I need to build a cutting stand today so that I can try my hand at cutting a few bottles. What kind of oil can I use for my sword? I forgot to oil some online. Would gun oil work? Shadowhowler, how come the scabbards don't make your swords rust? I thought that they will make swords rust eventually, so I wrapped a towel around the blade of my LS and stored it in the shipping box.

I use 3-in-1 oil, you can get it at any hardware store or Home Depot. As for rust... the scabbards are wood core-leather wrapped... its fine to store em in there as far as I know. In fact, there is some debate as to the leather only scabbards being harmful or not, but wood ones I have never heard of their being a problem. After all, a Saya (scabbard for katana) is wood... and people store them in there. I have seen no evidence of rust issues from my swords stored in wood scabbards.

John, no to the towel, yes to storage in-scabbard; you have a wood-core scabbard which is what you want. If it was a plain leather (no wood) scabbard I'd advocate NOT storing your sword in one of those- wood core is just fine though. And...we're waiting!

Well I never broke in the threads about Jonathan not having a sword yet and what he was going to order.I did want to congratulate him on getting his first sword and welcome him to the world of (it never ends). You will always want more swords you now have (SAS)sword aquisition syndrome)Congrats it's a lot of fun but as we are all saying take your time and be extra carefull. BTW a 2nd for the 3 in 1 oil it works fine.

The scabbard on my 303s is so loose that it slides out at any angle but perfectly upright! Ok. A slight exaggeration, but not much of one. But to me the scabbard is just something to hold the sword. If I want a really nice one I'll have it made.
Another word up for 3 in 1 oil. And remember! Very light coat. It doesn't take a lot to protect the blade. Remember to reapply after cutting.
Now get out there and swing that sword (carefully!) and tell us how it feels.

Congratulations on the first sword! A good choice!
For the loose fitting scabbard: a piece of felt judiciously glued inside the mouth could help, I think...

Jonathan, if you have gun oil use it, it works great. I use it, 3-in1, choji, and I also have some silicone gun cloths that I've used on some swords. basicaly aything designed to protect steel fro rusting does what you want, get the cheapest and most available one. I say go ahead and store in scabbard but check it regularly. that way you'll learn about how long it can go before it starts to rust. more than likely(being a new sword owner) you'll handle it a little every day or most days at least. make sure you clean it after handling and you will have no trouble.

my tried & true method........a old sock soaked in 3-n-1 oil stored in a Ziploc bag. Yes, just a light coating........been using the same sock for years..only have to put a little oil on it every 2 months or so.

Jonathan, just glue a piece of leather in the scabbard mouth. That will make a tight fit.
Congrats, by the way!!

I finally took my 304S outside today for some dry handling. I really like the balance of it and the overall feel. My form is absolutely horrible, though. My movements felt clumsy and awkward, so I am going to practice strikes before I try to cut anything. I was outside for five minutes and the UPS man showed up. He saw me in the front yard with my sword and shouted, "Got you another one!" He asked me if I collected them and I told him that I did. He told me that one guy said he had 400. I went back inside for some scissors and then came back outside to open up the Norman's box. It was packaged much better than the 304S was. My first impressions were of the scabbard. The Norman scabbard is actually nicer than the 304S scabbard, in my opinion. It fits perfectly (I can hold it by the scabbard upside down and the sword doesn't fall out) and the leatherwork is even and nicely done. The edge is also sharper than I expected. I couldn't tell a huge difference in the sharpening between the Norman and 304S. The 304S was sharpened a little bit sharper and more even, but the Norman was also very sharp. There is a strip of the blade about 6 inches long that is blunt, but it doesn't appear to be nearly as blunt as Tom's EMSHS. I will post pictures in the future, because right now I don't have a camera that is very good.

You just doubled the size of your collection! NICE. How does that Norman feel in hand? I know you don't have another single-hander to compare it to, but does it feel maneuverable? Oh, and as far as which is sharper, you won't really know until you get out there and CUT with them

The Norman feels very nice in hand. The grip is comfortable and the balance is just right for what I want. My only problem comes from the pommel. I love the way the pommel looks, but it digs into my hand some. I will get used to it eventually, but right now it feels slightly awkward. The brazil nut does have an advantage - it prevents the sword from flying out of my hand. I would have cut with both swords today, but I don't have any lumber for building a stand yet.

Gotcha. I was wondering about that pommel--I thought it might be uncomfortable to use. But if it fits well, I'm sure it's be a cinch to get used to.

It isn't really as bad as it sounds. I should be comfortable with it soon. I forgot to tell you that the UPS guy asked me if I liked the Highlander movies, lol.

I get the feeling that you are new with swords (as in have no training in any weapon arts or even much messing around with a broom stick). Please don't take this the wrong way. Learning how to handle a sword with a sharp is begging to get hurt. I know I bounced some shots off my shins a number of times learning fendente's and I even managed to hit my own forehead once with enough force to raise a decent bruise. If that was a sharp I'd probably have managed to kill my self with that particularly spastastic move.
Have fun with them, but please treat them like they want nothing more than to kill or maim you.

I am actually somewhat paranoid when holding a sword. I think part of the reason that they feel strange in hand is my over-cautiousness.

Jonathan, about the pommel digging in , maybe this thread will help: www.myarmoury.com/talk/viewtopic.php?t=2478The matter as been discussed here also, don't remember exactly where thought... Hope this helps...and congrats for the Norman (tis on my list also!)

Thank you for that link, Reflingar. I have read some of it before, but I forgot about the picture.

So, Jon, what do you think about your swords? It's been long enough that you should have had a chance to get used to them a bit. How do they feel? Have you done any cutting yet? Lots of questions, I know. Humor me. ;D -Slayer

I have been able to go outside with my swords much due to the weather. However, today was different. I ate breakfast and bought some supplies for building cutting stands. I built two of them, and while they are crude and rough, they are solid. About an hour ago I finished my last stand and decided to try cutting my first bottle ever. It was really the first thing that I ever tried cutting with my or anyone else's sword. So I got a camera, a water bottle, and a Valiant Armoury practical Longsword and walked to my cutting stands. I practice swing my sword a few times and placed the bottle on the stand. I told my brother to turn the camera on, and I slashed with the sword. I heard a ring and noticed that the bottle was severed in two pieces. I couldn't even feel the sword go through the bottle, and was surprised that I didn't bat the bottle off the stand. I took my sword back inside to fill up some more bottles and it started to rain, so I have only cut one bottle so far. I could post the video for you, but I will wait until after I cut some more and then post one long video.
