Do a search for "Hataya kotetsu"... they're dedicated mat cutters that are wider than regular katanas, and are made in Thailand. An online friend who's more knowledgable in these blades once told me "the Bugei Dragonfly was modeled after a Gen 1 Hataya Kotetsu owned by David Neely while the Hanwei Tori was modeled after the Dragonfly." I don't know what the actual Japanese blades are called though.

Never owned a Randal, but did have a couple of Blackjack Model 1-7 exactly like the one you posted (sold one though my store, kept the other for myself). It's a beautiful and functional blade, which should give you years of service. As for owning a Randal just as a collector's piece, why not? It is your $.

Really sorry for your loss Wes... words can't come close to what you and her family must be going through.

Have you considered joining the fencing team at your college? I did, and loved training in epee and foil while I was at UMass Amherst.

most retailers (my website included) have automatic shipping rules for all items... unless you speak directly to the seller/retailer beforehand, you'll get the built in shipping rate.

That's a pretty decent budget, about $85 US. If that's before shipping, you get lots of options. Numerous other options are bound to flow in, so take your time and look around. I concur - take your time and get the best one you can get. You might also want to PM some of the makers on SBG. I'm sure you can get a decent custom for a little more than your current budget if you're willing to save up a little more/wait.

I'd stay away from MTech, their knives aren't really that good. Are there any other makers you'd consider beyond the 2 you mentioned?

If you're talking about The Printed Armoury's fittings being sold from my online store (LG Martial Arts), the original pieces were 3D printed, molds were then made out of them, and then the final fittings were then made out of Stainless Steel. In the near future, some (if not all) of the fittings will come in mild steel. I'm sure LemuelTheLemur can elaborate further. Cheers!

An alternative (if you're not into tradition that much) is silicone spray (AMSOIL or equivalent). You can soak (spray) a soft cotton rag with the spray and when not using it, keep it stored in a zip lock bag like Chris mentioned in a previous post. Silicone dries clear, repels water, and won't attract dust.

New acquisitions: Remington 700 bolt action AAC-SD in .308, with a Magpul Rem 700 Hunter stock, Magpul magazine well w/detachable AICS pattern mag, a Primary Arms 4-14X44mm scope with ACSS HUD DMR. Knife is a new Fat Bastard in Armorer's Black Cerakote from Born in Fire Knives/Thomas Rice. Forgive the low pic quality, but it's kind of hard to take pics when everything's black.

Be careful between Lutel and Lutel-Handicraft. The business split up several years ago, and one of the former partners kept the original name (Lutel has a pretty bad reputation on their items, all of them being sub-par), while Lutel-Handicraft ( www.lutel-handicraft.com ) is the complete opposite, with decent custom swords, etc. *Edit: here's a link to a post on SBG from a few years back about both companies sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/42325/
