...This again? Which one is better, a built 240sx or a built 4x4 International? It's kinda a pointless debate...and religious or not, this is a debate that should be banned anyways. please be more specific, big banned? polka banned? blues band? jazz band? rock & roll band?

I, personally, prefer Euro swords because that is what peeks my imagination and interest. Every sword oriented story and movie and fairy tale I have ever loved uses Euro style swords. For me it's as simple as that. When I thing of high adventure or heated battle involving a sword, it always ends up looking like a Euro sword. Heck, if I play a fantasy video game involving swords, I won't even touch the other swords. If the fantasy RPG doesn't have cool looking Euro style swords then I won't even play it. Simply put, the European sword, and not the Eastern sword, sparks my imagination on a fantastical and historic level, not because it's better but because I have been soaking up images of the hero with the euro my whole life.
This, in my humble opinion, seems like it would be a silly debate in the first place because sword effectiveness is effected by personal/opponent skill and technique and personal/opponent armor.
The debate would almost be like an apple saying to an orange "I'm more apply than you (looking smug). And vise versa.
In my opinion they are nearly incomparable.

I think I know how to solve this... the both fail! The Master Sword (Legend of Zelda) wins, hands down. Sure it looks like a euro medieval, but it's from the land of Hyrule... so unless someone can find Hyrule on the map, I'm going to pretend it's in America. . . yeah...

mikeeman321 and fallschirmjager both make great points My personal experience with the swords I own, so far the Katanas have been the better bottle cutters I also think based on the destructive tests I have watched, that Cheness Katanas would hold up well against armor if they can chop into 55 gallon drums several times with little damage A L6 Katana made by Howard Clark would probably be able to at least damage the armor, if not cut it, without failing. Of course, so would a Euro blade made the same way. I like Katanas since they are light, the long handles make them easy to control, and I can move them fast I also like Euros with long handles for the same reason, so I bought the Hanwei Bastard Sword and the Tinker GSOW. I will probably not buy any very long bladed one-hand Euros, and never any cavalry sabers, since I would find them difficult to wield one-handed. I like the idea of having a Viking blade some day, but I need to hold one before I buy it for the same reason

Holy crap guys! I leave this up for less than a day and I got 3 pages here.....I say we'd best let this one go. Slayer, I very much agree. It comes down to opinion and build. Myself, being from German and Danish descent, I prefer a heavy chunk of steel to swing and bash with (axe, hammer, large sword). I'll leave this argument out for.....the entirety of my life ;D And I'll try not to judge you katana lovers -Quinn

Did he just say that England has gone to the dogs?lol Yep. They used dog poo as the secret ingredient, while pounding out blades on an anvil, to make medieval steel so indestructible. That's the origin of the term "dog pound." ;D

The debate is pointless because you have two different cultures of combat That become what they were because of different needs in combat. It is basically two different interpretations of the same goal. You might as well try to argue on if Japanese food is better than Chinese food. Again different needs and different circumstances. And experience has allot of play in choices.
I have always been interested in old folk and blues music. Woody Guthrie, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan, The Clancy brothers ex. I am even talking guitar lessons to learn some simple tunes. I had one guy tell me he had no interest in "primitive" music and wouldn't teach me the cords.... he went on to critique my interest in the music. I simply said it was a music that said what I wanted to say in a way I couldn't say it. Needless to say you can't compare folk and blues of 50-60 years ago to the American idol fad of today. Need of music is different because of circumstances....

I think this thread could be salvaged by people saying, like I did, why they like certain swords over others, at least I would find it interesting, for example, why Ricwilly likes Gladii so much, knowing what an awesome guy Ric is, and his great knowledge of swords, I might learn things I didn't know about Gladii, and maybe I would find out I was missing out on a kind of sword I would not otherwise think about had I not read why Ric liked them as much as he does It would help folks new to the forum too to read the discussions, and as long as it people giving their personal reasons for why they felt as they did, the thread wouldn't devolve into "Katanas R Best, they Own All Other Swordz U N00bs" junk and a Thread Locked.
