So I've seen a few videos on YouTube with practitioners performing these 'kata's' to a rather rowdy audience. (My sensei won't ever allow me to upload to YouTube what I have been taught). I have never seen or heard of this style except anywhere but the US. Does anybody know where it came from? I personally don't like the performance

This girls scream sounds worse than a horror movie and she would have chopped her ponytail off at 50 seconds if it was an actual shinken lol.

This does not look like sword fighting lol, and the first vids music reminds me of dbz, maybe she's trying to beat Freiza lol.

In the first video, at around the 0:20 mark, she cuts and kicks at the same time. The sword comes pretty close to her foot. Generally something you want to try to avoid when you're swinging a sword.

My experience in swordsmanship comes from pulling fron different non Japanese two handed saber type manuals re applying it and sparring with my friend who does stick fighting (kali I think), so I can't say for sure, but I see over extensions, not closing in guards, almost cutting themselves, tense shoulders, and a bunch of other stuff that has gotten me whacked with a stick. Also I still can't get over how DBZ esque it is, listen to them scream, they're powering up, they're over 9000!

Another funny thing is their stances are deeper than the Atlantic.

It's arbitrary theatrics designed to wow a crowd and or panel of judges that doesn't really have a frame of reference for what they are observing.

This looks very similar to the XMA stuff. Extreme martial Arts. There are also versions of this for the bo, kama, etc....It was probably some made up "traditional weapon" kata. The big Karate tournaments have divisions for this "XMA" and "Creative Weapons"

These belong in the XMA(Xtreme Martial Arts) category. Kind of like what modern Wu Shu is to Kung Fu, XMA is to (mostly) Japanese martial arts. Lots of spinning, twirling and jumping and flipping, not much actual martial art. I admire the level of athleticism that the contestants show, but am generally pretty appalled by the performances and don't watch them anymore.

Yep, all for show. No actual application present.

I agree, while it is very athletic at the end of the day the old way of any martial art was to remove unnecessary movement in favor of making the kill as quickly as possible. We gotta focus more on the martial and less on the art. To the untrained eye real swordsmanship can actually look pretty boring.

Hahaha, whitefeathers beat me to it. I do miss the "somebody posted while you were posting" function. If you are looking for a sword style that has some really dynamic movements but retains actual martial applications look up Gumdo. Whitefeathers does it and it's got some really impressive stuff to see, including some crazy-good cutters.

Gumdo is like Capoeira with swords. :D There was said to be sparring :( But I really like the clothing. It's different than Japanese.
