Hey everyone! On my evening jog I was thinking about rangers in the normal fantasy sens(ie Tolkien or D&D styled rangers.)
In regards to their combat gear, what do you think they might really carry? I personally think a crossbow or bow paired with a messer or large knife would be the most convenient. Thought a sword and buckler may be great too.
As for armor I'd think a lighter or medium padded gambeson would be adequate. I doubt they'd wear much more because they'd like to remain stealthy.
What are your thoughts!?

I believe the basket is too large to be considered perfectly historically accurate (if that sort of thing bothers you). That aside, I've been very tempted to get one... It is, IMO, one of the best looking swords offered by Windlass. It does bother me but really handling as close to the originals as possible is more important than basket hilt size. But thank you for pointing it out! And maybe I can wait around until it becomes deal of the day too.

I am a big proponent of the Rapier and Scottish Basket Hilt. so around 1450-1750 for me I am trying to get more into swords in the period of the American Revolution. I LOVE medieval/15th century arming swords. Really my "dream" sword is probably the Albion burgundian or a really beautiful messer. But at my university we're doing a Colonial Christmas with costumes and readings of period stuff and it's really getting me interested in swords of the period. I also want to learn more about 16/17th century swords as some peoples above mentioned. They're really interesting. Preferably English back/broadsword.

I haven't found any good reproductions for swords of the Napoleonic era. Now to be honest I've only seen the cold steel and museum replica swords.
Are they decent? What about 18th century or swords of the American Civil War?
Thanks for any help!

Footsoldiers can have depending on their financial status from as little as just a bow, arrows and a knife to full knightly equipment. Most would have a combination of light padding, mail, kettlehat helmet, sword, shield and spear. Instead of mail can stand good, thick gambeson. Do you think handaxes/battle axes would also be common?

So, I am thinking about working toward a 13th century knight or soldier kit. I have a pretty good idea what going for a knight might entail for this time period, but what about a soldier? I have the hanwei tinker arming sword type 12 blade so it fits with this time frame. I also have a heater shield I want to paint. I have an ok gambeson, want to get a better one. What would your recommendations be? This is what I look like right now, with mens joggers for cheap hosen and butted mail that was a gift I got a very long time ago

Norman conquest through the crusades, mostly. William the Conqueror was a great-great-great+ grandfather, so interested in the era that contains his family through Henry III, pretty much. I want to trace my ancestry back to the middle ages. I have English, Dutch and German heritage that I know of but I'm not sure how far back it goes. I'd love to know and focus my studies as well!

I have no favourite time period, I like them all, bronze swords, kopesh, celtic swords, gladii, spathae, migration period swords, viking age swords, knightly swords, twohanders, rapiers, sabers and all the stuff from other cultures. Only the daily focus changes. I feel like that's me too I just focus mostly on medieval stuff. Lately my focus has gone to side swords and gladii.

For me, I'd say the Bronze Age and 14th Century... Though saying that feels a bit cheaty, since so many earlier swords were still in use during the 14th century. Oh really? How far back would they go? Like say 12-13th century swords were still popular then?

Hello! What is your favorite time period for swords?(Or any weapons for that matter)
Mine would have to be 13th century and 15th century for both swords and other weapons.

I've had the same issue using longswords. I tend to hit the ground if I'm trying to move with my swings. So I'm assuming from what everyone's saying here, that maybe for me a 1 handed sword is better? Like arming sword/messer/falchion? Because I can't fight fire with fire because I'm not bigger/taller. Right? I guess a fun way of putting it might be to fight fire with water and extinguish it. If you use something that's tailored to your strengths your opponent will have a rough time combating your use of the weapon, especially if they're inexperienced with it. So there would be a bit of a mind game at work if your sparring partner is overly familiar with the longsword and not very familiar with your weapon. Strategic poking with an arming sword during a longsword wielder's wind-up during movements is a sure way to catch the longsword user off guard and close in for a strike. Any weapon that keeps you light on your feet and capable of controlling distance and space is desirable, so an arming sword and a buckler would be great for this. Or if you really want to mess with your opponent, use a messer in your left hand rather than a buckler. Hardly anyone practices that and the combination of weapons offers versatile techniques I see what you're saying. I do love using sword buckler/heater shield alot. I do love the longsword though, I was just curious if there's a "better" weapon out there for shorties like me I know it's irrelevant because I wont be fighting for my life with these anymore but I still think it's a fun discussion. Thanks for your input tho! I got some great information/opinions on the subject.

Would sword and buckler be more ideal than longsword for a shorter person maybe?

There's something I discovered when cutting, and that is the distance of the blade to the ground. A blade that's too long is a little difficult to keep off the ground unless you're just stabbing with it or cutting at a more or less 45 degree angle (or horizontally). But vertical cuts or diagonal cuts that are higher than 45 degrees are more difficult to control and prevent from hitting the ground unless you step with it properly and have proper form for rotating your arms (something easy to say but takes time to train). So I'm an advocate of finding the right length - the maximum length - you can use without endangering your sword or your foot. At 5'10, I find any blade above 40 inches gets way too hard to control, so I much prefer the 35-37 inchers to have some margin for error. Right?

I have a friend who's about your height. I'm 6' 2", so I'll do some parring with him and see what happens. Honestly though, I'd say go for longer weapons no matter how tall you are, as long as they fit the terrain (pikes inside a house generally don't do too well). Cool thanks!

I'm quite a short fellow(5ft 8in), shortest of my friends except one. Would the "best" strategy for me to be go with smaller swords, like a messer? Or go with longer ones to compensate my lack of reach? I'd like to keep this topic confined to medieval as that's my favorite time period. But I do love the gladius, rapier and various renaissance swords Also I'd like to stick to the topic of swords, I know the best on a battlefield would be a polearm or ranged weapon of some kind lol. I think you would be on the taller side compared to people who actually wielded swords back in the day. I know but I'm fighting people today mostly everyone I'm around is taller than me.

So recent threads with hypothetical questions like „What would be your favorite sword in an apocalyptic/zombie/civilization breakdown/shtf scenario inspired me for this… Imagine you was forced to do a time travel, with the time point and place of your travel decided by hazard. You could take one item of your collection with you or alternatively one item you plan to acquire in the near future. It cannot be a firearm, but must be a sharp or blunt melee weapon or knife etc. So let's have some fun with this and ask ourselves what item we would choose for our travel back or forth in time, to a completely unknown destination... I’ll start this by saying that I`ll choose my CS viking hand axe, mounted on the shaft it comes with from the factory. The really strange thing is I came to the forums today to make this same post.... I'd have to pick my H/T arming sword. If I am on a battle field assuming I have armor I want a 2handed polearm like a halberd, spear or my favorite, the billhook. In that case I'd take it as a backup with a buckler, or in the 13th century I'd take a heater shield.

I watch his videos all the time however I was just curious if there were any other context they'd be used in. I have a hard time picturing myself dueling anyone lol, but I guess that's just me (and I'm not a late medieval/early renaissance nobleman either I guess) so I guess if I were to magically travel back or to a fantasy world, the longsword may not be my weapon of choice.
