Atlanta has two great events in the pipe:
The Georgia Renaissance Faire (April 18th - June 7th, 2009).
AND
Dragon*Con 2009 (September 4th - 7th, 2009).
I always attend these, and so should you if you can. What better way to meet fellow forumites, check out gear, drink, eat, and make merry with one another! This thread can serve as our connection up to and through these great events as well as linking to discount tickets, information, etc!
So, are you going?

The wife and I go to both every year we live in Smyrna only about 10 min from dragon con and half an hour from the renfest. The trouble with the renfest is how hot it gets.Makes it hard to wear the full garb, especially the armour.cant miss me in this. Heres the boots i bought last season from "Son of Sandaler" he makes a comfy great looking boot.

What's their weapon policy? I live in MD and they do not allow them however I have noticed a few slip by- they were epoxied into their scabbards; I have not decided if any blade of mine, wallhanger or otherwise, should have to submit to such indignant circumstances but hey, when you're fully garbed w/out a sword, its sorta like a cop going out on the beat w/out his department issue. I know NJ and PA allow it so the wife and I will be attending those this year, but I'm always on the lookout for new and interesting venues.
Buliwyf, that is some impressive armor you have there...you'd stick out on a satellite photo, my friend.

Ebon This is from the renfest page QUOTE"If your costume includes a sword or dagger they must be properly sheathed and peace-tied. Present yourself to the Security Person at our Front Gate. No broadaxes or spears are allowed". website www.garenfest.com/I'm not sure about dragon con we have worn garb with swords and have never been asked about anything having to be peace tied or not welcome. As a matter of fact last year I was talking to Grant from ghost hunters and he asked to see my wifes Jody Samson sword, seems he collects and is a big fan of swords. they also have booths that sell swords and alot of slo's so I cant imagine them being able to sell them but not being able to carry them,Still i'm not positive of their policy but that would be my guess.

You can bring weapons to Dragon*Con. However, they are very inconsistant about it.
In some cases, you have to be peace tied by a police officer and instructed that you will be arrested if you are caught the the peace tie missing or with the weapon out of the scabbard.
You walk around the corner and there are 3 people with sharps fully out of their scabbards taking pictures that never got peace tied to begin with and never got harassed by the police.
Go up two floors and there is a guy who just bought a Gil Hibben dagger from one of the vendors being pepper-sprayed because he does not have a brown paper wrapper on it.
Get my drift? Inconsistant. It's one of those rather silly things. I've always carried a weapon zip-tied solidly and never had a problem. Go figure!

Yup... I can't wait... I tried to bring a small hand axe into the Faire once... I have a dubble ring belt frog for it, and I had it peace tied with like 5 knots... there was no WAY it was getting out... and they made me trun around an leave it in the car. I peace tie my blades with leather string... because: 1. It looks authentic... as if someone had to do this, they might use that... not a plastic zip-tie. 2. They way some of the gate people put on the zip ties can mess up your grip... the plastic cab be sharp and they put it on tight, it can dig into your leather. Sometimes they zip-tie me anyway... even after I went threw the hassel of peace tieing my weapons myself. Buliwyf: I think you would MELT in that armour... pass out of heat stroke or at least lose 10 lbs of water weight... my god.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program; I used to go to renaissance festivals all the time, and loved them ;D. I wish I could make these, but alas 5 kids and work. It would have to be closer to home kwim

You can do armor, you just have to look at it as the military did us in full IBA/weapon/basic load (which is 60-80lbs):
1. When you wake up, hydrate well with a quart or two of Gatorade or water.
2. If you are thirsty or not, drink a quart of water every hour. Eat salty snacks every now and then to keep your electrolyte level up so you don't get a headache.
3. Watch your urine flow for color. If its clear, you are good. If it is pale yellow, you need to drive a little more. If it is dark yellow, you need to drink alot more and get out of your armor for a little bit.
4. Stay out of the direct sunlight unless you need to be in it. Move between spots of shade.
5. Wet a cloth and put it around your neck and keep your hair damp. Wash your face frequently to keep salts out of your eyes.
If you can survive in the Middle East in 130 degree heat wearing 80 lbs of crap - surviving at the Renn Faire in 80-90 degree heat should be fairly simple. Keep extra stuff in your car to change into if you should find you are a girly man and cannot wear the armor all day. Remember that people were doing this a thousand years ago without abundance of fresh water and had the added stress of battle; they seemed to do pretty well at it. ;D

What we *can* do looks great and gets alot of positive attention from the ladies! A small price to pay for the exceptionally deviant memories I cherish for years after each Faire/Con season! I'd post some photos here to inspire you, but I'd get banned...

I'd post some photos here to inspire you, but I'd get banned... Heh... I want no attention from the ladies... cuz my wife is normaly with me when I go to the RenFaire these days. I went to a RenFaire back in NorCal many years ago with my then girlfriend. At the time I had a Swashbuckling style outfit and a personality to match... I flirted a lot with the ladies... and they with me. My girlfriend was LESS then pleased... and I suffered greatly and learned a valuable lesson. Since then I've gone with less... social customs and persona. Like mysterious wizard types or Woodland/Ranger swordsman, are gnarly looking barbarians... all of which have one thing in commong... ...they don't flirt much.

I have a wife that keeps the harlots away in most case. However, my wife refuses to do more than a couple faires a year and never does Dragon*Con, so I am left unguarded and under the evil influence of my friends. Don't get me wrong, my moral state is fairly solid, but I still end up with a ton of photos/videos that could denote otherwise.
The worst I ever had it was in the Roman armor. For some reason, that stuff seemed to be a chick magnet, even though I wore it to be out of period as a joke poked at all of the 18th and 19th century pirates walking around. People went way out of their way to initiate a conversation with me so much, it was laughable. Here is a sample conversation:
Pirate Girl: "Hey Maximus, you're in the wrong period!"
Odingaard: "Really now. Didja know that King Arthur was probably a Roman?"
Pirate Girl: "Really?"
Odingaard: "Yup. And did you know that the pirate you are portraying is from the late 1700s or early 1800s? Furthermore, did you know your look is probably based on a character from bad movie trilogy based on a children's amusement park ride at Disneyworld?"
Pirate Girl: "I never thought about."
Odingaard: "Did you ever stop to think that if I were dressed as Ben Franklin or George Washingon, I'd be dressed more authentically and from the same historical period you wrongfully think you are representing?"
Pirate Girl: "I never thought of that either..hmm. Just shut up and take me with you. The Roman stuff is turning me on and I just wanted to start a conversation with you anyway."
Odingaard: *diabolical laugh while horns sprout forth and eyes turn glowing red*
Armor might be too much for some. There needs to be a Surgeon General's warning on it.

At these things its all about the look, but how do I look as a Templar w/no sword? Not very Templar-like I can tell you.

I've often wondered if any sword fights have ever broken out at any RenFaires? I have never seen one in 15+ years of attending, nor even heard of one... ...so if incidents don't happen, why do the weapons restrictions keep getting more and more strict? If not in response to an issue, whats the reason?
