlass piece that I bought, which had the grease almost dried off of it.
I polished them away with metal polish - but... I'd be careful doing that with a DH blade such as this. Especially folded!
Again, I'm no expert - someone else could probably chime in with better advice - that is just what it looks like to me. How did you remove the rust that was on it?

How did you remove the rust that was on it? I'd also like to know. That way it could be narrowed down a bit. Looks like the layers of steel that have patinated (not rust it seems) at a different rate than the other layers.
