This is why, every morning, I strap a claymore mine to my chest (if only I could remember which way to face it). I subscribe to the "out crazy" philosophy of home defense. Anyone planning to assault me (my family, or friends) needs to be prepared to see all of my internal organs turn into the proverbial "fine red mist" as they fly away from me in some direction. The deterrent value may be lost if your assailant doesn't know what a claymore is.

The worst part with the last one no one has come up with a cure yet.

To answer the OP question, that depends. Javelins seem to be very effective.

Ah. Good point. I suppose pole-arms are great for home defense if your house looks like this:

Ah. Good point. I suppose pole-arms are great for home defense if your house looks like this: The Swiss Guard also employ Sig P220s, Sig 550/552 series rifles, Glocks, and HK MP7s. Those are the Guardsmen you see less of, by design.

Not very practical I'd say, too unwieldy.
Sans firearms, I'd say something like the cold steel gladius machete, a wakitachi, or long bladed seax would be better. Maybe even a rapier? You never hear of those being used, but practicing a lunge could be pretty fast and decisive.
Not a big fan of bats or impact weapons in the home- again, you need space to swing. How big are your hallways?
Any chance for tazers or pepperspray etc?
Also, alarms and big barky bitey dogs. This will solve like 90 percent of your issues.

If you come at any home invader with any kind of long bladed weapon most are more likely to flee than risk trying to fight you and getting killed anyways. But as mentioned above pepperspray is by far one of the most effective things you can use to instantly end an encounter with long reach in the spray that will immediately incapacitate someone. Then you can follow up to stab them through the chest or cut off the head with the weapon of your choice, kidding on that last part of course lol.

Nudity amplifies the affect of any blades weapon as well. I suggest welding any of the above as nude as possible.
Psychological warfare baby.
Maybe scream "REMEMBER WILLIAM WALLACE!" as you charge into battle. The fights over before it begins.
Probably the axe murderer ends up calling the police to protect him from you.

Narrow corridors and chokepoints...next best thing to shotgun.

That would sound more like a Bronze Age or Bronze Weapon thing.

A short spear might be decent indoors, as you can choke up on it if need be. If you have a knife on your belt, you have a back up if it goes to wrestling
If you are on your lawn, and they have melee stuff like bat's and knives, you might have an edge over them. But if they got a gun, you would have to be a madman to bother

Narrow corridors and chokepoints...next best thing to shotgun. That's more true that you realize. I did some narrow space sparring in Germany last month (the video is up on the training forum) and l learned that a doorframe is a very effective shield- it limits the offensive options of your opponent and provides a fairly decent place to launch an attack from. R.E. any medieval castle interior design from Europe or Japan will show you they also knew of the effectiveness of choke points and fall back positions.

I most definitely recommend a knife back up.

Thanks for advertising your recent video and I just took a look and read your comments. I have to admit it awakens my eyes when I watch a video of myself. As for doorways and narrow halls I’ve stated many times that is my choice to take a stand. And I’ll throw in another factor that I failed see mentioned, perhaps I just missed it, is that in the event of invasion or robbery I’ll probably have more than one assailant to contend with. A doorway will give me a narrow front and help to prevent an envelopment and/or a secondary attack from the flank by another adversary. I am also a strong advocate of a shield. In my house a shield w/short weapon is best due to space. At present a shield with a machete or kukri appears to be the best choice although I can think of more preferred weapons if the restraints present for me did not exist.

Yes, absolutely a door way or narrow hall favors the defender in a multiple assailant situation. It's barely possible for one person to effectively attack, let alone two side-by-side. Any more that that, and the assailants will have to step over the dead bodies of the guys in front of them if the want to see any action for themselves.
Oddly though, a shield (or in my case the buckler) performed less than expected. I'll have to examine the videos and think about it for a bit, but my impression was that it hindered attack more than it promoted defense. Jury is still out on that one. Could also be due to the fact that using a shield is a new skill for me and I need more training to use it properly.

The prime reason I prefer a shield is that machetes nor kukris have guards leaving the hand is exposed. I can see where a shield or a buckler, I’m torn between the two, can a hindrance.
