I know swords aren't the most practical weapons, but I'd like to carry a shorter bladed sword (under 26") for zombie SHTF scenario. They'd be really handy when trying to take out some zombies indoors without having to get too close (unlike if you only had a fixed blade knife) and without having to alert every zombie in a mile radius (unlike a firearm, unless you happen to own a suppressor). I'm taking one short sword with me to college. Would you all recommend me taking my cheness oniyuri or my hanwei practical ninjato? A ninjato is good because once it dulls you can still stab easily with it, and the kiriha-zukuri kissaki makes a nice durable stabbing point. On the other hand, Cheness blades are renowned for high durability and the extended tsuka on the oniyuri allows for many different ways of handling it. OP, you were talking about a good machete earlier, I would recommend either a $50 kabar kukri (sharp as hell, EXCELLENT chopper, yet extremely durable with a comfortable grip and secure sheath) or this: www.trueswords.com/thick-jungle- ... -5006.html (whenever it comes in stock). It's a brandless machete, but I've used it for 2 years now, and it's held up perfectly. It came almost paper-cutting sharp, and I touched it up with an AccuSharp (cue rotten tomato throwing), but it chops like nobody's business. It may seem a little heavy, but its heft deals serious damage when chopping wood and feels like it would split a zombies head open with ease. Only damage it's sustained is a slightly rolled tip, when I accidentally dropped it tip first into the concrete floor of my garage. I've also never cleaned it, but it has no rust, weird :?

the hanwei is probably the best bet,if only because it's more compact. Plus, you shouldn't be using the sword in a SHTF situation as anything but a weapon anyway, so dulling shouldn't be an issue.

some pennies in the pot;
Quick followup with .454 Casull with a super redhawk would be do-able. The gun is friggin huge, but everything about shooting is VERY well balanced even though I have only got to put 2 rounds through it. Hand would feel like you got hit very square with a sledgehammer, but thats why I think it would be feasible. The force is straight back, barrel comes up a little bit but is really good one the side to side. For me, my hold and everything else personal on the shots proved it to be very accurate. Did feel like I blocked a good punch with each pull though. That gun is easier to control than his XD .45 by far.
.22 great for small game, gotta eat, and to keep that practice level up. Ammo is expensive, 40 x .454, or 1000 x .22.
Swords are defiantly handy, saves a bullet and CAN have a very high stopping power. People flat out cannot shoot you when the gun and a good portion of their arm is on the floor. People can still shoot after taking a center mass shot. I think the all out best gameplan involves knowing yourself and choosing a load out proper to where you plan on going. A khukri is massively powerful and effective. It would however wear me out too fast, and for me to generate the power requires a bigger swing making a smaller weapon bigger to use than say a waki in a confined space. Now say I have to traverse a field, whats wrong with a lowlander and a shotty if they start getting too close? No zombies or people with intelligence, FLIR, cold beer and a .30-06 i'll enter when nothing left is warmer than my beer.

Having fired 454, 10mm, 460 Rowland, and 44 Magnum (and enjoyed it!), I'm going to disagree. 45 ACP in a semi-auto pistol over a revolver any day.
You could also just get a 9mm and remember to aim. Cheaper to feed, faster follow-ups, greater capacity on most S/A pistols s 45 or 40.

a kukri, a katana, and a mosin nagant, for starters. I would also carry my ruger super red hawk .454 casull, it is a awesome gun!

In a SHTF apocalyptic situation it has to be remembered that ammunition will NOT be something that'll be easily or readily found. Sure at first there might be a good supply of it but after a while ammunition will be in short supply and very high demand.
That being the case I'd want to use a gun that started out with a very large supply base of ammo - namely a 9mm, .45acp or .40sw. These cartridges are commonly used by law enforcement, military and private security members and are also very popular among civilians. As such there is a huge supply of these cartridges loaded and available. That makes it easier to stockpile said ammo and if you're running short its likely to be easier to find this ammo than something like say .454cas.
While I've shot and love .44mags and .454 cas and also .500SW mag along with a few other large bore calibers (like the 600 Nitro revolver - which I might add hurt like a mofo and I have no desire to shoot it ever again after only 3 shots), I can honestly say I prefer the .45acp in a defensive and/or offensive or social work type scenario. The large caliber stuff is good for hunting large and dangerous game but I don't believe its well suited for social work.
In those situations a service caliber pistol is best suited for quick target acquisition and quick (easier) follow-up shots.

I have a half dozen Cold Steel Sjamboks. I have used them for moving cattle around in the pens, but they are a seriously flimsey and crappy rendition of a real African Sjambok. However, that said, they are great for pissing off your drunk buddies when used to sting their legs. Just wait until they are drunk enough they can't catch you and beat your ass in return. Sorry to derail this thread. What were you guys talking about?...

Personally, I'd likely travel on the heavy side,and slowly and ditch kit as needed. If I had my truck, id just bring all my guns and blades, and see what I found in the way of ammo. Id hate to leave my 30-30 behind for instance, and then find a cache brimming with 30-30 rounds. ssuming it was just me on foot, with one or so other people.. My personal loadout would be my Sig 226, my Grizzly shotgun, and my Ruger .308. On my side I'd also have my SOG Machete, and my sword.(assuming by that time I had become proficient with it) We'd split the other supplies among the group, and take turns with the heavier semprini like water etc. I don't see a reason to travel far without a vehicle, and truthfully, I'd find a good place to bunker down, my house even. I have some good supplies and some knowledge of how to collect the rest. "Ideally" it'd be me and the friends who we've actually discussed this, and we'd have 3 or for trucks, one for scouting, the rest for transport, and we'd travel until we found a quieter place. Stay off the main roads, and try and find a secluded fresh water lake. That having been said, a true shtf scenario leaves no time for the "ideal" so i'd be grabbing my kit, my gf, and bunkering down here until we could get comms with some other survivors.
This also reminds me that I need to get another good folder. I lost my SOG a year ago and haven't had the wherewithal to replace it
