That's a fine rifle. I'd have plans to own one if I didn't want a SBR HK-91 setup as a MP5 from hell (I think SAS used something like that) and a Kel-Tec RFB more. I will probably have a FAL, one day, when I'm all rich and famous and stuff

I found this Matthew Bracken essay on effective weapons and tactics in one urban apocalyptic genre -- socially engineered class warfare. Was it inentional? Doesn't matter, this will be the reality. Matthew's what-if scenarios are informed by his experience and recent historical events. When the Music StopsThe scoped AR-15 appears as a viable counter-riot tool in the flash-mob America.

Placing stock in war games isn't always a great idea, but I have to agree with the "camper" always wins.

Get out of the city first is always my strategy. I have the bushcraft skills and tools to back that plan.

That's not always feasible, depending on location. Here in the desert, you're screwed unless you can find a source of water; but the few around would be where everyone else is heading too...

Everyone will be trying to get out of the city on the few highways that exist which will rapidly become parking lots and/or waylay points. Ideally one's city should abut a mountain range, desert, frontier. But transit is a precarious place to be.

Only the M1 Garand is in 30-06. The rest of the M1s and the M2 are .308. Then there is the M1 Carbine in 30-06 Carbine, which is practically impossible to find (the ammunition, not the rifle) and the re-bored M1 Carbine in .308 Short Action. I am looking at the M2, myself. 30 Rd Mag in .308 that can also fire 7.62. With the complete set-up my dealer has, I am looking at a grand for a weapon effective out to 1,000 yards but in semi-auto for close action. Of course, just because the Weapon is effective out that far, doesn't mean the shooter is. A 2X zoom carries me to 300 yards with an M4. Iron Sights and I can do 200 with either an M4 or M16. I tend to do somewhat better with heavier rifles, as well. M4 is just too light.

Wait! Stop! Huh?
Just to set the record straight. The U.S Service Rifle, .30 caliber M1 (Garand) is a .30-'06. The U.S. .30 caliber carbine, M1 and M2 (select fire) fire .30 Carbine ammo, not .308 (7.62x51mm NATO) The U.S. Service Rifle, M14 fires 7.62x51mm NATO and is reproduced as the Springfield M1A sporting rifle for civilian markets.
What the heck is the .30-06 Carbine round? And what is the .308 Short Action round?
So Taran, what are you looking for? A sporting variant of the M14 (Springfield M1A)? Or a Class III full-auto capable M2 carbine?

And Mike said what I was going to say. FOr confusion, I;m going to throw the:
Mini-14: Garnad/M14 style action chambered in .223/5.56
and
Mini-30: Garand/M14 style action chambered in 7.62-39 Russian
into the mix of "Things That Are Confusingly SImilar To The M1"

The only thing I could think of is the M1 Garand Tanker in 30/06 caliber, which is hard to find. With a 308 chamber adapter it could be a dual caliber rifle. The only problem with a chamber adapter is it will sometimes reject along with the empty case. Wouldn't be able to use a 30rd mag. The only M1 garand type rifle I known in 308 is the BM59 but it uses a 20rd mag., they are hard to find now too.

That's an unrealistic expectation at best.

Alright, well again since we're talking about a Apocaplyse. A lot talk about .22's have been in discussion. Mostly rifles/ pistols. So yeah.

You need weapons (pl) suitable to the role for which they are intended:
(1) handgun -- out to 25 yards (worn, not born) (2) shotgun -- out to 50 yards (slug) (multi-function) (3) carbine -- out to 300 yards (4) Long Range Precision Rifle -- out to 800 yards (5) Ultra-Long Range Precision Rifle -- out to 1200+ yards (6) Hard Target Interdiction -- out to 1500+ yards
One grab'n'go arsenal might consists of:
(1) Glock 23 (40S&W) (3) AR15 HBAR 16" (5.56Nato) (4) Win70 HBV (308Win)

There is no single answer for that, other than the firearm you have with you and the ammo for it. In my personal opinion, an intermediary caliber semi-auto rifle is going to be the best generalist, followed by a combative caliber pistol of quality manufacture, followed by a .22 followed by something in a full size rifle cartridge. If you read deeper into some of the discussion here, you could have drawn this conclusion.

hey just what you see pal  this one is impossible to answer for me,i'll be taking a 12 gauge as that's all i have to work with, you have to use what you have to hand saying that i still advocate a good .22 rifle and pistol combo for under 50 yard zombies,or a 5.56 or even better for me a .357 lever carbine coupled with a solid .357 revolver for all short to medium threats in england though every single farm house has a 12 bore shotgun, ammunition though heavy is plentifull,i would most likely take my greener gp single shot 12 guage,i wont feel bad for having a single shot, it's very light and handy,i can reload it suprisingly fast and it's built like a brick sh£$ house i dont plan on going gung ho,stealth planning food water/shelter and a good close quarters melee weapon will be higher on my list

I'll take a destroyer-mounted Gauss Rifle, thank you. Nuclear powered, not diesel. With a good crew that worship me as their god and captain.
