Ok I'm bored. I hope this poll isn't too brainless Personally I answer 1- thieves here are too poor to afford a gun...

Who ever said they BOUGHT their guns? Ideally, I'd run a series of maneuvers ideally resulting in the would-be thief's apprehension. Some or all of the above may be included. Most likely, I'd wonder what the dog was on about.

I would grab a sword/dagger or just something heavy if a sword is not close by and try to catch the thief, but if I see they have a gun I will try to make them unable to use it by any means necessary, so if I have to kill, I will and no regrets about that, I would be protecting myself and my family and I would do anything to ensure that.

I rent and dont own guns, so I got a big flashlight and arming sword, if he's smart and gets sight of me as I'm all in his eyes with the light and see's my sword I'm hoping he's got good sense to start running, seriously I would feel more safe and "manly" if my intimidating manner got him legging it. If he attacks me (and I have enough perception to see he's unarmed and a dumb-bum then he gets a belting with flashlight and pommel/hilt). If he attacks and is armed, well were all in for a rough few months to come are'nt we .......... I wont take a trip to "hurty town" unless you take me there ........... I always hope they just run.

A ridiculously bright flashlight is a handy thing to have. Blind the guy if you can. Heck, hope he's dumb enough to be wearing night vision when that thing hits his retinas. Ouch. Ideally, this super-bright flashlight would be mounted on a projectile weapon of some sort, one just powerful enough to put a man down without endangering whatever may be behind him.

Under UK law, injuring or killing an intruder with a sword/gun is going to result in some serious jail time(in the UK its an offence to carry anykind of weapon with the intention of using it, even in self defence.
Instead of risking this I would release my four legged friend who would probably rip them a new semprini. I may take some time to get the dog back under controle.

1# Grab a sword and go investigate
Sadly actually live in a place where this is an issue. Can make a 5 minute walk to the police station. However doesn't stop cops and people from getting shot, ran over, robbed and or jumped. So the truth of it is. No real point in me calling the cops. They'll be here soon enough, if they actually show up.
So when the shots start grab my blade. When the fighting breaks out grab my blade. And when people knock on the door at 3 am then too. A friend nearly got jumped outside my apartment. They chased him to my door. Another did get jumped just across the road. This wasn't why i got into swords. And thankfully never had to. But its more close calls than i like.

The bad guys around my neck of the woods often have guns and home invasions are popular. My house has been broken into before which lead to all kinds of heartache. I have guns and have been a gun dealer. If they come when I am not home then they have the dogs and alarm to deal with and police on the way. If they come when I am home then they are looking to do more than burglary and that's what they will get. I am not so cavalier as to say I would have no regrets at having to hurt or kill someone but I would deal with that after I know I did what was necessary to keep those under my charge safe. Living with hurting someone trying to hurt me or mine would be much easier than living with me or mine being hurt and knowing I could have tried to stop it but didn't.

Mike's house is bound to be the safest of all our homes, provided he still lives in the same place. That was a bloody castle, inside and out. You're not getting into that thing unless he opens the door, and that's only if the dogs let you knock. I want to live in Mike's house. (And play with his toys... )

I will add here that a member of my household is in law enforcement and many of my friends are local and state LEO's so I know what cop's really think about law abiding citizens having guns for home and self protection. Owning a gun and being prepared to use one are two very different things however. You don't buy a car and not use it until the day you need to go somewhere so you take it out and learn to drive on the way.

Grab a short sword (Oniyuri or Ko-Kat) and a pistol, that way I would have the option to use my sword if I wanted to. If the perp ran empty handed, I would probably fire a deliberate shot to miss, just so he would think he barely escaped death and would not want to take his chances there again. If he attacks, then the coroner is going to get some work

I'd use whatever was nearby.
I own both swords *and* guns, however, in California you have to keep the gun unloaded when not in use (last I checked). Not too handy if you have an intruder . . .
"Hey, are you breaking into my home? You are? Hold on; I have to load up. Just stay where you are and don't move, okay?" ;-)

I dont use guns(for now) so i would grab my bowie(oniyuri coming soon so....) AND call the police. Not because I think they could help me in time , but to catch the guy if he runs or to be there incase someone gets hurt or worse. Ideally, I would hope to just run an intruder off rather than hurt them. But in life, nothing is for certain and complex situations do arise.....

I love swords...and as of now, that's what I personally grab...but if I could, I'd use .40 cal. Hollow point and a laser sight. Recoil of a nine, stopping power of a .45, and that little red dot is incredibly unnerving. Seeing the dot and not knowing what is on the other end...yeesh. No thank you.
I also have a 12ga with a really loud action. Keep the chamber empty so you can give out a warning pump. Good stuff.
In the end, though, I'm still more comfy with a sword.

I am sure that i would at most feel only a very small fraction of sadness knowing I wounded/killed a thief/burglar/criminal than what I would feel if the person had done the same with a loved one. the reason why I would prefer a sword over a gun/rifle/shotgun is because I would rather check all my house to see if there were others working with him/her and if they have a weapon to use on me or someone else.

This isn't a theoretical for me, years ago I was awakened to the sound of someone trying to open my back door. I owned firearms but in my half awake condition I (instinctively?) grabbed for a wall hanger katana I owned at the time and trotted off towards the back/kitchen door. It wasn't until there was nothing between me and and the presumably would-be thief but that door when it occurred to me to wonder if he might be armed with something a bit more lethal than I was carrying and if perhaps I'd chosen unwisely in my armament. It was about this time my three dogs showed up and escorted the unseen gentleman from the property, rendering the whole question moot. If I had it to do over again I suspect I'd do the same thing except now it wouldn't be a wall hanger I'd be grabbing.

Mossberg 500 loaded with heavy field loads of #6 shot to reduce the risk of overpenetration. Although there have been plenty of times I have heard a bump in the night and just grabbed my Windlass warhammer or my old Japanese Arisaka bayonet. I truly hope that I never have to harm anyone to protect my family and myself, but would do it without hesitation if needed....
