This one is way underappreciated. It was an early sword and sorcery flick and holds up remarkably well now. The acting is excellent and the plot surprisingly sensible. I need to get my kid to watch it. I found "Ladyhawke"almost impossible to watch in contrast because the music just doesn't work anymore. Odd how that happens as times change.
I suppose "Highlander" should be on the lists, but then I'm not sure it qualifies as "cult" with so many successful spinoffs.
Oh god yeah.

It definitely qualifies as a cult movie. It did poorly in the box office, but was discovered once on video to be the amazing movie it is and a fervent fan base formed around it. It was the cult status that got the spin offs and sequels made. The people who owned it kept trying to recapture that initial cult following failing horribly most of the time. The TV series being the best of the attempts and most accepted by the fan base. Movie 2 however was so bad even the creators and owner's of Highlander say ignore it it is not canon and does not exist in the Highander universe.

After McCloud shows (what's her name) he is immortal and they spend the night together...the movie completely craps out...almost to the point that they should have ended it there and just rolled the credits. Mediocre movie with a GREAT concept (not to mention the evil Kurgan).

Actually the reason I was hesitating about putting Highlander on the cult list is because it was too slick and mainstream. It's imperfect, but not the kind of mess that makes for a cult film.

Your welcome to your opinion and for you it is perfectly valid. But you might realize that just bellow Rocky Horror Picture Show, Highlander is the 2nd most cited cult movie. Rocky Horror is the classic example of cult classic with insane fan base going completely over the top in appreciation of the film. With Highlander coming in as the more sedate version of a cult classic. Highlander is the movie that more people actually will say is their favorite cult classic because it appeals to a much larger audience base.

If you're talking about "Shin Godzilla" I've seen it, and it is indeed a great movie, provided you remember it is a Godzilla movie so, like a comic book movie, you have to provide a heaping pile of suspension of disbelief. Godzilla is CGI and there are a couple of times he looks really phony but mostly he's excellent. They kept him looking like you expect, he's immediately recognizable as the big G, but without having to fit a man into a suit they were able to make him less hokey over all.

BTW this thread got me thinking.
Is the era of the cult movie gone?
With movies in theaters becoming less and less of a thing people bother to do, more and more movies really don't see their full audience until video release. What made cult movies in the past was failure at box office and the slow cult following that developed in video. But now a lot of people just don't go see any movie in theaters, preferring to wait for it to be on demand or netflicks or some other way to see it at home.
These days, while some movies might fit the old model of cult films is it really the same? Or is it just the audience was not willing to pay to see it in theaters?
*edit to add, plus these days with the internet. Word spreads about a good movie pretty fast. What used to take months and even years to build up as a cult film fan base now happens in days or weeks. Not nearly as much of a cult vibe in my opinion.

How about cult movies you hate, Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes. You have to be drunk, high or out of your mind to watch this one.
