Do I dare bring this up? Personally I have strong views, but I can see how this kind of debate could be banned because of people having almost religious like views on this matter...thus making it a nearly religious debate....thus making it banned in the forum. What do you guys say? Shall we kindly and respectively present our own ideas to one another as everyone with equal respect and kindness listens? In other words, shall we argue about this? ;D -Quinn

...This again?
Which one is better, a built 240sx or a built 4x4 International?
It's kinda a pointless debate...and religious or not, this is a debate that should be banned anyways.

Completely different and separate cultures and philosophies to include weapons and fighting styles.

I think that so far......................................that's a no Quinn. I can understand your interest in seeing the group debate this, especially considering how respectful and intelligent some recent debates have been conducted here. I guess we will have to wait and see what develops. Will someone take up the mantle and answer the call.......or not. lol

I don't see a point for a debate about this really... Some of us like Weastern swords... some of us like eastern swords... some of us (like myself) like a collect both and value both for different reasons. What would be the use of a Western vs Eastern sword debate? Which one is better? Better at WHAT? While there still may be a few hold outs or some people who are still ignorant, I think the VAST majority of us here fully understand that neither style sword is better then the other... they are just different.

Exactly. NO ONE can present a valid argument on this topic, because it ALL comes down to personal preference, as Nihontoman said above. Opinions on aesthetics, handling, combat systems, historic interest... these all differ from person to person, making a comparison IMPOSSIBLE unless each and every person is alike, which would negate any possible gain from such a debate anyway. In other words- I like all swords, with VERY few exceptions, but I prefer European swords over katana. Is that because katana are inferior? Not in the least! In fact, one thing that I really do prefer about katana is the normal length of a short 26-30" blade and a long 9-13" tsuka. I would LOVE to have a European bastard sword of similar proportions... but even though the katana's length is more suited to myself and my fighting style, I still prefer European swords, regardless of the fact that they can have 36-40" blades and only 6-8" grips at times. Why do I feel like this? ...I honestly couldn't say. I doubt ANY of us truly can define why we like one area/type of swords more. Sure, we can say that 'we like katana more because we prefer the appeal of the Samurai to that of the medieval knight', but that begs the question 'why?'. Again, I doubt anyone can come up with an answer to this type of question that precludes more similar queries. Overall, a sword is a sword is a sword is a knife is a gun is a car is a WWII memorabilia is a baseball card collection is a pair of boots is a diamond ring is a.... I could go on for DAYS, and you know that that is true. There are MILLIONS of things that people collect, that they throw their life into understanding more about, but we have chosen swords, among so many other things. Of course, many of us have other interests as well, but still! Why should we divide ourselves so carelessly? It's not 'them' and 'us', nor 'us' and 'them'... It's just 'us'. Period. Sword lovers still have varying preferences, but so what? I've never understood why people on both sides of this non-existent, magical, illusionary line have chosen to argue so fiercely on the topic... when it's just SO not worth arguing about. It's not even worth having a debate with a friend over, because it cannot go anywhere whatsoever! The only thing to gain is knowledge of what your friends and peers prefer, which IS useful knowledge, in my book, but I'm doubtful that such an end would warrant childish screeching matches as has happened before when this was brought up (not necessarily on this forum, luckily). So, that's my $0.02... Hope it helps. -Slayer EDITED TO USE THE SPELL CHECK- I POSTED THIS ORIGINALLY IN THE QUICK POST BOX, LOL

I'm assuming that you are talking the Knight vs Samurai type of thing, right?
If one samurai and one knight decided to go at it, there are several factors involved. First, knights weren't ALWAYS wearing that big, huge, suit of armor. However, for this fight, lets assume they are. The same applies to the samurai. Alot of armor with alot of weight. Lets assume he is wearing his also. This is a sword battle so no bows/spears/other weapons. Knight is armed with his sword and let's say it's around 34". Samurai is armed with a typical katana with bo-hi and is around 27".
Now that the set-up is out of the way, let's have them go at it shall we?
The samurai would most likely get off a super-quick draw cut, however, most likely ineffective as there really is no good place to get a katana on a midevil suit of armor. The knight would be trying to direct his cuts as much as possible, however, dealing with the limited mobility of his armor and the samurai who has slightly lighter armor and better visibility. A katana isn't really that good of an armor cutter, so after a few hits, it would be bent, broke, or otherwise unusable. From here, the samurai can pretty much only count on one good strike from a tanto. If he is lucky enough to get close and hit the knight in a good spot, he may have a chance. However, the night is still swing away with his sword and will most likely end up baseball-batting the samurai until he is immobile and will be bludgeoned until he dies.
The sad true ending. Samurai are quick, more agile, and seemingly more scary than a knight, but their weapons are just not meant to punch through full-body steel armor.
Knights weaponry are more-or-less meant to dent armor and cause head trauma until death.
Some will argue that this is innacurate, however I had oral surgery a couple of days ago and Vicoden is kicking my butt. So argue away dudes!

mikeeman: i don't quite agree as it depends before all to the skills of both fighters but anyway this debate is quite a dead end because as said above everyone have its tastes...
i like both equally so if i had to choose one side i would say that it depend on the conditions of fighting (ennemy arsenal , armors etc)

As I said, I'm on lots of medicinezz. And I was assuming moderate skills on both ends.

Ric-surely you jest! You of all people know that katanas are the only blade worth carrying or useing and all others should be routed out and melted down and turned into Buick bumpers. ;D ;)Of course I am joking,I love my kats-love my gladii-those are all I own so I cant speak about other weapons that I have not handled.I find this whole discussion on "what if"-so and so met or what if this and that happened.IT DIDN'T-so get on with what you like/enjoy and not worry about hypothetical crap!!This is one of those things that is piontless and just causes hard feelings anger, high blood pressure and assorted nonsense! There is no answer to this kinda thing-none that will even satisfy even 5% of the forum-just plain piontless-now I'm going the Cafe and make a big bag of popcorn-butter or no butter.Any takers!
