Got a Hanwei Basket Hilt Broadsword. A bit blade heavy, but the fit and finish on mine was superb. Love it. Oh I am so jealous! I really would love a good basket hilt sword. Is the blade heavyness an issue? Do you think you could fight with it for a while if you had to?

Lookin' good, V. I love that fine-meshed mail. If that's what I think it is--and it's welded--I bet that would stop an arrow in REAL LIFE. Awesome stuff! It is welded yes. Ringmesh. I think they use the same stuff as shark armor under water so... I'm super jealous of your dunedain ranger!

Forgive the cheap butted mail It's and old gift. One day I wish to complete a 13th century knight but,as of now this is what I have. Mens joggers for cheap hosen, the warriors gambeson from Epic Armory , get dressed for battle 13th century soldier boots and the Hanwei tinker arming sword. No forgiveness necessary! The kit looks great! Haha thanks! And it's nice to see other people recommending Lord of Battles riveted mail. I want to add that to my collection to start working towards my 13th century goal

I gotta say the more I learn about the various orders and crusades I'm really loving my type 12 blade and other 13th century designs. I'm looking into getting a heater shield from shields plus I do love XII (well for me it is XIIa as I like the war swords more than arming)... but the XIIa is my favorite euro typology. Japanese it’d be late Kamakura. I've never handled a war sword but they seem like a lot of fun. Are they "heavy?"

I would have to say crusader/medieval era, as it was during these times nations were in the process of being forged, and ancient Rome, as it held sway over the greatest empire ever, tho greatest doesn't necessarily mean best I gotta say the more I learn about the various orders and crusades I'm really loving my type 12 blade and other 13th century designs. Good points. But wouldn't a mace or hammer be more effective against armor? So why not carry that for dealing with armored opponents in the later centuries like 14-16th. We know that even common soldiers had a decent amount of armor in that time period.

Swords are often seen being used in unarmored situations. However I feel realistically most fights involved some level of protection/armor. As battle fields, sieges and skirmishes would be way more popular than duels or self defense. But swords are very common side arms on battlefields where in fact decent amounts of armor would be worn. So discuss! I want to see your opinions on why this may have been, or tell me I'm wrong

Scholagladiatoria, Skallagrim and the Metatron for me! Shadiversity is in the grey area of honorable mention or another favorite because of his realistic fantasy videos.

I've played 5th edition D&D and AD&D. I dabbled in some Savage Worlds games. I played in Star Wars, WW2 and Fallout savage world games. In AD&D my first character was a human fighter named Koop Inglehoffer. Yes he's named after mustards I found in the grocery store I played mostly fighter types in my Dad's AD&D games. My favorite was a moon elf cavalier named Sir Terakas Taranth. He eventually became a vampire. His horse had magic horse shoes that allowed it to run not touching the ground. Recently I just retired my paladin Sir Trystan Merrick,Sword of the Morning in the 5E D&D module Storm Kings Thunder. He was a paladin of Lathander and had a magic longsword named Dawn which glowed with a magic white fire. Oh and he retired with a Griffon who I named after a dead comrade NPC from the game. I really want to play as a ranger in a game because I feel like that class fits me best IRL but I always end up a fighting type character. I would absolutely love to get into LARP but there are no good ones near me ):

Have you looked at the Ranger's Apprentice books? The rangers in them carry a bow, a seax and a throwing knife. As far as longswords, or sword and shield goes I think it would depend on how much serious fighting you would be looking at. You'd stop worrying about the weight and bulk when it saves your life. This true. I was just thinking in everyday life the ranger may just be armed with smaller weapons but when he/she knows there's a good chance of fighting they'd arm up. And no I haven't read them but I intend to after I finish the powder mage trilogy.

LotR Rangers have to fight too, Orks etc., and not only as archers. Gambeson might help in cold nights too. Two handed longswords might not be the best in the woods. Yea in the movies Aragorn does this but it's a movie. I feel a longsword would be to annoying in the wilderness or mountainous terrain. I still think a short sword or large knife would be the best melee weapon. Maybe a handaxe. It would be different though if they knew for a fact they were going to fight. Perhaps an ambush or attacking an outpost etc. I'd imagine polearms and shields would be common. And ofcourse missile weapons.

One of the things that sets "Rangers" apart from normal fighters is their ability to blend in and feel comfortable in a natural environment. They can live off the land not just use their environment for camouflage or stealthy attacks. If you didn't need to carry more than weapons, cloak/blanket, water carrier, a boiler/pot and a few small items like a sharpening stone and flint and steel, you can travel greater distance in a short amount of time. For some comprehensive thoughts on this and particular gear you might want to check out this site: middleearthrangers.org/forum/There is also a Wiki: www.middleearthrangers.org/wiki//index.php?title=Main_PageI actually have an account and sometimes post there too I had this same discussion and most of them said no weapons, a bow or just a knife. They seem to like the bushcrafting, camping and ranger "activities" more. But nothing against that I think it's as awesome as swords. Just thought I'd ask some weapon nerds their opinions

Assuming they are going to be travelling a lot with no equipment train in a forest environment, I would think a good bow with a small spear or large knife as backup and that's about it. There's not much room for anything else. They might have a wicker backpack of some kind, but much of that space would need to be given over to blankets and camp material. Really I suspect they'd need some mules at least ;-) Good point. In many games the heroes just go out with armor and weapons to defeat the bad guys when in reality you'd probably need stuff to carry stuff. Mules, wagons or pack horses and the like. Or even servants of some kind. Maybe rangers could have their own type of "squires."
