Ahhh, but they are designed to be sharpend..... Unless DSA has completely rewritten their mission...no they aren't. Last I checked, DSA's are intended, and built, for reenactment, and thus are to be and to remain a safe, blunt piece of steel, in a sword-like shape. Sure, you can sharpen one. You can put an edge on any piece of solid steel. This doesn't mean it'll be good. ![;)](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Ah, yes... I have seen the horror of an angered tree. Not pretty. Luckily steel barrels are smaller, though faster...nevertheless, a solid steel rod'll send 'em away! Even one with a sharpened edge, like a DSA sword. ![:-X](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/lipssealed.png) Sorry though www.darksword-armory.com/bladesmiths.htmlThe precept of SBG and vendors regarding DarkSword has become a premier addition to the economy class. Sharp or blunt, the message is offered up time and again by this very forum. For better or for worse, the offering as handling and sharps is just as viable for any purpose. Cheers Hotspur; I don't think anyone can believe they don't want sharps when most buying via this specific forum is promoting use as sharps

Ok, this is getting long in the tooth..... vyapada, you quote under your avatar is similar to what minamoto mushai was doing in his later years, just he use two sticks to defeat his foes... what I am referring to the 55gal drums is that in the historical context, the swords from Darksword fall into the range that have been found, and unlike the reenactment true blunts that are out there, the DSA's are just unsharpened battle ready swords, and yes you can get the sharpening option, however, I would like to do the edge myself so I can get the "apple seed" But for the poll here, it would come sharpened, But on that fatefull day, we who participated in this, woke up with our choices in our hands, looked to the left.......sheild wall.........looked to our right.......sheild wall..........then came the arrows and that was all she wrote for us!!!!! Thanks for the fight Odingaard!

In anycase, in that era, a lot of fights were still of the skirmish style anyways.

vyapada, sorry I didn't quite answer your question, my point on the 55gal drum test, is for the SBG sub $300 swords, (and I misunderstood the Albion test) is for the $$$$ a very good buy, the DSA is close to historical and hefty........And as to destructive testing, what other swords would stand up to that kind of abuse
Coldnalpalm.........read my quote.......we all are in the midle...not on one side or the other........caught in the midle...So the Calvary would mow us down!

I consider even their better swords marginal at best. But then again, I'm picky. Hell even the gen 2 lucerne and black prince which are WAY more historically accurate has major flaws in my view. Obviously, what you consider close is vastly different then mine. As for a destruction test...gen 2 maximilian sword? Although my view of the abuse test is more along the lines of if you want a sword that can do that, why not pay $10 bucks for a crowbar that'll do it better. And you should read your post again. You said ARCHERS...not calvary. Archers were a danger in this era true, but the calvary is the bigger threat of the battlefields of this era for infantry. And as I mentioned, a lot of fighting in this era was still very much small skirmishes more then armies moving on each other.

well I'd find that incredibly pointless. My goal in life isn't to kill anything living around me ![:P](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) . An admirable goal, to be sure. However, I didn't assume that the point of taking a good sword back with you was to go around killing and plundering Viking style. I assumed it would be so that you could defend yourself should the need arise. You could certainly defend yourself well back in 1100AD with a gun and ammo. As I said before, a man walking alone with nothing but a sword and no knowledge of the language or territoy will draw plenty of unwanted attention. I'd rather appear as an insane foreigner than an insane foreigner armed with a sword.

I get what you (and some others) are saying about it being better to not have ANY sword at all... however that sort of twists the intent of this thread. Really, the whole (you awaken in 1100 AD, what sword do you want?) metaphor is just a fun way of asking, in the sub $300 sword market, which sword would you trust your life to if you had to? IE: with what you know about the swords and their manufacturers, which weapon would you most want at your side should you NEED it for the purpass swords were made... fighting? Yessh. ![:P](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

I would want a good combat dagger. Absolutely lethal and easy to conceal. Draw little attention to yourself and if you have some ruffian come up and harrass you...SURPRISE!

If my choices are restricted to current sub-$300 swords, I'd rather go without. ![:D](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

Say you die and discover you are an immortal, Al la "Highlander"... and you NEED a sword to defend your life... but for some inexplicable magic reason you MUST chose a sub $300 sword... what do YOU chose? ![:P](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

Immortal? Then I probably wouldn't need weapons. Unless Highlander has some twisted definition of immortality? ![???](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) Either way, I'd rather try my luck at picking up whatever the first guy swings at me. ![;)](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

Immortal? Hmm... so long as nobody knows to take my head I guess I wouldn't really need a sword to stay alive although I might need one to keep my belongings. lol. I'd still go with a Hanwei Katana - PPK if sub $300, one of the nicer L6/bainite ones if above $300. Marc I'd go with a Howard Clark bainite but that's not listed. lol

In 'Highlander', your immortal UNLESS your head becomes seperated from your body... and other immortals LOVE to chop off immortal heads because it makes them more powerfull, and once there is only one immortal left, that one remaining supposedly gains a buttload of power. So you NEED a sword, because other immortals will be coming at you with one.

Kind of like being an Elf - You're immortal as long as someone doesn't kill you or die by some other means.

Kinda sorta, Jim. Except the ONLY way to kill an immortal is by beheading.
Of course, if someone would rather die than use a sub $300 sword, then they are entitled to that choice.
Me, I'm using the KC or hell a Deepeeka even iffin it's all I got. I may die but I'll go swingin and stickin.

I give up.
