indridscold , g2knee , @loe , legault , and anyone else that decides to try one of these newer models... Please let us know what you think! And if possible, post a quick summary on this thread: sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/62341/deepeeka-gems I'm trying to compile a list of Deepeeka swords that exceed their price points, are generally held in positive regard, and that we can recommend to either beginners or those on a budget. Of course, the more feedback, the better Thanks! Jash

Sure. Good idea. I ordered mine unsharpened, so should be here pretty quickly.

Looks like the new Viking swords have no distal taper at all. Or maybe .1 mm to .3 mm at most. If this is true it will handle like a bar of iron. The last Deepeeka sword I got from KOA was almost a full pound heavier than it said on the website. Almost 4 pounds. With no distal taper. They look good, but have been disappointing as far as a decent weapon. And the grip is usually too long.

That's why I haven't been interested in any of the Viking swords. Whenever a new one pops up, I go to the specs and see something like "4.7 - 4.8 mm" and I promptly close the browser tab. Shame, as the quality of the fittings has really improved quite a lot.

Vikings in general don't turn me on. That's not to say that some of these $150 "new and improved" swords from Deepeeka aren't worth a look.
I don't like Viking swords in general. But one of those had significant distal taper. Was it one of the Gunthers?
I can't remember. It's the weekend. I'm off work. Happy to report that I'm drinking heavily, trying to get my girl to remember that I used to be young. I know it won't work. But I do remember that one of those Deepeeka "new & improved" Vikings caught my eye. One of them had distal taper that surprised me.
Can't remember if it was on Deepeeka's site or KoA's. I thought it was Viking.

I just looked through the new Deepeeka's on KoA and didn't see any with any degree of distal taper.

Then I'm mistaken. Apologies all around.
When I sober up tomorrow, I'll double check. And confirm what Alien already knows.

It was the Swedish Viking Sword.
4.4mm to 3.8mm. It was the only one that had (significant??) distal taper. If one wants to call that significant? All the others were 3mm to 1mm taper. But what can one expect for $150 bucks? I still think some of these are worth a look.
So I'm doing another shot of bourbon. My wife is hoping I don't pick up my new Balaur Arms 15th Century Arming and proceed to mutilate some of the walls. She's smarter than I am.

I wouldn't really consider 0.6mm significant distal taper, honestly. I don't have any real experience with Viking-era swords, though.

Nor I.
But for $150? It might be somewhat significant at that ridiculous price point. Hobbit recreations are probably gonna cost more, but be made of stainless, and fare worse.
A Viking to me is a chopper. Not sure distal taper matters much in that type of blade. That being said, I was impressed this el cheapo junker had some distal taper.

Bro' Nath' brings sensibility to this thread. Now Stand Aside, Worthy Adversary!
lol
That's from the shouts we had going earlier. Rufus and Bro' Nath' had me laughing out loud. So loud my wife got worried.

It was GREAT stuff. You guys had me laughing so hard - I'm still laughing. I can't stop laughing. That was ART.
Well done.
I mean I'm literally still laughing. You guys have a great sense of humor. And I love to laugh. High compliment.

4.5mm to 3.4mm was what my Viking from them was supposed to have. It pretty much stayed at 4.5.

Sorry I can't say if distal taper means much of anything in a Viking. I don't know. But to see a Viking offering at $150 (new) that offers some distal tapering? or reports some distal tapering?... I won't complain about that.
I feel assured in saying none of them is as good as the Balaur Arms Italian.
Unless one goes for a phaser.

Well, if we look at, for instance, the Albion Hersir, we see it tapers from 4.3 to 2.3 mm. I'd wager that's probably pretty representative of what a quality Viking-era sword should feature.

I've been eying those swords too, I was about to start a new thread asking about the Phillipe when I saw this. I haven't bought from deepeeka in the past because of some things I've heard about their sword quality, but some of these new ones definitely look like an improvement. If anyone purchases one of these I'd love to hear their analysis. Does anyone have recommendations for other budget-friendly Euro swords? I'm currently looking for either a type XIV or a decent viking sword but I'd love to hear any recommendations for best budget and mid-ranged swords.

The Balaur Arms 15th Century Italian Longsword is the best budget longsword I've found, and it just recently came back in stock. They probably won't be restocked after this, so if you don't have one and are interested, I'd try to get one ASAP.
The Hanwei Hand-and-a-Half Sword is an excellent sword for the price. I really enjoy mine, and the only reason I think the BA is slightly better is that the price is generally less expensive.
For some swords that have a good reputation that I haven't had a chance to try:
Hanwei's Cawood Sword has had a lot of good reviews. I'm currently waiting for them to come back in stock to pick one up.

Damn straight alientude. I ordered a Balaur Arms Italian Longsword and a Comte from Deepeeka which should both get here in the next week or two. Got them sharpened too so I cannot wait!
