My personal preference is a POB of between 4-6"... I don't like an overly tip heavy blade (not really good for Iai/good Budo), and too close to the tsuba makes it feel "weird" to me. But, to each his own. My preference has to do with the iaitos and shinken I've trained with over the years, all of them having their POB in the area mentioned above.

Update: still have the knives, and still use them for almost all of my cooking needs (smaller one mostly). I sharpened the smaller one recently using my Wicked Edge, yowza! Sharp! The larger one still has it's original edge, also sharper than a razor.

it looks like a fine blade shape, but I just don't trust the steel type, since there are so many similar (same?) knives listed as 9Cc13MoV, 8Cr13MoV, D2, and other types. Hope yours live up to your expectations.

I tend to agree with Timo... you're never really too old to join Iaido. The dojo I attend has students from 16 - late 60's... my sensei has adapted some of the seitei gata techniques for the older members who can't do them from a kneeling position. As long as you're willing to learn and you're physically capable of handling a sword, there shouldn't be an age limit to starting Iaido.

Please consider donating to the Tovar/Perrez family and/or keeping them in your thoughts... my wife's cousin Clarisa was killed in the accident, and her 8 yr old daughter Caitlin (crash happened on her birthday), suffered a severely fractured skull. Clarisa's husband Mark got a few bumps and bruises, but nothing serious, and their 2 older kids (both in middle school) were fortunately not in the car with them. Some good news about Caitlin: within the past couple of days, she's been able to wiggle her toes on command, recognizing her brothers, and just yesterday, was able to read a Get Well card to the neurologist! Anyway, just thought I'd share with you all the link to their go fund me page: www.gofundme.com/kq9eq3xg

You might want to look into the possibility that you're bipolar. Your friend too. Bipolar is often misdiagnosed as depression, and when medication is given as if it's depression it tends to make it worse. That you can talk about it, and are aware that something is wrong, is a good start. Very true... my wife was diagnosed at a young age with depression, but it wasn't until her late 30's that she was diagnosed as having type 2 bipolar disorder (the toughest one to have/treat). Like Scott said, I would definitely ask the dr about checking for bipolar disorder since the meds for "regular" depression (if you can even call it that) can have a detrimental impacts on people with bipolar disorder.

Depression is a disease that strikes many people across the globe... some have mild depression, others severe depression, but because of social stigmas, men are seen as being a "wuss" for being depressed, having to "man up". Women are seen as frail creatures who are giving into their femininity. Bull. Like others have mentioned, depression can be short lived, or can last a lifetime... you can't just walk it off. Check out the comic below, and then the vid linked to afterwards
AsapSCIENCE have a great video on the science of depression, check it out here: bit.ly/1uiI3wK

Like MOK mentioned above, it's a Microtech Jagdkommando and are expesive, usually running over $840 for the full size ones... it's most likely illegal almost everywhere in the states, due to it having 3 cutting edges.

use a rust neutraliser such as Naval Jelly then a light polish with a Dremel brush, this will stop the pit from growing with out removing more metal Japanese togis also add lacquer to the pitting to seal it and prevent it from growing.

Like many people above, I too was a product of the 80's... all the usual movies/shows, but also got interested in Beowulf, LOTR, and Arthurian tales with an introduction to them from my 7th and 8th grade English teachers. Flash forward several year later, and after Conan came out, Excalibur and then Highlander hit me light a ton of bricks. The Highlander TV show was when I really started my sword collecting phase, buying several SLO's including a Marto Duncan katana. On top of movies/tv shows, I began studying martial arts in the very early 80's, starting out with JKD, and then moved on to Aikido in the late 80's... I still practice Aikido till this day, and have studied several other JMA's too, eventually leading me to my Iaido dojo when I found out that (finally) Iaido was being offered near where I live (prior to that, the closest JSA dojo was at least 4 hrs away). So, truth to tell, lots of things have led me on the path I'm on today, including my treks in the UK (England, Wales [Anglesey (Ynys Môn)], and Scotland [Glen Finnan/Loch Shiel]), plus my education in medieval English lit, and training in JMA/JSA.
I almost forgot to mention Star Wars! My younger brother and I used to have plastic lightsabers that made the "force" sound when swung around back in the 80's when Return of the Jedi came out... I always used the green one while my brother used the red one - those were fun times until we eventually wore (broke) the lightsabers out.

A sword to me is more than a tool - it's an extension of who I am. As an avid practitioner of JMA/JSA for many, many years (on top of watching tons of movies with swords/knives, and also studying medieval English literature/Arthurian tales in college), I love looking at them, handling them, and cutting with them. I kind of liken having/using a sword to the Samurai's perspective - it's the soul of the person wielding it (at least that's how I feel about mine ).
