Singer machine oil is odorless at least to me. But former boxer and nose broken 6 times, so I don't smell so well.

I would imagine an alcohol cleaning is done after to remove the water. Don’t confuse rust with pitting. Pitting is the result of rust and it’s entirely possible to remove rust while the pitting remains. True water causes rust. Alcohol will dry water and I used that method many times in the lab to speed up drying glassware. And to really get it clean and dry rinse with ether afterwards. Both of which is more expensive and time consuming than necessary in your case. Dry the water with a good grade of paper towel. This absorbs better than say a cotton cloth. Then apply a water displacing oil. WD-40 is very good for this. In fact the WD stands for water displacing. pgandy, are you a fellow scientist? I am a 20 year molecular biologist (sort of well known) so I caught your lab reference.

For non antiques or non-finished (blued etc). One trick that can work is wet (with water) aluminum foil. Then clean with mineral spirits or alcohol and a good oil wipe down. Water and aluminum foil has a "sucking out rust" effect. How do you do that? The water wont rust the blade? I would imagine an alcohol cleaning is done after to remove the water.

23.86" or 60.6cm, going by the traditional 2 shaku cut-off. Strictly, that's not really a cut-off between katana and wakizashi, but between daito and shoto (or odachi and kodachi). But since wakizashi are shoto and katana are daito, it's the cut-off between them. I am finding I have a preference for the larger blade sizes. (keep jokes to yourselves)

I am compiling a list of swords that I have interest in, from modern made blades to customs to old Nihonto, and the blade length variation is very interesting.
24 - 30 inches. Quite a range!
At what point is a katana really a wakizashi?

Happy hunting. I can't find a single one in stock...no where on the internet. In all honesty this production katana is the closest I've seen to a nihonto anywhere. I've seen several up close in museums and minus looking antiquish this one comes very close. From the pics I agree. That is beautiful. I own Nihonto and that is the bar by which I measure the aesthetics of modern reproductions. (Most fail miserably). This one passes the test as "darn that is close to what they actually look like" Was thinking same thing. Beauty of a sword.

I've got a similar sword, it's mumei but I think it's probably a Kashu/Kaga smith, mid 17th century. The suguha hamon is similar to yours in regards to it being hazy and not well defined. I've been meaning to work on it to bring out the contrast but haven't gotten around to it yet. Too many other projects on the go at the moment! Love it!!!!

I like them so much I got two on the one blade. I can go either way. But I do favor intriguing geometry. And the way the spine goes from full to minimum and back to full again is really neat. I think I see more Unokubi Zukuri in my future. Weighs the same as a wider blade but feels lively. If it were an airplane I'd call it flickable. That looks really wild, like it!

Lights off in room ( I use my den) with a flashlight; old nihonto have amazing grain of steel and the hamon is so very wonderful. Trying to figure out how to take pics.

I boxed for years and my home was Arthur Ramalho's Lowell West End Gym. Always loved swords and martial arts. You have no access to any kind of outlet? A heavy bag, some quiet space to practice with swords? Get excited, this may work: The dude in yellow was on fire for the majority of that round till he got tired. But talk about some speedy ducks and dodges. Thomas "The Hit Man" Hearns in yellow, the famous Kronk gym. He had to fight Brockton's own Marvelous Marvin Hagler though, and this fight ended in the 3rd round.
