My state and others will have to wait for a booster of the Janssen vaccine but it has been approved Since the advice has been to not mix vaccines, I won't rush out for one of the others. Any who, one news article (Go Providence) lists the breakthrough infections are up to 36% of those vaccinated and then tested months later when symptoms appears. However, those being admitted in the hospital continue to be those who had not been vaccinated. ri-department-of-health-covid-19-data-rihealth.hub.arcgis.com/Cheers GC

Germany has in the moment the highest daily number of infections ever, but only 25 % of hospitalisations and deaths compared to last winter. In my region the hospitals nevertheless have problems with full icu units, the younger (unvaccinated) people there need ventilators for a longer time period. Most cases are unvaccinated people but we see some clusters in old age and nursing homes with vaccinated people, who had their shots a 3/4 year ago. Booster shots should help as data from Israel show. My 94 yo dad is getting his next week, I gonna speak with my doc soon.

The number of cases here has gone down dramatically. Proof of vaccination will be required shortly to enter many places. Our third shot is scheduled for 2022, but no specific date has been published.

That’s great news. However Pfizer having it and the pill’s availability in my country are two different stories. Got my fingers crossed though.

So, for my age group (under 65) and taking the J & J, protection against infection is 13%, but against death it's 73%.

"HEALTH AND SCIENCE WHO calls special meeting to discuss new Covid variant found in South Africa with ‘a large number of mutations'"-WHO is monitoring a new Covid variant, scheduling a special meeting Friday to discuss what it may mean for vaccines and treatments, officials said. -The variant, called B.1.1.529, has been detected in South Africa in small numbers. -South African scientists have detected 30 mutations to the spike protein, the part of the virus that binds to cells in the body, which could have implications for vaccine efficacy and transmissibility. www.cnbc.com/2021/11/25/who-calls-special-meeting-to-discuss-new-covid-variant-from-south-africa-with-large-number-of-mutations.html"Heavily mutated coronavirus variant puts scientists on alert"
Heavily mutated coronavirus variant puts scientists on alert Researchers in South Africa are racing to track the concerning rise of a new variant of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19. The variant harbours a large number of mutations found in other variants, including Delta, and it seems to be spreading quickly across South Africa. A top priority is to track the variant more closely as it spreads: it was first identified in Botswana this month and has turned up in travellers to Hong Kong from South Africa. Scientists are also trying to understand the variant’s properties, such as whether it can evade immune responses triggered by vaccines and whether it causes more or less severe disease than other variants do. “We’re flying at warp speed,” says Penny Moore, a virologist at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, whose lab is gauging the variant’s potential to dodge immunity from vaccines and previous infections. There are anecdotal reports of reinfections and cases in vaccinated individuals, but “at this stage it’s too early to tell anything,” Moore adds. www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-03552-w

Yes, air restrictions across the globe this morning. The US is still listing more than a thousand dead a day and numbers are up slightly since Halloween.
Rhode Island is still only a bit more than half fully vaccinated. The state is offering a substantial bonus to state workers to vaccinate. That shows how many simply don't want to. I'd be happy to see the state and fed give me a vac bounty. I got boosted a couple of weeks ago and do most of my medical visits as teleheath. Still managed two hospital imaging visits and my dentist the past couple of seasons. Other than that, 'deliver to my door please'.

COVID-19 still exists here but is less news worthy as it’s old hat and the sensationalism is gone. I am overdue for a dental visit. My time was rolling around when this mess hit the fan and I cancelled not to reschedule, yet. My sword buying has come to a halt due to the distances and the number of people involved needed to OK a delivery. I have increased my kukri collection though, classifying them as knives which the government doesn’t mess with. Although somebody along the way changed that classification to sword on two of my last three. It took effort but I was able to have it changed back. Now I understand there’s yet another COVID-19 variant out there thanks to Newport.

In Germany we have the highest rate of cases ever, esp. in the south and east parts, in my county hospital all icu are occupied. First icu patients are transported to hospitals in the less overflowed states. Unfortunately we lost ca. 30 % icu since last year, not enough nurses, many quit the job. Most hospitalisations are unvaccinated, but also older people whose vaccination was last spring. Highest rates are with children 5 - 14 yo, so probably the schools play a big role but no one wants to talk about homeschooling again.

Just checked and CR has no plans for Pfizer’s COVID-19 pill and boosters won’t be available until sometime in 2002. I had my shot in the spring so it’s probably running low now. It sounds to me like our government is dragging their feet. On a brighter note; we have 98 people in the ICU. The first time in 15 months it’s been below 100.

Rising of cases in the country seems to have stopped, but that will effect the hospital situation just in a few weeks. My county hospital has 24 icu, 20 with ventilator. All occupied, 10 with covid, 9 of them unvaccinated. 4 died this night. Hospital chief doc says to die from covid you must be unvaccinated or over 90.

So far it's looking like Omicron, while more transmissible, is giving people really mild symptoms and is clearly going to start taking over as the dominant strain. This could end up being the best news yet, as many have projected that the virus would mutate in this way and become endemic like a cold/flu.

As of Dec 10th, the World Health Organization has stated that nobody infected with the Omicron variant has been confirmed to have died from it. That is HUGE! Hell, even the flu kills more than zero.

Good news I hope. We need it. Great news because Omicron should/will crowd out Delta, which crowded out standard COVID, My fear of COVID was always death and/or extreme illness that includes hospitalization (often with ventilation). If COVID morphs (bugs generally get weaker rather than stronger) into some kind of seasonal deal like colds & flu, that is still light years better, though I still don't like getting a bad cold or flu (I'm a wussy who hates being sick ).
