For me, it was the movie "Hawk The Slayer" from 1980. I was 7 years old at the time.
Then the movies "Excaliber" and "Sword Of The Valiant" sealed the deal.

D&D and countless ninja flicks were the first influences for me. Why? as far as D&D, I think it was probably the fact that since we didn't have the swords that our characters fought with in hand, the need for more detailed descriptions really gave us a feeling of attachment and fascination. As far as Ninja flicks.....they were just so cool! It was like combining martial arts, cool costumes, and swords with James Bond gadgets

Apart from the fact that they are just really cool ? Probably my love for Dragonlance and other epic fantasy style books , Wheel of Time especially. Also my love of archery,in particular a nearly 30 year love affair with longbows, seems to just go hand in hand with swords and stuff.

I have been into swords longer than I can remember. My parents tell me I picked up a stick at the ripe old age of 6 months and wielded that as my first sword. I have been playing with toy swords or turning things into toy swords since, getting as many chances to be around real swords as I could my whole life.

Ahhhh Dragonlance. I loved those books and actually started reading them from when the first book was published. I remember the agony of having to wait for the next one to come out and then finishing it in a day only to have to wait again. I also remember my friends and I almost blowing a gasket laughing about what Kit's "crooked smile" might have looked like  maybe something like this :?

For as long as I can remember I've love swords. When I was about to turn ten years old my parents asked me what I wanted for my birthday... of course I asked for a sword. The good parents that they were they purchased a sword for me... a perfectly forged and formed plastic work of art! Oh parents... how you let me down!
How was I supposed to know it's not safe to give a ten year old a sword? After all, many of my friends had already been given shotguns for holidays?! A sword is much safer!
I bought my first sword on my 18th birthday. A cheep a very dangerous "katana" from Smokey Mountain Knife Works. It serves as a reminder of how far I've come...
P.S. Anytime someone asks me what I want for my birthday I tell them, a sword. But I'm sure you can relate.

Those darn ronin warriors. I stayed with my grandmother a lot. She got 6 channels. 2 were Spanish. 2 were news. 1 was nickelodeon. The last was cartoon network. It was destiny.

Being a 90's kid and having an awesome and nerdy father my early influences were from a number of sources. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time I liked the Master sword... But the Biggoron's sword was WAY cooler I thought. Then there were the LoTR movies that were being produced later on and I got into the books as well. There were also the Pirates of the Caribbean that had cool swords and showmanship. Then there were the Conan movies and comics which my dad also had that I enjoyed a lot. Lots of cool swords there. Then there was Braveheart as well for me which I still love to this day, despite the historical inaccuracies and my distaste of the actual "Claymore" Wallace uses. Old tv shows like Xena and Sinbad also helped make their impression on me.
I also tend to love reading and listening about medieval history, especially the warfare and military aspects which contributes, at least I think, to my fondness of swords, sword design, and how they were used in battle.
Now there are more modern means of entertainment that have probably influenced me such as modern video games, movies and shows. (WoW, Diablo, Oblivion, Game of Thrones to name a few.)

Old tales of Arthur and Robin Hood told by my parents at my bedside, an obsession with everything medieval, and... Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Oddley enough for me it was monkey magic that got me started down this path, I remember being 6-7 and running around our farm with a broom handle. Things just escalated from there, from memory the next major influence was Excalibur, the old version.

Lord of the rings. I still think the swords from the film are the most beautiful i'd ever seen and endless drew variations of them in high school. Then i went to engineering college (which are notorious for limited contact with the better gender) and i decided to invest all that money i wasn't spending on a girlfriend on a second childhood instead

Highlander/the sword and the sorcerer/conan/ator the fighting eagle/excalibur/he man/thundercats HOOOOOO  .I also had a slight infatuation with the samurai sword due to lots of ninja films when i was younger (since cured). The sword and the sorcerer and Highlander are the two big ones for me. Hawk the slayer is a true classic, but it got me more interested in archery than swords
