As of Dec 10th, the World Health Organization has stated that nobody infected with the Omicron variant has been confirmed to have died from it. That is HUGE! Hell, even the flu kills more than zero. As of Dec 10th, the World Health Organization has stated that nobody infected with the Omicron variant has been confirmed to have died from it. That is HUGE! Hell, even the flu kills more than zero. Good news I hope. We need it. Good news I hope. We need it. Great news because Omicron should/will crowd out Delta, which crowded out standard COVID, My fear of COVID was always death and/or extreme illness that includes hospitalization (often with ventilation). If COVID morphs (bugs generally get weaker rather than stronger) into some kind of seasonal deal like colds & flu, that is still light years better, though I still don't like getting a bad cold or flu (I'm a wussy who hates being sick ). Oh, semprini!!!!

Jeez, and just when I trumpeted the good news. Still, after such a long period of spreading just about everywhere on Earth, to have only a single death at this point is beyond amazing good news. Now watch as a massive cluster of fatalities hit the news right after I type these words.

I heard that on the news today. I should’ve kept my mouth shut.

My State Governor announced yesterday our first confirmed cases of the Omicron variant in my State. He is advising wearing double masks. That is, a KN-95 underneath and your own, properly fit, cloth mask over that.
We have an estimated 75% vaccination rate in the State. Hospitals expect to start being overwhelmed after the Holiday, according to out local news agency.

Here in Germany the infection rates are still high but decreasing for three weeks now. But we expect a fifth omicron wave after the holidays, omicron explodes in UK in the moment. Big booster campaign. Vaccine mandates for nurses and medical personnel, discussions about general mandates. No lockdown but restrictions. Masks in public transport and buildings. 84 % icu occupied, 25 % covid.

I saw on the news last night that we now have it. The government moved the 3rd shot date from unspecified other than 2022 to 14 Dec in light of the Omicron virus and it looks like a good decision. I got mine but figure it won’t fully kick in until about the year’s end.

First Omicron death reported in US, a NON vaccinated male in his 50s WITH underlying conditions. I had J&J shot early last May and am deciding if and when a boost is warranted. Severity of Omicron (to me, death & major hospitalization) is the ballgame, as Omicron is so hyper infectious that I assume all will eventually be exposed & infected.

Probably "some" protection from infection, as antibodies are pumped up for a few months, then a need for another booster. That ain't the game for me, as I only care about death and severe illness. More compromised folk may opt for every advantage they can get, so choices are good. I think there is a pill coming out for people to take if becoming very ill, but I don't believe it's available just yet.

Israel's health administration now recommends a 4th shot for people over 60 and medical staff. In 2 months probably common.

When the treatment pill is available it will change everything.

In the meantime I see it like bodybuilding. To build up your immune system against covid you need repetitions.

A single data point, but I just learned one of my cousins has tested positive for Covid. She is fully vaccinated with booster of Pfizer and already had Covid mid-summer last year. So, breakthrough cases are possible. We speculate Omicron variant, but do not have lab results to confirm.

Vaccination doesn't prevent from infection, it's not an energy shield. It makes your immune system better in fighting the virus, optimally so that you aren't contagious.

Omicron infection appears to protect against Covid delta variant and could displace it, South Africa study finds...www.cnbc.com/2021/12/28/covid-omicron-appears-to-protect-against-delta-could-displace-it-study.html?utm_content=Main&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Facebook&fbclid=IwAR0pOmXdriJS5ULbSPDrfhRAbibBB0aCY3VadJNFSrAYlmti4nPtrRnOkBo#Echobox=1640712014People infected with the heavily mutated omicron variant of Covid-19 may have increased immune protection against delta, a new study says. As a consequence, omicron could displace delta, according to the small study published by South African scientists this week. The findings could have significant implications for nations such as the United States where omicron infections are rapidly increasing but the delta variant, which has caused an increase in hospitalizations, is still widespread. “These results are consistent with Omicron displacing the Delta variant, since it can elicit immunity which neutralizes Delta making re-infection with Delta less likely,” the team of scientists, led by Khadija Khan at the Africa Health Research Institute, wrote in their findings. If omicron displaces delta and proves more mild than past variants, “the incidence of Covid-19 severe disease would be reduced and the infection may shift to become less disruptive to individuals and society,” according to the scientists’ findings.

Still needs to be peer reviewed, but a very promising study that kind of backs the trends we are seeing: SARS-CoV-2 spike T cell responses induced upon vaccination or infection remain robust against Omicron
"These results demonstrate that despite Omicron's extensive mutations and reduced susceptibility to neutralizing antibodies, the majority of T cell response, induced by vaccination or natural infection, cross-recognises the variant. Well-preserved T cell immunity to Omicron is likely to contribute to protection from severe COVID-19, supporting early clinical observations from South Africa."
So it looks like even though Omicron can evade antibodies, it's getting squashed immediately by T cells in both vaccinated and prior infected, which prevents it from becoming a bad case.

Just before Christmas our new COVID-19 cases had dropped to almost nothing. I had predicted a marked increase after the holidays as tigos are party animals as well as very social. But in my wildest imagination I did not predict the extinct. The x-axis of the graph indicates the week number and the y-axis the number of cases. We have a record number of new cases.

We have seen similar spikes locally. National Guard troops have been deployed to assist with non-critical medical issues and vaccinations. ALL of our counties are in "Condition Red" status. Our testing positivity rate is above 31%. Keep in mind my State's goal was to keep that figure under 1.5% back in mid-2020. Related news. For US citizens, you may request 4 free home test kits be mailed to you (one order per household) as per a new Federal Program: www.covidtests.gov/
