I honestly cannot remember a time when I wasn't in love with the sword. My earliest games were "sword fighting" with my older brother with everything from random sticks to WWII vintage bayonets. This was the early '60s, by the by, so long before the rise of the boffer sword. My mother swears that I was born with a sword in my hand...which would go a long way to explaining why we never got along well; it must have been a fairly uncomfortable experience!
Seriously, though, I can remember as a very young child watching Errol Flynn, Stewart Granger and Robert Taylor flinging their blades about and quite literally jumping up and down with delight and excitement. As soon as I was old enough I started taking fencing lessons and never turned down the opportunity to beat on and be beaten upon with "practice swords" by any other kid who was willing. At first my love was the saber. I mean, look at what Granger and Mason did with them in Prisoner of Zenda! Ultimate Coolness! Then I graduated to the European single hand sword and, in my teens, was exposed to my all time favourite, the long sword! Blast it but I do so love the murderous beautiful things!
I wasn't as "in" to Katanas. Quite honestly the whole "superior weapon from the mysterious east" mystique put me off. Eventually I engendered an interest in Japanese history and found myself becoming more and more interested in their historic weaponry. I even own an entry level katana now. But I still don't like the hype.
In conclusion I have to say that I enjoy the aesthetics and handling of the European weaponry more than the undoubtedly lovely and well made katana. Does this make the Euro's "better"? Not really. Just a preference.

There are some very good responses in this thread, however whenever there is a discussion along these lines comparing apples to oranges, Ford to Chevy, Boxing to Karate, Euro to Japanese, too often folks seem to forget that it is the individual practitioner that ultimately makes the difference. When I began to study Oriental Martial Arts many many moons ago, there were always people that professed that one style was better than another, yet for every practitioner that was superior in one style there is always somewhere a practitioner in another style that could best them.
So which is better…which weapon/style is superior? Neither – Both – All of them. I’ve studied Kendo and Broadsword; personally in my humble opinion…they are both pretty badazz weapons in the hands of the right Swordsman/Warrior. So who would win in a one on one battle? I’m sure that for every Samurai that can best a Medieval Knight…there’s a Medieval Knight that can best a Samurai.
Pick the one that best fits and interests you.

I respect the Kat, but I've always been drawn to the European knightly sword. I don't know what it is, but for some reason, whenever I hold a good Epee De Guerre in my hands, it just feels RIGHT. Pretty much all my sword purchases are influenced by gut feelings, I buy swords that have a certain je ne sais quoi to them, something I can't really define. And most of those are euros. Although to be fair, my first sword purchase (real sword, that is) was a bargain-basement $50 masahiro kat, that I ran across at the mall, and let me tell you, I felt like a pimp, holding an actual sword, that can, like, actually cut people up, and stuff! Neato!

Ladies.. look at my sword .. now look at your man .. now back to my sword .. have you ever seen such a powerfull and hard symbol of perfection .. its THRUSTING towards you with care YET passion .. NOW the sword is a bouquet of those expensive flowers you love .. ONLY now to become a shield to protect you ... BUT ITS NOW a platter with strawberries from that chef you worships private garden ..... AND cavier ... I'm riding a horse.

hello ladies, how are you? Fantastic. Does your man look like me? no! can he smell like me? Yes! Do you want your man to smell like an old spice man? It depends, do you like the smell of adventure? Do you want your man to smell like he can bake you a cake in the dream kitchen he made for you with his own hands? Of course you do.
Brilliant ;D

Have to admit I have always been put off by those stories claiming the katana to be that mystical wonder weapon with out equal... I DO like test cutting with katana and I think they are very well designed to deliver a devastating cut. I find the evolution of Euros a little more interesting though and even tough you guys see me cutting most of the time with a Kat, I don't think either takes a back seat to the other. The right sword for the situation.

Most here prob haven't handled a real katana to know wtf they're talking about.
Ric is right, Euros are better - because Euro quality in reproductions are way easier to find right now. Japanese? Good luck.

Despite the base of my knowledge being in Japanese swords, primarily do to an earlier fascination with overall Japanese culture (it's far more interesting than America, and less confusing than "Europe") my favorite weapons tend to hail from somewhere between the two. Like this one: www.oriental-arms.com/photos.php?id=1477Or this one, which I very seriously considered buying for $800-something at one point: www.oriental-arms.com/photos.php?id=4023I also find it fairly amusing what people are actually comparing. Too many of us will look at a Cheness or even a Dynasty Forge and think "best katana EVAR" and be horribly, terribly wrong. Sure, I've got production swords, too...but I don't think they're the best representation of what they intend to represent. Euros...eh, much the same...but they're getting better faster. Now would somebody just make a decent frickin' jambiya or yataghan?

Ladies, look at your katana, now look at my euro. Does your katana look like my euro? Of course not! But it can smell like it. Here smear this mineral oil on it. Ah, doesn't that smell better than that choji oil? Of course it does! Now close your eyes and feel my gladius. Doesn't that feel thick and firm? Of course it does! Does your katana feel like that? I didn't think so!

Just for reference:
AAAAAND..... Bruce Campbell.
Nuff said.
And I prefer Euros, mostly just on an aesthetic level. I do think many Japanese swords are gorgeous though.

I know a man who can ride an ATV and swing a sword. Beats a horse any day, or so I hear. Don't know if Mike wears Old Spice, though. Ah, commercials.

WOW I know it's "un-priestly" of me, but WHAT A semprini! He was probably just late for the local KKK meeting and had to swing by home for his white sheet, any way. Blows my mind that there are still people that ignorant in the world. By the way, I am a BIG TIME Blues fan, m'self. For me, it's listening to the ladies sing it: Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Etta James, and the all time Empress of the Blues, "Lady Day". ~wp it may be unpriestly but it is very warriorly . . . ummm combative? ummm yeah you are still being true to half of you at the least. you go Thanks, Tom. To quote a bumper-sticker,"Without justice, there can be no peace." ~wp
