A large bowie on the hip. Portable, useful at both large and small tasks, deadly. A tomahawk with hammer on one side would be another choice, as it is still portable, utilitarian, deadly, and you can replace the handle with relative ease. The third idea is a CS Bushman (talked about below when someone mentioned quarterstaff), as you've a knife while also having the ability to put on a stick for a spear. I guess the universal answer would be something versatile and hopefully portable.

That's a tough one. Suppose I ended up in an urban area run by some kind of oppressive regime (say Nazi occupied Poland) - in this case, I'd want something easy to conceal (like a knife). However, if I got dropped somewhere in 13th century Asia, right in the path of Genghis Khan, I'd want some kind of pole arm.
Eh, who am I kidding. There's no way I'd last more than a minute against the Gestapo or Mongol horde. Best chance would be to head for the hills and try to survive the elements at least. Either that or join up with a local resistance group (good luck with that, as I almost positively wouldn't speak the language).
So... probably a tomahawk with a wooden shaft. That way I can grab a long pole and make an impromptu pole-axe, or put a really short handle on it and tuck it under my coat. Also useful for wilderness survival - which is a definite possibility in the old days.

I'd probably go with a quarterstaff. Effective defense by itself, and can be converted to a spear or polearm with local materials in the pre-gunpowder eras. Also wouldn't look particularly unusual right up into modern times.

So recent threads with hypothetical questions like „What would be your favorite sword in an apocalyptic/zombie/civilization breakdown/shtf scenario inspired me for this… Imagine you was forced to do a time travel, with the time point and place of your travel decided by hazard. You could take one item of your collection with you or alternatively one item you plan to acquire in the near future. It cannot be a firearm, but must be a sharp or blunt melee weapon or knife etc. So let's have some fun with this and ask ourselves what item we would choose for our travel back or forth in time, to a completely unknown destination... I’ll start this by saying that I`ll choose my CS viking hand axe, mounted on the shaft it comes with from the factory. The really strange thing is I came to the forums today to make this same post.... I'd have to pick my H/T arming sword. If I am on a battle field assuming I have armor I want a 2handed polearm like a halberd, spear or my favorite, the billhook. In that case I'd take it as a backup with a buckler, or in the 13th century I'd take a heater shield.

Kind of along those lines, I'd take the CS Bushman and then have the ability to either have a knife or fix it to a pole and have a spear.

Pole Arm (probably the best fighting weapon) vs. the Mongol Horde...haha, your really in "niche" territory with that, as well as a generally crappy circumstance. But, yeah, something versatile, portable, concealable is the ticket because you'll probably be seeking a low profile in any event, though with the attachment ability of the Bushman or hawk head onto a pole you have more substantial fighting possibilities.

I'd take full size sword, probably my Argentine M1895 or simialr size sabre, maybe even the French 1822. No matter what time I get sent to, a knife is easy to come by. Swords of good reliable steel less so.

I'm tempted to say: The sword I want to be buried with (Witham Viking) for some realistic reasons. But for fun: CS Cutlass Machete!

Swords of good reliable steel less so. This is an interesting point of view. If one went back around 3 thousand years, a full sized sword would be invaluable. Go back over 6 thousand years and your sword would be an object of worship.

And even only 300 years back they can worship the plastic grip of my machete!

Honestly, any foreknowledge I take back to the past would be the best "weapon" I might choose. It wouldn't ultimately matter because any successful trip to the past will have broken causality, conservation of matter/energy, and a few other fundamental constants of the universe. #IPoopOnYourParty
Edit: I'd probably also take my Albion Doge.

Would take Windlass Atlantean and set a new trend for historical pieces

If it's ANY time, then most times picked will either be in the lifeless land of precambrian Earth or some epoch with dog size spiders or huge dinosaurs looking to get revenge for my fried chicken addiction. So that would strongly mitigate toward my 6' short spear. It's counterbalanced, easy to tote and very rugged. You can use it for hunting as well as fighting.
If we're talking about historical times, for the best *weapon,* I'd go with the Dane axe. It's terrifying.

A nice fixed-blade knife. I don't know where I'll end up but in terms of legality, this is the best weapon for concealment + legality + power.
