Reviewing swords is definitely a lot of fun. I broke out the calipers tonight for a sword I just received. I'm in total zen mode now.

Well it seems word has gotten out. Eight first time posters looking for free swords. 😏 Deleted my post. Happy now? Not at all. Just commenting on an observation. Please put your name back in the hat if you want to.

I'm in the SF Bay area, California. Interested in Japanese swords.
I'm a life-long martial artist (Tae Kwon Do & Aikido), though have only trained formally in batto-jutsu for the last year. Cleaning/repairing/customizing katanas for my dojo has led to something of an obsessive lockdown hobby. I'm also a professional writer who has published novels, short stories, articles, and reviews. My only sword reviews so far are for purchases here, here, and here (they're under my name, Steve Boyett).
It's pretty great of SBG to reach out to its membership for this opportunity -- it isn't something that comes along all that often, I'd think!
I've lurked this forum for about a year, picking up a wealth of information and sourcing for my repairs and mods. I haven't felt knowledgeable or proficient enough to post, but the latest SBG newsletter calling for reviewers was hard to resist.

I'm a reader of SFF and I've seen Ariel and Elegy Beach around before - adding them to my TBR spreadsheet! I'm the least knowledgeable and least proficient around, but I'm trying to not let it stop me. Welcome. I don't want to derail the thread, so I'll just say thank you very much!

Hello! I'm a longtime lurker of SBG and the SBG Facebook group. I have not reviewed a sword yet but I'm in the process of starting a YouTube channel dedicated to sword reviews and Historical European Martial Arts topics geared toward the HEMA beginner. I have a complete channel outline that I can share if anyone's interested. State and Country: Los Angeles, CA, USA Preferred Sword Type: Medieval, Renaissance, Napoleonic/early modern European swords are my specialty, but I'm interested in getting into Japanese swords and other genres. My Credentials: My collection consists mostly of mass-produced replicas of European swords on the more affordable end of the spectrum, and that's what I'd like to focus on in my reviews--entry-level swords that offer a good balance of functionality, durability, and value for the money. I am a novice HEMA practitioner with two years experience training with Tattershall School of Defense in Long Beach, CA. I love fencing and can't wait to get back to it after this pandemic. Though I have yet to review a sword, I am not new to product reviews. I have 15 years experience as an automotive journalist, with the last 10 of those spent at Motor Trend. In my reviews I try to put myself in the shoes of the intended customer of a given product and evaluate from that perspective. I also believe in full transparency and disclosure when it comes to products given to me by a manufacturer for review purposes and try to the best of my ability to adhere to a code of journalistic ethics. Here are a few reviews and other pieces I've written: www.motortrend.com/cars/chrysler/pacifica/2018/2018-chrysler-pacifica-long-term-verdict/ www.motortrend.com/news/thinkware-f800-pro-dash-cam-review-in-kia-stinger-gt/www.motortrend.com/cars/subaru/legacy/2020/2020-subaru-legacy-pros-and-cons-review/www.motortrend.com/news/2019-honda-cr-v-ex-l-fwd-why-id-buy-it/ www.motortrend.com/news/early-ford-gt40-prototype-sketches/Since I haven't launched my channel yet I'm not looking for swords to review anytime soon. However, I would be honored to be considered for the opportunity in the future! Thanks for your time, Alex at Arms

So, I received and tested the first sample sword this week. It was a Shikoto T10 Hidden Samurai clay-tempered katana from BudK.
My written review is posted as well in the review subforum. Looking forward to seeing the other reviews!

Your a professional writer, much more worthy of his change than him eh? Go semprini yourself and mods ban me if you want.

This place seems to go through phases where people forget how to be civil and get banned. Some people like to perpetually ride the line and always seem to have a chip on their shoulder. Everyone else is swell though.

Everyone else is swell though. I would just add that the poster who went off on you has been here for a long time with several usernames and is generally very civil... except when he's drunk. That doesn't give him the right to be so rude, but that's the context. That doesn't normally happen here. Looks like he hasn't logged in since he posted on New Year's, so I expect we'll see a retraction and apology shortly when he comes back.

I don't know why anyone would get into an uproar about this thread in the first place. It's a crap shoot. You don't stand to lose anything by participating. I've posted several reviews and I participate on the forum just about every day, but I haven't been contacted yet. If I am not asked to review something, then so what? If someone who never posts is asked to review a sword, then so what? I don't think this is a ploy to give away free swords to undeserving parties. Everyone should take a chill pill.

I wasn't monitoring this thread as closely as I clearly should have been. I kinda figured everyone would put their best foot forward, considering the purpose of the thread.

What's even more funny is the fact that many people thought this was simply a "get a free sword" thread and thought they would get a sword simply because they asked, lol. Come on guys, those getting upset over all the "new members" basically joining and posting in hopes of a "free sword" aren't giving Paul enough credit. You really think he's not screening the posts and checking the validity of those posters? Do you really think he's just going to pass around a bunch of "free swords" and hope the integrity of the poster is sound enough to post a legitimate review!?
Seriously guys those getting hot over this thread are a little too sensitive. Or they're simply pessimistic enough to think they're chances are squashed because of the amount of posts this thread has gotten, lol.
If Paul finds a volunteer that not only qualifies but also meets his criteria of trust he'll send out those swords accordingly. I'm sure Paul wouldn't want to have to go back to the manufacturers who sent him out the review swords with shrugged shoulders saying, "sorry they took the swords but didn't review them..." LOL!!🤷🏼♂️

I'll figure it out I think... ;-)
In the meantime, I have updated on the first page who has been selected for what so far and where the reviews are up to. One more person, this time from page 3, has been selected - so stay tuned.
