It would appear that Windlass and Hanwei are the leaders here? Instead of looking at it from the aspect of a best buy, the poll was designed as more of a demographic study. Ignore the poll percentages and look at the percentage of buys of a certain source by the number of voters (divide the smaller number by the bigger number and multiply by 100). It is not about how many of a certain source one bought from, it only counts that source once per voter. A larger percentage of voters have bought from either Windlass of Hanwei (all CAS) The poll is not about quality or numbers of repeat buys but rather perception of an initial decision. Cheers GC It is also an abstract roll call. There have been about 15 new voters this past month. We certainly don't see the 139 voters actively posting in this section outside of this poll.

Also a reminder that this was posted in this subforum to reflect viking and medieval swords. Polls for other sections might be interesting but not my job.
Also a clarification if needed. As second hand/preowned sword was still produced somewhere, so if you bought a sword previously owned, vote for the producer/maker.

A US stimulus bump up. Someone at the cafe had wondered how they might spend cash on hand.

I'd be interested to hear what vendors people are avoiding and why as well as which ones they like. Seems like it varies so much sword to sword though. I haven't heard of many producer hitting the spot every time except for Albion. (I wouldn't know, I had to save up to get this KA Atrim XIV who's safe delivery I await with a candle in my window each night) I hear really good things about Albion. And both good and bad things about Hanwei. I've no experince with Darksword, Arms and Armor or Del Tin. Mostly heard bad things about Cold Steel except for a few gems that stand out for the price point and durability.

Back up for the holiday. We still show only 147 respondents, which is certainly a much greater number than those posting but still relative to overall traffic.
As mentioned, the poll can be amended by the individuals if the are adding to a category. The poll still remains open for years to come.
Cheers GC

It seems like something always gets in the way.

Quick summary, First up I brought the Windlass German Bastard Sword (later sold to help fund the Albion Liechtenauer), It wasn't the greatest of swords (production wise) but was pretty cool. I ended up drilling out the pommel to make room for a better inserted nut. I'd like another.
Next came along Hanwei's Single hand practical knightly sword, ok for what it was. Somewhat blade heavy. Later the blade took a nasty gouge and became a short sword (with the Hanwei practical Norman's guard).
Next the Hanwei practical Norman, ok for what it was, I liked it better than the Knightly sword. It looked more like a Norman sword with the Knightly's guard! Later sold to fund HEMA gear.
The Albion Liechtenauer, just awesome favorite sword ever. Now 11 years old (brought from Albion).
Wasn't mine though I did organise the sale and was delivered to me, the Hanwei practical Hand and a Half (first version). Not a bad sword, does what it's meant to do. Based on another sword with a big arsed hard to hold pommel!
As above, A Hanwei/Tinker Bastard Sword, a nice small sword. I liked it, was very quick. I ended up making a better nut replacing the soft easily stripped hex nut, I did this to another one of these Bastard swords.
As above, A Hanwei practical Hand and a Half (2nd version with smaller pommel and new blade?), was an ok sword, a little blade heavy.
One of mine, Arms & Armour Fechterspiel (unpolished model). At first I didn't like it, more asthectics (I really wanted an Albion Meyer! but costs). Is a great feder, fast and light, not as strong in the bind against a heavier sword. The grip was a tad fat but once it got smashed up I replaced it with a slimmer grip. I think it's 8 or 9 years old and still going!. One of mine, an Albion Sempach (early 2014), very nice, a couple of small flaws but nothing that stops it being a nice sword! (brought from KoA).
Landsknecht Emporium, Gottfried? Langes Messer (blunt), I got this before they really got popular and jumped in price. Is a rough and ready piece that looks cool.
Albion Earl, a coveted sword for almost 10 years then luck came about and I picked up an ox blooded grip with scabbard (DBK) (was the colour I would have gone with), in very tidy condtion, sharp and never cut with (2013 built).
Not mine but have handled;
Landsknecht Emporium early production Messer (rough with a wobbly nagel) but nice to play with!. Landsknecht Emporium early production fancy Messer with inlays and twisted nagel, nice to use and despite being early production is still a very nice piece. Landsknecht Emporium early feder (discontinued), is rough and ready, very fast and light. Hanwei/Tinker longsword (blunt), a nice light longsword, quick, gets knocked about somewhat. Ibeam (whoever makes them?), not my cup of tea, strong somewhat to flexi and very blade heavy almost feels as there was zero weight in the hilt. Valiant Armoury (I can't remember the model), Sharp, not too bad for a sword and scabbard combo, I little too wobbly for me!. Albion Ringeck, another very nice sword, feels good in hand, nice to swing about. Not as pretty as the Fiore though! Szymon Chlebowski Standard Federschwet, very cool looking, good weight nice to use, may pick one up oneday. Hanwei Practical Bastard, not a bad sword, not a great sword, not much flex.
Well there you have a long list, there have been others that I forget the names. Though to say, I vowed never to buy another Hanwei I spent to much time having to knock pommels back on and repairs, cost wise they are ok but I think there's better out there. Windlass well they can be hit and miss. Nice to look at. Arms & Armour are cool though somewhat bland! In saying that their custom works from what I've seen (in pics) is very nice. Albion, expensive. Me likey. Last up Landsknecht Emporium, started rough and ready still going strong. The stuff that's coming out of their workshop is very nice.

Mad Jim, it's always nice to hear others thoughts on swords, however long they may be. Thank you for your input.

I got my first Albion today. Feels a little strange. I never really thought I would own one. But my tally has been updated. I've got 8 checks in the list.

Mead making must be good business? :D I suppose it could be. But I give away probably 90% or more of what I make. So I guess I'm currently more of a pro bono mead maker. Although the recent stretch of working from home did save a few pennies on gas, lunches, etc. And that turned into an Albion. Go figure. :)

Up for the new readers here at SBG. Not quite two years has passed and 158 participants have voted.
Again, the poll can be entirely anonymous. This also does not count how many swords from a given source one might own, or have owned. It's ok if one wants to share their list or experience here but the poll simply reflects whether one has owned a medieval or viking sword of a given category (as listed).
Cheers GC

Yea I haven't bought much from any other manufacturers than Windlass for the last few years. I guess you can say they're my "go to guys" for medieval european swords. A lot of that has to do with what I feel they offer. That being a consistent product for the price point. Over the last six months I've probably added over 20 swords to my collection and 3/4 of those purchases have been Windlass. The rest were either non European models or purchased from various manufacturers not on the list such as Balaur Arms, Deepeeka and Kawashima (the supposed no name Chinese manufacturer of European swords sold on Kult of Athena).
In regards to vendors, Kult of Athena and Museum Replicas has been the two major vendors I've purchased from with the rest being purchased from the classifieds here and one purchase from Irongate Armory, in Finland.
