If you have not seen this new TV show, it's time you did. You can watch full episodes here: www.spike.com/full-episode/apache-vs-gladiator/31444The first one is the Apache vs. Gladiator. Not exactly 100% accurate, but very enjoyable and fun. Just seeing the final conflict of an Apache fighting a Gladiator in the American Southwest makes this a great show - its like a Star Trek alternate reality episode or something. I laughed my ass off. ;D I figured I'd start a thread for it being that they will soon do Knights, Samauri, Zulu, and all other sorts of combinations. Discuss it here!

Where's the "turned it off 15 minutes in" option?

I enjoyed it... I put it on par with 'Fight Science'... it's certainly not difinitive or 100% spot on... but there is some useful information to be had (at least in the first show) and I enjoyed it. And come on... let all be honest about it... ALL of us have had these sort of conversations at on time or another... "Who would win between a ninja and a pirate? A Mongol and a Viking? A knight and a Samurai?" ;D

I just think it's hilarious entertainment value...I mean, there is this Apache walking in the woods, and BOOM....out pops a gladiator in full combat array screaming and running at him with dramatic music and all...oh God, that is funny. I busted my gut laughing so hard. I can't wait to see a ninja fight a pirate or some such combination. My wife will probably have to carry me to the ER from laughter.

I agree... ...the end fight scene is PURE silly... the apache is wandering the wilderness, likely hunting... and this giant Arnold sized gladiator comes up 'over the grassy knoll' and goes "Aarrrrrrrrrrgghhhh!!!" I laughed my ass off as well.

The thing that killed me were how pissed of the indian guys were getting... They yelled and were so sure that apache were the best knife fighters.... I liked how they showed The apache killing old american soldiers.... Key point in history if the Apache were so amazing and great they would not have been forced onto small reservations by the white man they killed so easy with there superior combat..... "Appache carry as many knives and hatchets as it would take to kill you"..... Yeah right.... Also both of those guys have black belts in Kali and other kife arts, so most of the combat forms they were using were not Apache... And when the Snake guy tried to talk crap to the Ice Man it was very funny... you could tell that he wanted now part of Chuck with those spike gloves on The show is silly, but just like fight science the martial artists want to know just what they can do... there is a difference in theory and actually doing somthing... My gripe is that they wont have a good sword and swordsmen for the samurai part.... In fight science the samurai part sucked because Obata Sensei did not want to cut the gel dummy. He did not want to put shinkendo in a killing light.... But I would love to see him cut this new dummy they have that has organs and even bones! A Friend at Stanford does forensic science and he told me the dummies they use come within 12% of actual LIVE humans.... WILD!

I seen that commerical 50 times...
Sally is hot and naughty...is she not? ;D
Back to the outcome...They feed it into a computer simulator and run the scenario 1,000 times based on raw data (probably rating the weapons and styles a numeric value then add a random factor). In these 1,000 bouts, the Apache won 667 times and the remainder went to the Gladiator.
The final fight is based on the overall outcome - so in the portrayal, the Apache won as well. He would not have won if the gladiator would have keep pommeling his face with the cestus instead of hitting him a couple times then standing like he was gonna cheer a crowd. It was just silly....funniest semprini I have seen in years...

I really liked seeing the effects of the weapons, but thought their methos of determining the winner was a complete farce. once again it will come down to the skill of the fighter and the circumstances of the fight. I too was dissapointed in the hot headedness of the indian guys.

I watched the show because my wife had recorded for me and I didn't want to be rude. However I found it interesting albeit a bit silly at times, I could live without all the smack talk but then that's the world today eh? I figured the Apache would win strictly because he had the bow and arrow, the gladiator wouldn't get close enough to kill him. Hand to hand the gladiator would have done him. The portrayal was just a cartoon act. I'll probably watch the next one.

In these 1,000 bouts, the Apache won 667 times and the remainder went to the Gladiator. I saw a simulation much like that one where they fed data on Muhammad Ali and Rocky Marciano; remember this took place in 1967 so the results COULD be biased. Anyhow, it was billed The Superfight and according to the 'computer' (NCR 315- with 20k of total memory lol), using punch by punch details of each boxer's record during their prime; strengths and weaknesses too. The funny part was, Marciano was still alive and in relatively good health so they filmed the two of them in a mock boxing match. According to the computer, Marciano wins by KO in round 13. This was the inspiration for the last Rocky movie. Back on topic- I've seen bits of some episodes; looks interesting but the time it comes on conflicts with another show I usually watch at that time. It is pretty cool though. IMHO, the Knight would beat anyone on horseback!!! Anyone! In truth, I agree with others that it is the individual that wins a given fight, not the fighting style they are representing, although I am sure its a big help. Apache vs Gladiator in a forest setting? Apache all the way; he's in his element. rickyarias' comment re: the Apache- "Key point in history if the Apache were so amazing and great they would not have been forced onto small reservations by the white man they killed so easy with there superior combat" - firstly, they made a mistake and trusted those dirty, swindling white men with their firewater and sweet talk, to put it bluntly. They expected to be dealt with fairly and honestly but we know how all that turned out, right? Right. Ever bring a knife to a gunfight? That was all they had; they did what they could. Why do you think the gov't set up those reservations? Guilt. They knew they stole their lands- of course, if you've ever been to a reservation you'll see it is no favor to live there... All that to say that it doesn't take away from their fighting skill; they were no match for the guns the Europeans brought (I call them Euros because they weren't born here, they just stole it). No one was. If they fought on 'equal' terms, I have no doubt we'd all be citizens of the Commonwealth. My $0.02.

I too was dissapointed in the hot headedness of the indian guys. I don't think thats fair, Tom. The guys for the Gladiator side were acting like epic douchebag tools as well... VERY cocky and snide.

You'll note everybody in the apache bits had a gun. Apaches certainly took guns if they felt they could use them, too. The Apache guys themselves said they don't believe in fair. I don't know, I wasn't part of it so I can't say how it all played out. I will say that if, as the Apaches claimed, they had no concept of "ownership," then I'd say that there was nothing "stolen" from them at all. At any rate...bows were better weapons than guns were back then, anyway, so that the settlers had guns is no great advantage. After all, the "amazing stealth tactics" of these Apache folk would have rendered guns useless anyway, right? Bias and prejudice come from both sides. The whole concept, nevermind execution, of the show is just dumb, but it's what the masses want so I guess we get it whether we like it or not, eh? The above was a response to The Ebon Paladin, in case that got missed by Shadowhowler's post getting in before mine. The following is in response to Shadowhowler. Yeah, the "gladiator" guys did pretty much "start it" but the Apaches could have been better and not gotten sucked in. The old guy tried, but I feel like toward the end he was forcing himself; almost seemed like the producers were encouraging him to talk it up for the sake of entertainment value. The young guy, though, was being just as immature and stupid as the other guys. The lack of post-"fight" interviews was another thing that disappointed me. I'd have liked to hear each sides opinions on the "results" and such.

LOL @ postfight interviews
Point taken @ random, however- if a person does not realize they've been wronged, does that make it 'not wrong'?
I guess that's my only point with that. I'll see about watching an episode in its entirety.

i personally enjoyed it and at hand to hand again it would come down to the actual skill of the opponents (speed most importantly i think)
and as to the "trash talking" remember what channel its on and who their target audience is this is the same channel as UFC
