Watching The Princess Bride for the first time in 10 years is what got me into HEMA and practicing swordplay, but I can't even remember what sparked my interest as a kid. I'm sure it was a mix of Highlander, Zelda, and playing with sticks in the backyard.

Summed up in two words, Toshiro Mifune. I think I've seen Yojimbo about 100 times since first seeing it in a theater sometime in the 60s.

Started in high school with ADND and highlander. Had mostly display pieces and nothing really high quality. Lost most of them when I enlisted in the Army. After watching hours of Anime and the movie The Last Samurai got me back into the mood for collecting.

Wow, that was a LONG time ago. At 10-12, we were reading LOTR, Conan, and yes. Elric and the black runesword, Stormbringer. There was so much sword stuff going on in the movies and on TV that I don't remember it all. Around 13, a bunch of us got into martial arts, and kendo was popular. A few guys made swords, but my old man didn't let me have one 'til I was 15. He let me buy a .22 when I was 12, and a .30-30 and 12 gauge when I was 14, but he thought swords were dangerous.
Somewhere in my 20's, I lost interest and sold all that stuff. Fast forward to a coupla years ago, and I'm reading zombie fiction with lots of katana involved. Then, a few months ago, I wound up here.

lol bill, you missed out. 30 years ago 5 nights a week at 4:30 after school I was obsessed with this show. Although looking at it now, it's best viewed with child's eyes but nonetheless I still smile when I think about this show Paul

I honestly don't know exactly. I THINK I just always liked the sword, especially medieval cruciform styles...then movies like Excalibur, El Cid, The Highlander, and Conan reinforced it, in a big way. I probably watched Excalibur close to 100 times growing up, no joke. I played some D&D growing up as well, made wooden swords, very interested in Medieval history...all of that came together in a near obsession with the sword.
I don't practice with them, no WMA for me, I really don't cut with them, its the form and function, the lines and ratios, they symbol that a sword is...I love them for those reasons.

Being an Army brat and growing up over in Germany I never had a chance. I was raised on a steady diet of D&D (basic on up) and Sword'n'Sorcery type flicks (Hawk the Slayer, Krull, Beastmaster, Sword and the Sorcerer, Conan, Excalibur, Dragon Slayer...). It didn't help that my mother is a German national who insisted on exposing us to as much culture and history as possible, so weekend tours of castles and museums were pretty regular. I remember going to Schloss Sigmaringen at least 4-5 times because I kept begging my mom to take me there to look at the hall of weapons & armor they have (over 3000 pieces, if I recall correctly).

It was half my love of fantasy fiction, and half my love of martial arts. The reality of functional and affordable production blades has made it possible.

Past Life Experience *cough* Some of my family were recent European immigrants. As a kid I dealt with this weird chaos at family gatherings where some relatives spoke no English and other relations spoke no German, Flemish or Dutch. So it was a bit like Chewbacca and Han Solo- everyone understood everything, but not many had made the effort to be speaking in one language. These Euro relations had some amazing Fairytale books from Europe filled with images of knights with warhorses and swords, beautifully dressed noble ladies and some inferred gruesome Grimm's Fairytale action sequences. Later it was reading LOTR, AD&D, Micheal Moorcock's books, etc. About the time I was losing interest in stuff and getting into girls I remember friends parents commenting on my "German" or "Viking" appearance. I remember quite vividly ringing a doorbell of a friend's home and I was greeted at the door by his mother who told me "You cannot take my son away. You'll have to find someone else to help you raid the coast of England." I was very confused for a moment until I realized what the hell she was on about. Excaliber and Highlander did not help. Neither did those big reference books in the local library full of arms and armour. My first MRL catalogue cursed me forever. Then the discovery of Western Martial Arts put me into chains. I am a sword-thrall. I still ponder whether or not I want to be buried with a sword. I guess it could be worse. I could be a sports fanatic or a Barbeque God. I'll save those things for when WMA finally cripples me.

hmmm... well honestly, I'd have to say my dad got me into katana's swords, he gave me a wall-hanger when I turned 14 (that sword has now been given to my cousin when he turned 14). Excalibur got me into euros and the knights of the round table (always wanted to be a knight). Also can't remember the name of this cartoon but the hero would always say "by the power of grey skull I am ?" then he would have all this power and strength.

When I was five I watched many movies with sword fighting, and martial arts as a main theme. I was fortunate enough to be born in a family that encouraged me to at such a young age to join a dojo, put on a gi and hone my childish play into one of the best martial skills out there imho. So, what one thing turned me onto swords...
