A sword to me is more than a tool - it's an extension of who I am. As an avid practitioner of JMA/JSA for many, many years (on top of watching tons of movies with swords/knives, and also studying medieval English literature/Arthurian tales in college), I love looking at them, handling them, and cutting with them. I kind of liken having/using a sword to the Samurai's perspective - it's the soul of the person wielding it (at least that's how I feel about mine ).

I was inspired by the recent "how did you get interested in swords" thread to ask a question and learn more about the users on this forum. So, what does/do your sword(s) mean to you? How do you feel towards it/them? Is it just a tool or something more? I might post my response to this question later if I feel like exposing just how cringey I am :P Being around here too long I see no reason to explain my need for swords any more than I already have. Just go thru my collection page and I believe you will be able to reach your own conclusion as to what swords mean to me. If you doubt your own ablities to do so may I just include my most recent photo of myself:

The sword is a tool for me. But a tool that can teach you about old times and you.

Hope he will reconsider this. We all enjoy our study and possession of splendid arms. No reason to be ashamed of aesthetic love of these classic weapons or the romance of history. ( Romance meaning to obscure the brutal reality of the practice of arms, in favor of the compelling stories of power and glory derived by the survivors :) .)

I would appear that the author of the thread has decided his question and discussion was just too personal and exposed to continue. That's exactly what happened. My views on this topic are too embarrassing and childish to share with the world. I originally was never going to post them at all. I deleted my posts because I've only been on this forum for a couple months, and I frankly don't need people's (first) impressions of me to be that I am childish and stupid. I'm surprised that I haven't deleted my account yet after some of my other posts, tbh. Hope he will reconsider this. Maybe much later after this topic is buried and everyone forgets about it.

If you don't make mistakes you aren't trying. What is embarassing today will make a fine annecdote to bother your children with later. Life is full of embarrassments. Learn to laugh at them. It's what you do after you drop your pants around your ankles that is more important.

To me they are a link to history, a time where I would rather have lived.

I see them as function art in some cases very high art. They are made to do serious things and in that way being made beautiful and still remaining functional is a testament to the artist.

Here goes. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ My sword is much more important to me than any other thing that I own. I think that I could still manage to be happy even if I lost all of my possessions except for my sword. It's more of a companion than a possession. No matter how depressed or angry I get or how crappy things are going, I can count on my sword to be there for me. I even named it (Kieran). And yes, I'm aware of the fact that it's a weapon and that the main reason swords exist is to kill people. But my feelings about it still stand.

Nothing wrong with having attachment. I'm attached to my swords. I spend more time practicing than I do playing video games or messing with any other of my possessions. You shouldn't feel bad about your passion.

Don't mind him Frostion. It's fine to have some attachment to your sword. That's why we're here.

Talk about attachment. My first sword was given to me by my brother 10 years ago. It isn't even a real sword, it is those kung fu stainless steel sword. But in the event of a fire, if I ever go homeless, I am sure that this sword is the first thing that I would take with me. I've never gone as far as naming it, but solely because I never felt the need to.
That piece of metal has so much meaning to me that I wish it to be buried with me. Some people made fun of me already for the attachment I have with it but I don't freaking care. I am just happy that I can feel so much sympathy for it.
Answering the original topic, I felt inspired to tell a little story.
I was born with a disease called Spina Bifida. It has many many effects, but the one that matters here is that some muscles in my leg are atrophied. As a kid I never got to play sports, walked with some pain and difficulty to that matter. So I had as a fact that I was a handicapped person. But it all changed when I joined the kung fu school my brother taught at. After some effort, for the first time I was able to challenge my own preconceived mind and for the first freaking time I got to do some kind of sport where not only my handicap was not so horribly visible but with time I became a senior myself and achieved respect within the people who were there. Of course there are plenty limitations to what I can actually perform, but I learned that they didn't matter, and I learned to give myself a chance to challenge and wonder if those are real or self imposed limitations
So the sword to me represents willpower, family bonds, represents a shift from a handicapped person, who was always seen as a poor baby to a valued person.
And yes Frostion, I agree with you. My sword means to me more than any other possession I have. Car? People trade it year in year out. My personal library? Can always slowly buy them back. Video games that costs much more? They get outdated. Brand clothes? I never cared about it.

An idiot is a stupid person. Stupid is lacking in knowledge or common sense. You posted an opinion. An opinion is a judgment on something that isn't necessarily formed from knowledge on something. By definition, you are not an idiot for posting your opinion on something that isn't based on fact. Be happy you like swords. Your thread was good enough that everyone here except one has had something positive to say. Don't let the small negative comments overrule the good parts of the thread.

Swords to me are a connection to the past. I have always enjoyed history and swords were a part of the history of man. Even fantasy/movie swords that are modern culture will be a part of history. I don't have a connection to any sword in my collection but one.

Anyway, what does my sword mean to me? Good question...not much. I lose attachment to objects and usually end up seeking another and selling my previous one after I have accomplished profiling and polishing it. Onto the next one I say but who knows. Maybe I'll come across a sword one day that underneath the mirror polish and etched hamon is still one fine ass, curved and well defined blade. Any kind of nihonto, baring showata blades, I would treat with respect and admiration. I know how much time and effort goes into them, especially during polishing stages. But I swords are all work and practice to me now. I'm never satisfied and always crave more.
