While my bucker pairs woth my saber just fine, a good parrying dagger would be much more comfortable to carry

But for home defense, how close do you want to be?

A long spear/polearm wouldn't be bad if you had a long blade on your belt, but the key would be to practice on a SHORT transition in dropping the polearm (assuming bad guy gets past weapon head and you can't choke up anymore) and grabbing that blade on that belt.

But for home defense, how close do you want to be? Its more about if they close in. You might be dealing with an agile fellow with a spring in his heel. A lot of attacks tend to end up in close quarters or on the ground, and if that happens, a dagger is my choice A long spear/polearm wouldn't be bad if you had a long blade on your belt, but the key would be to practice on a SHORT transition in dropping the polearm (assuming bad guy gets past weapon head and you can't choke up anymore) and grabbing that blade on that belt. If I read this before writing my post, I could have just said I agree with this. Oh well, I agree with this lol

The weakness of the long spear/polearm in a hallway is the wall behind you. All the speed, reach, power, control is negated once you can no longer quickly choke up at will and the enemy gets behind the weapons head. Against a man with a large shield swinging a short sword you REALLY would want to be able to back up along with choking up. If he gets past that pole head then you can grab your long blade on your belt and skirmish with him using his own shield for your defense.

If talking modern day home invaders who intend to do harm I think they are far more likely to have a machete/dagger/knife in one hand or be carrying an axe rather than a shield? Or if they are breaking through your window to get you it would probably be a hammer/tire iron of some sort.

Reach is key, when few battle many. Don't need fatal blows, just a few solid cuts, to slow them down and make them think a bit.

There are many variables the defender can’t control. Number of attackers, their level of motivation, their armament, their weapons, to name a few. A spear is great in the right conditions, but it only takes one moment of distraction and it becomes a burden in confined spaces. You might not expect them to come at you the way they choose to come. They might rush in just when you open that door to the hallway, carrying the spear point somewhat offline to reach the doorknob, for example. One might catch the point in the belly, the next rushes past. Another might throw stuff at you. You might just get real unlucky, who knows. I think the cutlass/shield combo works well regarding a variety of scenarios.
And yeah, I would prefer the 9mm to get to the shotty, of course.

Primarily the gun part haha. But my rotella and light saber are my go to if I had to melee battle

No doubt you are right when talking garden variety thieves, particularly those down on their luck, and one would assume they would also have a gun...but then so do I. Organized groups storming residences would probably be in body armor and with firearms, and they would be goal oriented (wanting something specific from me). I think only militarized forces would wield a shield, and it would be some form of ballistic type (think SWAT).

Too bad, wouldn't that be cool Trap?

A long blade in one hand, shield in the other...hard to beat combo and probably the top for general home defense. Only thing better would be (I think) a FULL suit of armor and two hand short sword. Now, just try, half asleep, getting that suit on when you hear a crashing at the front door.

Not that that allays my fighting spirit...

Oh yea hahahhahhahhhahaha I didn't even notice that 😂 yea, my Spanish 1985 is my ideal duelling sword. So if someone had a bat or machete, I would feel safe going rotella and saber. Hilariously safe, in fact But I also like an arming sword. A good thrusting arming sword or Celtic leaf blade. You would be the master of the hallway going Roman style tactics

I’ve slept in soft armour, gambeson, mail, 14 ga. bracers, skirt, more than once during our blackouts.

You would be the master of the hallway going Roman style tactics I thought leaf blades would be more of a hacking weapon compared to spatha, gladius and NAUE or Type G swords which would be more suitable for slicing and stabbing? Wouldn't the swings with either xiphos or leaf blade require you more room?
