Thanks Luna,
Otherwise me and I'm sure others that skip commercials would still be thinking "did they pass round the crack pipe when I was in the bathroom?" about all the old spice comments.
Now they are funny as heck!
Oh yeah the post, well a year ago I thought 19th century military swords were the best, you know evolution of bladed weapons and then this forum corrupted me into medieval euro bliss (where I am now) but also to try a few katana and I will always use them too.
Like most people here I would love to try out and own examples of everything swordly as well as the different styles of fighting, but I think I would love most to have a fusion like euro blade with a military basket hilt (like the one john erickson did, anyone else still thinking about all those designs from the darksword competition) or the VA (east meets west) warder as well.
Cheers, Rob

Why limit yourself to one culture of sword? I would have them both!

I like the Warder as well Might get the Windlass Heron Mark some day, though I heard some say there was some quality issues, but maybe by the time I get money again, they will have the bugs worked out

Ladies, look at your katana, now look at my euro. Does your katana look like my euro? Of course not! But it can smell like it. Here smear this mineral oil on it. Ah, doesn't that smell better than that choji oil? Of course it does! Now close your eyes and feel my gladius. Doesn't that feel thick and firm? Of course it does! Does your katana feel like that? I didn't think so! LMAO-harharhar-omg-I have tears running down my face!!!karma to you!!

@sirtre: Well, but if you can take that serious is questionable. Swords and medieval times aren't their specific repertoire. And mostly you can't trust german "scientific" TV shows nowadays. And you just can't compare two so different swords. It doesn't make sense. You couldn't even compare a euro from the late medieval with a spatha. Why? Because they're way different and the purpose was another one. And: It always depends on the quality. I just think there are good katanas and there are good euros. There are also bad euros and bad katanas. I think that's the most realistic way to see it.

Well, you could never know who's taking it serious that's why I wrote that. (That was no offense against you) But at all I always come down to the same point: It always depends on WHAT sword you use. For exampe I could take a standard Hanwei Katana and let it test against an Albion, Tinker or Lundemo. The result would be very clear. But on ther otherhand if I take a real Shinken and test it against standard Windlass, it would also loose. I guess it's clear what I mean.

I started out liking the Katana, I thought it has to be the best hands down....... I also didn't know anything about swords.
Now I think [_____] swords are the best, big ones, little ones, fat ones, skiny ones, straight ones, curved ones................

So I have to ask,
Why is it just European vs Japanese? What about Chinese, Korean, Middle Eastern, hell don't forget the amazingness of the Aztec obsidian swords. There are a lot of other swords besides the Euro and Japanese. Many of these have some things that could be refered to as better by someone who wanted to debate. Like the Aztec obsidian sword is definately the sharpest in the world. You can't get any sharper than obsidian, and then you also have to think that it very well may leave shards of this super sharp stone in the wound. Sounds pretty burly to me.
My opinion though, is every culture has produced a great blade style. If it is good for you depends on your personal style and purpose for a sword. You can't really compare most swords form other cultures together. They all have different merits and weaknesses.
So in my opinion neither Euro or Japanese, I will vote for Aztec since you failed to mention the sharpest sword ever made.

Many of the exclusive plastic surgeons use obsidian scalpels because the wound edges are SO clean, there is practically NO scarring. This practice is super expensive because obsidian can't exactly be thrown in the old autoclave, so each scalpel is a one use item, only. Still, it's pretty cool to think that with all of our fancy technology, old Mom Nature still produces the sharpest edge. blessings, ~wp

"So hey, European swords or Japanese?"
"Umm, Japanese?" YOU FAILLLLLLLLL!
Oh god, why is this still being posted? For a thread on a sword forum, these have to be the most uncivilized threads that are most often posted. I personally love Japanese swords, but you always have that guy that is like "Nope, this is without a doubt better".
I wish I could say I am shocked, but not really. We should sticky one of these so people stop posting them, at that point it'd just be redundant.
And what I love the most, people know this will cause drama. *Sigh*
EDIT: I also notice people flat out saying "European swords are better" despite the intended purposes of the swords in question. Also the "Kats all look alike" is funny to me, because that is what detered me from European swords. And if Quality control is such a huge factor, don't get Chinese-made swords, invest in something high quality. Just the stupidity of the posts...
Sorry if I offend any particular person, but this is the kind of thing that makes me lose respect for those I thought were doing the forum well, sweeping generalizations just piss me off.

After a couple strikes on even unarmoured targets its going to shater and then you have no weapon or... if you had a wood core, you now have a club. Against armour I'd bet the Obsidian is useless. Any sword that frail can't really be considered a good weapon IMO.

Against bare skin it could be used to dangerous effect.

Your not wrong as far as I know... but as I said, even against unarmoured opponents if you whack an Obsidian sword into someone its gonna snap, its super brittle. I understand they sometimes put shards of Obsidian into large wood clubs to make swords... and with those at least after a few whacks and the Obsidian breaks, you still have a club. But you don't have a sword anymore. To me, any weapon that, due to its very nature will be broken after a few uses can not really be considered a good weapon.
