Glock 17C with Streamlight TLR-1 on my nightstand. Two in the chest, one in the head, repeat as needed per intruder. If they are in your house in Georgia, you may legally use lethal force. I am a firm believer in using a firearm against any intruder in one's home; otherwise criminals end up getting more confident in their ways.
And, for you guys investigating noises in your home with anything less than a firearm - I honestly hope the intruder entering your home does not have one.

I keep a pump shotgun in the closet. Hopefully the sound of the pump being pulled back and released will be enough. If not, I keep a Browning 40SW in the night stand next to the bed with a loaded clip in the drawer below it. If the sound of the clip being put in and the slide chambering a round doesn't work. Well......

the only gun i have in my room is an unloaded 22. rifle so if the sh**t hits the fun im generally stuck with a bladed weapon or stick/bokken/jo whatever. when i hear an odd noise i generally go investigate with a knife tucked behind my arm so if its nothing hostile i can hide it and they wont get scared. i heard someone run by our house once and mess with the door and thats the only real thing thats happened and at that time i came out with an iaito.

I love swords...and as of now, that's what I personally grab...but if I could, I'd use .40 cal. Hollow point and a laser sight. Recoil of a nine, stopping power of a .45, and that little red dot is incredibly unnerving. Seeing the dot and not knowing what is on the other end...yeesh. No thank you. I also have a 12ga with a really loud action. Keep the chamber empty so you can give out a warning pump. Good stuff. In the end, though, I'm still more comfy with a sword. ha ha, i remember when that psycho was in the neighborhood and you busted out the 12 gauge lol. aswell as the like 50 swords that were in the room. that was the one house that guy was lucky not to break into lol.

Kinda depends on how urgent the break in seems to be. I live in a very small apartment. Not much room to hide while calling the police. My Ruger hangs in a holster on my bedpost. I'd grab that and then go investigate. If there was time, then I'd call 911. Most likely if a quick break-in occured I'd only have time to grab the gun, roll out of bed on the floor and hope.

Eh would never try and beat a bullet with a blade. Then again that's all i got. So waiting for cops that may or may not arrive. Or hiding which only seems to work in the movies. LOL still leaves you hoping they're not heavily armed. In the end no matter the armament match up. You've got a fraction of a second to settle it.

Honestly don't know what exactly I would do. So much depends on the exact circumstances. I do know that from having a young child I am a very light sleeper, I can get up at to my boy's room in 1.5 seconds and the floor boards everywhere creak when stepped on. I can say for certain that I would be between my family and an intruder before they got halfway up the stairs. Beyond that it would be messy for both of us.

i voted other. i have a lightweight aluminum baseball bat near my bed, which should be good for a lightly armed or unarmed intruder. i usually go for the crowbar in my zombie supplies though, which is just a easy to access as the bat. There was a time(i know its sad for a 14 year old to have the readiness to defend his home, just stay with me) when someone jumped our back fence. I grabbed my Kabar USMC fighting knife and went out with a flashlight, only for him to see me and hop over into the neighbors yard. i think he kept running, because my neighbor yelled "call the police!"

I'd stun them into submission with my charisma and charming wit. ;D You are my hero Mike. Personally, I'd grab either my .45 pistol loaded with hollow point or my shotgun loaded with 8.5 shot (bird shot) as the first round and then they increase in size each shot after that. But, if my sword happens to be the closest thing to me, I'd grab that as I made my way for the gun. Once I got the gun, I'll dial up the authorities, to let them know they might wanna head on over this'a'way. First shots would be low if it came down to shooting, if he's high on PCP or something, each shot after that would be center mass. I'd hate it if I had to kill someone, but if it comes down to me or him, I'd rather it be him.

Considering the only gun in my house is upstairs and unloaded, I would hope a surprise attack with a knife would be enough. Although, unfortunately, here in Canada the law practically demands you to let them have all you have and not do them harm and depend on the police to put them in jail till they get out again for good behavior. I hate Canada sometimes.

For me, it is whatever is on hand, call 911, throw phone at wife, make sure the kids are ok and block access to my people.
Drawing a gun in self defence is a one way trip to jail (improper storage, unlawful discharge or some other thing that "self defence" doesn't really get you off). Owning any object for the purpose of self defence is illegal in Canada. Using something at hand is fine. Keeping a baseball bat beside the bed for self defence -> trip to jail. Make sure the ball, glove and sweaty shirt are at hand when the cops show up so you have a plausible reason to have had the item at hand.

This is easy. Being a sword enthusiast I grab the best blade for the situation: Most likely my Windlass XIV. It's short, good for thrusting or cutting. Good for close quarters work. Very deadly. A flashlight is also a good idea. I have a nice, large, powerful Magnum that also makes a good club.
Then I grab a phone, find a dark corner and call the police and hope they show up before the intruders find me.
My reasons?
1)Where I live you can get in trouble for hurting someone, even those breaking into your house, unless you can prove they mean you immediate harm. And they better be armed. Well, I'd rather not have to worry about all that so I'll take my chances on the police.
2)The police around here respond very quickly. Maybe 5 minutes if they are slow. I have called 911 in the past (not for intruders) and the police are always there within 5 minutes, other emergency agencies within minutes of that. Considering we have the highest paid police force in the country, it's the least they could do! They're pretty polite too.
3)I'm not Mr. Actionman. I don't need to hack my way through someone to prove my manliness. Let the police take care of them for me. They are the pros.
4)I don't want anyone bleeding on my tiled floor. That crap stains the grout!
All this is considering that I don't actually have to protect myelf in a direct confrontation. Then I would do whatever is within my abilities, including the aforementioned hacking, to defend myself.

Wow, 5 minutes! Your really lucky ChrisA....We don't have any police here. They have to come from the next town over.....So about half an hour or more sometimes.....People pretty much have to be ready to take care of things either themselves or have someone close that could help them.

I don't dislike "all cops" some are actually good people. But the fit is always hitting the shan somewhere. And in the end cops are just out maned, outgunned and in some places under trained. Its unfortunate, that said got more faith in myself. And depending on who they are my neighbors.

... 4)I don't want anyone bleeding on my tiled floor. That crap stains the grout! EXACTLY! What a nasty mess. Yuck. My local LEOs are very understanding. The old " If you shoot 'em, drag 'em inside" BS is definitely not the thing here (besides being a stupidly guilty thing to do). It's more like " If you shoot 'em, drag 'em outside in the yard so they don't mess up your floor" with all the LEOs around my neck o' the woods.

Ok first of all - to all you Canadians out there - your government's stand on guns stink worse than my dog's feces after its stolen my pad thai. Another reason I'm glad I don't live there.
Now about the scenario - I've said it before and will say it again. Grab the Mossy 500 loaded with #4 shot (but the last two rounds are 1oz slugs in 3" shells) as well ass my modified 1911 that's hanging from my bed in this neat new "bedside" holster and go investigate. My lady will call 911 while I put myself between the danger and my family. I can't rely on the dog yet since she's only 4.5 mos old. Not very intimidating right now.
When the cops arrive they can clean up the mess.
I love swords and have a few katana as personal swords but that is not what I'd grab for home defense nor would I grab knives. All that involves getting into melee range and while I am traines in hand to hand combat as well as swordplay I would rather trust my firearms training in a situation like that. Call me a coward if you like - but I don't want to get that close to intruders till they've been rendered not dangerous.
Btw about that, I would never ever shoot low if I decide I have to shoot. Its always to center of mass. Heads are too small a target to hit reliably. If I have to put a couple rounds of shot into an intruder's chest to neutralize a threat so be it. Its not with any intent or desire to kill but if they die is their own fault. Carpeting and tiling cost less than the lives and safety of all those under my care and protection.
LEO is based not more that 10 minute away but somehow have consistently failed to arrive in my neighborhood in less than 30 min when called. A lot can happen in 30 min, even 10 min.
Those of you who would rather grab a sword or knife had better hope your intruder is unarmed. Knife to knife, sword to sword or even sword to baseball bat/crowbar all have odds that just aren't to my liking.
A prophet once said that if you have no sword to sell your clothes and go buy one. Now it can be extrapolated that if you live in America and can legally own a gun but have none you shoul... Well you get the idea.
Just my $.02 though.

Well you get the idea. Just my $.02 though. Well said was waiting for someone to bring up that issue. An innocent mistake in my youth makes that a problem. Won't go into details, well say nobody got hurt. And wasn't even doing anything wrong. Just wasn't close enough to home. But because of that i can't legally own a gun. Sure i can go out an get one. And if it ever comes to it hey, gun. But surviving the break in. Doesn't mean i'd survive my time in jail for possession of an illegal unregistered firearm.

I voted "grab a sword" but that is only because they are close at hand (always). Regarding laws... in South Africa this voting pole would be a dud. First of all, all voting in S.A. is rigged. Second, the law states that it is a basic right to protect yourself and your family but if you do you get arrested because your life is "never" in immediate danger (how convenient) Thirdly, trying to obtain a firearm license is the single most difficult thing to do in S.A. (other than buying one illegally. This is the easiest thing to do in S.A.) So in S.A. if you hear something break in your home you hope its not to late because the robbers here always come in gangs of 3 and more or you run downstairs and scream at the cat for digging in the bin.

Are we talking about Asain gang style home invasion here or just merely robbers kick in the door ? First of all I will observe one rule that taught to me by one of the Sergeant " Respect your enemy " What is the meaning of this .It means the enemy ,in this case is criminal and he is not going to be idoit mindless drunk so I am going to respect him (or them ) and veiw them as heavily arms group of people who come to do me harm ,they will have semi automitic pistol, rifle , shot gun , knives and (god forbid !) sword and I will respect them futher by acknowledge that they know how to use those weapons and they will know the military tactic and have the mean of communication .They will have element of surprise and superior fire power and manuverability. So I will give the enemy a proper respect by engaging them (hopefull after the tiny window of opportunity of hearing the door get kick in ) with my Mosbie 500 from whatever the cover I could find (most likely I probably will be on prone position ) .I am going to left the cell phone open so the dispatcher can hear all the commotion and noise which I can use to defense me in court .I probably try to avoid death charge with any edge weapon because I hate getting holes in my chest from 9 mm or .45 caliber bullets. If I have an option I will barricade myself in the room and I will never ever conduct the search and destroy mission inside my home because it is suck getting bushwhack in my own home and no property worth more than my life or my loveone or even those low life criminal (oop forget the respect part ) .That being said I shall quoted the important advice from the honorable peace loving enlightenment Dhalai Lama from Tibet " When someone come to your house to kill you , you should rise up and shoot him to defense yourself (and loveone )"

I have a kukri right by my bed. I'd call police and go look, as most home invaders don't have guns - and sure as hell not where I live. Would do the same with any crazy activity - luckily local police also know me so I (probably) wouldn't be shot by them as can happen..
Also - seriously about unloaded gun in Cali? That's..uh...different. I mean in your HOME? Sounds like the UK...except of course you can't really have a gun there..
