We have seen similar spikes locally. National Guard troops have been deployed to assist with non-critical medical issues and vaccinations. ALL of our counties are in "Condition Red" status. Our testing positivity rate is above 31%. Keep in mind my State's goal was to keep that figure under 1.5% back in mid-2020. Related news. More or less the same here in Germany, just two weeks behind France or Italy. Rising cases due to Omicron. More cases of hospitalisations too but not in icu which are decreasing indeed. Also more sick notes in medical staff, could become a problem, but isn't yet. The harder lockdown measures from the fourth delta wave for the current rates are suspended in the moment because it looks like they're not needed with omicron.

It’s about the same here. Hospitalizations have about double from the previous week with most patients being unvaccinated. ICU cases are up but running proportionally lower than in the past. The government had predicted being hit by omicron and accelerated the vaccinations allowing me to get my booster in December instead of an unannounced time this year.

I learned today that one of my grandsons has COVID, but no further word. Hope he’s ok. If it’s one of the newer variants it will probably be mild. Keep us posted.

My three nephew's/nices' families had it all the last weeks, all boostered, so just symptoms of a cold or no symptoms. I, my brother and wife and my dad are still covirgins. We're carefully because my 95 yo dad shouldn't get it even when he has got his second booster shot already. Our county hospital officials state that the situation has changed extremely. Still many positive tested patients but they were hospitalized due to other diseases and accidentally tested positive. Very few severe covid cases. The bigger problem is positive tested staff in quarantine.

It’s about the same here. The peak of the last wave was more severe and has passed. The cases were less severe with fewer hospitalizations and deaths. The grandkids are in another country and the last I heard conditions there were improving. Our government has approved a fourth shot for my group and I’ll check it out next month.

Germany has its summer-wave. We assume that the rate is three times the official number because many people make tests at home and stay there without official quarantine. Also in hospitals most positive patients didn't know they have it and came with other problems. The interesting thing is that neither vaccinations nor infections seem to protect against an new infection with the latest omicrons. In my work some (boostered) coworkers have it the second time within a few weeks. The good thing is that they have none or very light symptoms and still can work in homeoffice. Hospitals have problems due to many staff people not being really ill but in quarantine. It looks like the whole thing becomes an endemic state. I'm still a covirgin (afaik) and plan to get a second booster right a few weeks before Oktoberfest ("Wiesnbooster" we call it). I know very few people who suffered severely and say they assume they'd have died without the vaccination, so it's still a risk to get it.

From what you say it appears the new wave and/or the current version of the virus does not require extreme concern. Here things are returning to normal except for inflation, which the news stated last night was at 10%, but I strongly suspect higher on some things such as food and gas, and the devaluation of our currency. COVID-19 is no longer in the news. I suspect to some extent that is due to the country’s health care computer system being hacked destroying much data and in general putting the entire country in a mess health wise. There is a malware program that would have prevented this but someone decided it wasn’t worth the expense as only 13 of thousands of computers were found to contain the program. I received my 4th booster as well as a flu shot as the latter is also here, but not in large numbers but the government is encouraging the vaccination.

Wednesday a week ago I was part of the great epidemologic experiment called Munich Oktoberfest 2022, running on til next Monday. Fortunately I'm still negative which is very positive. No restrictions on the Oktoberfest but mandatory masks in public transport. The number of registered infections in Munich is rising strongly and we know that the real number of cases is probably three times high, because many use self tests and stay at home if sick without any official registration. It looks like there is no overloading of the medical system with severe illness cases.
The so called "Wiesngrippe" = "Oktoberfest-flu" was always part of the show and it looks like it's not much more severe than ever. We have many guests from the US due to the strong $ so it would be interesting if there are any effects on the US situation.
Most of us Germans are vaccinated or got the virus more than one time or both, so it looks like we are really in the endemic condition now.
The actual rise of cases probably results in a better protection of the population over winter.

We have a family member visiting Berlin and is scheduled to return to Costa Rica next Friday. Here’s hoping that she doesn't bring the virus with her.
