I saw the Apache vs Gladiator one; a few observations:
I felt that the Apaches represented, esp. the long haired one, were more warrior-like. Or maybe it was because they were actual Apaches trained in their historical techniques- they just seemed more real, I guess. Both sides did their fair share of trash talking.
On MMA: you either love it or you don't; and for those of us who love it, less still understand it. I have nothing but the utmost respect for these modern day gladiators, and in some cases, a little awe.
Nothing but derision for Kimbo Slice; anyone can beat up homeless people and make it look good- he can throw a punch and has some rudimentary pugilist skills but as we all saw, when he came up against a trained fighter, it didn't go well. I agree with Sean, he only served to bring the sport down.

this is my new favorite comedy sitcom Thats a pretty good way to look at it... my wife were watching it earlier, giving it the 'Myster Science Theater 3000' treatment.

The Apache lost by attrition, not tactics or weaponry.
It took gobs of US Army types (and many years) to get them to the res.
Nothing much said in the history books about the Pima, Maricopa, and Navajo, who ate Apache for breakfast.

I agree. This show is silliness, therefore good entertainment.
I'd like to see better matchups, though. Bronze Age weaponry against Hollywierd modern steel? How about the Katana against Plate? A Bastage sword against lacquered leather?
I'd also like to see how that guy's sim works. From what I've seen on the show, it pretty much ignores agility, relying on measurements recorded from their strain gauges and accelerometers.
It was pretty cool, though, seeing that slice of skull taken by the naginata. I'd personally rather face the Viking's axe....

I knew you were all right- MST3K is a family favorite; erstwhile bombfests were made funny by the running commentary, love the show!

Assume each fighter is fifth level with full hit points... In all honesty, I can't take this show seriously. The 'special' weapon for the samurai was a joke...sure, you get one good hit in, but a 15 pound club could be easily stopped by a stop-cut, like one would use against a baseball bat, or more to period, a large axe. And the spear for a ranged weapon? Really? I was under the impression that like most medieval peoples vikings were quite well versed in the use of the bow and arrow. Though I could be mistaken, most of my knowledge is a bit further foward in time. Though the fight at the end had me rolling. I'd love to see the story behind it. "One day there was a samurai walking in the woods and he happened to find a viking.."

You see the issue though is that the indians were weakened by all the horribly dirty tactics the white fellas were using, like blankets that gave them small pox and ruining their drinking water and then when all of this had occurred the white fella would sweep down on them in ridiculous numbers and kill them all.

What I found to be silly was that the katana was compeating with the axe , and the naginata with the Viking sword... HUH?
Why not sword on sword?
Club on Axe... or maybe naginata or nagamaki on axe....
And it is silly that everything is depending on power of strikes to give the advantage... what about speed , timing and dexterity ... these are the most important tools in battle.... The Viking axe or the Samurai club will neither do anygood if they are cut down by a quick sword blow while winding up to swing one of those slow heavy things....
I also thing the viking throwing axe should have made an appearance....
I enjoy the show for entertainment , but the data is not scientific, its just LARP.

It was kind of entertaining but your right why not sword against sword, axe against club thing, bow against bow. What did bother me a bit was why wasnt the viking shield used as a defensive weapon to stop the yumi arrows. I did kind of grin when the katana couldnt cut the mail, all in all it was cool to see the damage those weapons could do. After the samurai won how come the Apache didnt come back out, they were still in the woods.

522 to 478, eh? Close enough to 50/50 for me. That they could declare a definite winner through such a meager point span only stands to prove that the show simply has no idea. Nevertheless...I was equally unimpressed by both sides. I've seen members here handle swords better (their first times, mind) than the "experts" they had this time. Hell, the "viking" guy nearly took off his own leg with that long axe. Oh well, entertainment for the masses.

That naginata cut was eye wateringly beautiful though

I suppose the cuts themselves were decent enough, but I wonder if that's where he was aiming.

[glow=green,2,300]THIS.[/glow] I was laughing threw most of it... but the main thing I was confused by was the weapon match-ups. I would have thought You would Match Katana to Longsword. Also, they tested the Katana vs ChainMail, but didn't test the longsword vs Samurai Armour. Why not? Also, for Close range weapons I would have liked to have seen something like Wakizashi vs Hand Axe or Scramasax. For Medium weapons, why not the Naginata vs the Spear or Large Axe? I guess you could match the Sheild and that stupid huge club thing for special weapons... I thought it was a Tetsubo when I first saw it, but apparently it's a Kanabô, so what do I know? Basicly... I thought the matchs ups were to odd and useless to provide any worth while data... so the end result is meaningless. Although, I do agree with the end result... just not how they got there. I feel Vikings and Samurai were as similar as there are different, which makes them an interesting comparasion. Anyway... like Random said... I have seen members here handle their weapons with greater skill then the stunt guy with the Katana did. It looked like he just POWERED threw his cuts. I do wonder what sword he used... The display of Japaness archery (Kyûdô) was nice tho... I don't think the Samurai get enough recognition as archers... everyone things of the Katana when they think of the Samurai... when in truth, most true battles in Samurai history were not settled with sword as the primary weapon at all.

I watched the viking vs. samurai one.
I enjoyed it for the most part. Obviously its a computer simulation, so it can't possibly take into account all the different factors. I thought they should have discussed speed more than just power of the weapons, especially the samurai club. That thing is only good for one swing.
They had to fit it into a 40 min episode, so they couldn't possibly put together all combinations of weapons.
The part I enjoyed the most was seeing the effects of the weapons on the targets. The spear going through an 8inch thick log and protrude 3 inches out the back was pretty impressive.

I am wondering what that wood was. I can promise you unless it was a dried soft wood or some sort of formed presswod that there is no way that Hanwei spear he was using would get through it travelling at 22mph. It was not a cured hardwood target at any rate. Still impressive to watch, but I doubt that it would penetrate through the the whole 8" traveling at two or three times that velocity into a good oak or maple.
