So I am a college student as the title suggests. I cannot complain about having that opportunity. I can't even really complain about classes or my life on campus in general. As many people say, enjoy it while it lasts and all that. What I can complain about, however, is not being able to have my swords with me.
I don't have the large collections many on here have. I only have two in fact. But as far as I can tell having sharpened swords in a dorm is a bit of a no no.
Now I am sure I could get away with it. People have rule breaking items all the time though generally of a more mundane nature such as an open heat source. But I know it would make my family, who I still rely upon until I finish my education and get a good job, less than happy for me even to chance it. Thus, I respect their wishes on the matter.
Still, It drives me nuts when I get the desire to handle one of them and cannot. I might need to look into a feder or other blunted training blade just so I can have a sword to handle in such cases. I intend to try and get into HEMA at some point anyway once I have the time and money for it so it would be a long term investment as well.
Just a random rambling as I sit here relaxing after a midterm. It is probably caused by only having the one weekend with my new Ronin Euro #7 before having to return to campus haha.

Oh? My college allowed swords, axes, etc. With the same stipulations as most other knives: if the blade was over 3", it could not be carried concealed. Since it was a state college, the state's laws prevailed. If it's that important to you, you might want to check with your housing and residence life office.

One of my classmates in college now just keeps his wood sword in the car.

I can double check. I know the rules regarding concealed carrying knives as I do have an edc knife. As for the sword I could try asking about it but I believe I read a rule specifically banning longer blades.

What's the worst that happens, you get wrapped up in a straightjacket and hauled off to the funny farm? Bear in mind, I'm going off of Michigan's laws from a decade ago (yikes!), which have undoubtedly changed since then and are probably different than your state.

I spent my University time living in a dorm. I can give you 100 good reasons why you really, really don't want a live sword in a dorm. It's like the guy who broke two arms and his pelvis being thrown out of the 4th story window...in a baby carridge race, or the frat beer bust going on in your room while you're gone for the weekend and they have a stinking drunk contest knocking beer cans off each others heads when your not there.
Do I need to go on.
Stick to latex until you move off campus.

Neither my roommate or myself drink in our room, we have very well established rules for having people over, etc etc. I agree there are still reasons not to have a live sword (small enclosed space, potential slipping on tile floor, etc etc) but I don't think the alcohol and stupidity fueled ones are the ones I need to be worried about haha.

Most schools won'y stop you from having a wooden sword or something like that. And if they do, get a piece of wood and shape it vaguely into a sword, and they'll be none the wiser... But, if you are referring to the simple pleasure of having the swords, not the use part, then yeah, I know what you mean. Whenever I get sent out with the army, I miss my swords... I used the rods of my rifle cleaning kit to practice with. Something that might work for you is one of those extendable tai chi swords. While nowhere near the feeling of a real jian (or really any sword), you get the look of one and can use it somewhat, then just collapse it and put it in a drawer. www.amazon.com/Ace-Martial-Arts-Supply-Extendable/dp/B001F4MRWY/ref=pd_bxgy_200_img_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=1GQ0668N3CG905QPBJA9This is a plastic one, but theres a few metal ones. It's an option, if nothing else.

Have you considered joining the fencing team at your college? I did, and loved training in epee and foil while I was at UMass Amherst.
