Thanks for the pics and I am looking forward to the next set. So far the only thing that bothers me is the pomel, I hate the machined on a lathe look. Nothing some creative sanding and polishing can't fix Looks like I will be scrutinizing my next check to see if I can fit in an arming sword

I must live close to the SBG Store, because I received my sword before I even got the email from Paul saying it shipped! This is my first sword, but I've been active in studying swords for a couple of years now. I've been looking at several Albion's for about a year, but finally decided that if I was going to be able to really use the sword, I wouldn't want to do it with a $500+ sword. This really isn't a review as I don't have any experience to compare it to, but more of an introduction to the Atrim Practical Longsword (sharp edition). First the measurements: Overall Length: 45 3/8" Blade Length: 36 1/16" Blade Width at Cross: 1 3/4" Fuller Length: 27 1/8" Point of Balance: 7 3/16" +/- 0.25" (from the cross guard) Grip Length: 7 1/8" Pommel O.D.: 1 5/8" Sorry I don't have a scale, so no weight . I don't even want to guesstimate as I don't have a good point of reference. My initial impressions: The sword handles quite well. It's solidly put together and doesn't have any rattling of the components. The blade is well sharped with only a primary bevel. I can't find any machine marks on the sword. The pommel has a couple of defects in it, but they're really minor. Overall I'm initially pleased with the sword. Further cutting will really put this sword to the test. The scabbard is decent. It's a wood core leather covered scabbard. It doesn't have any metal parts, but fits the sword tightly, so overall it's not bad. Now for the part everyone wants, the pictures! I'm am not a photographer, so these pictures suck. I did the best I could though. EDIT: Well, I can't seem to get Picasa to let me show the images in the thread. You'll have to click the links, sorry. picasaweb.google.com/MJDionne/AtrimPracticalLongswordSharp/photo#5185922931177011586picasaweb.google.com/MJDionne/AtrimPracticalLongswordSharp/photo#5185927586921560546picasaweb.google.com/MJDionne/AtrimPracticalLongswordSharp/photo#5185922939766946194picasaweb.google.com/MJDionne/AtrimPracticalLongswordSharp/photo#5185922944061913506picasaweb.google.com/MJDionne/AtrimPracticalLongswordSharp/photo#5185922952651848114

I would recheck that point of balance. We checked every single sword prior to shipping and most were at 6 -6 1/4 with none over 6 1/2 POB.

I got mine by using my finger to balance the blade and then estimating where in the middle of my finger the blade was pivoting. Did you measure from the top of the cross guard? i.e. from the side of the cross that's closest to the tip?

We use a Fulcrum not a finger from the bottom of the Guard.

That explains it then.
I'd say we measured fairly closed to the same values.

How can I pass up 215 bucks for an Atrim with a woodcore scabbard?
Sigh. Looks like I just found my project blade. I really wish it was a type Xa, though. I love the long fuller and the shorter hilt. But this will suffice, yup yup.

It looks beautiful, and the size is just what I hoped for. Now just hope the shipping to Sweden won't take forever xD.

I ordered the Arming sharpened. I would say from looking at the actual pics of the long sword it looks like a tactical in finish but a historical traditional in design configuration. I am eagerly awaiting the delivery of mine.

From the pictures I have to say that the finish is just what I hoped for, I don't like -1700 western swords to shiny.

Both the blade and the guard have a satin finish.
I don't see any tool marks just a clean brushed steel gleam.

OMG, my Albion Crecy just came in...and tomorrow my Valiant Practical (sharp) LS is supposed to arrive. This is going to be a good week. Someday soon, I'll post some side-by-sides of these $700 and $200 pieces. My guess is the Albion will not be > 3x the sword, but it sure is something to behold. Even my wife is amazed at how balanced and responsive it is. I'm confident I'll get more than my $$$ out of both.

You got to admit though, recently the sub $300 medieval swords have been getting a whole lot better. Yep. These new offerings are going to really push the envelope of what our $$$ can get us. What a great time to be buying swords!

It has arrived. My Practical Longsword has been cleaned and inspected and all I can say is if you have a chance to pick on of these great swords up do not hesitate. The sword is very sharp in fact on could say too sharp for hacking through chain mail. But I guess that boils down to personal preference I have yet to cut with it but I can imagine that it will do great. The furniture is well done and looks great as well. Nice satin finish to the pommel and cross guard and the handle is wrapped with leather and has the cord binding marks for added grip. The scabbard is wood core and also is very well done. A great deal considering what you get and the price. Only issue that I have with this sword and has already been pointed out and commented on is that the threaded portion of the tang is welded on. This would be the week part of the sword and if anything were to fail it would probably be this. That being said the job they did welding is very well done and is the finish is ground flush. I will post more stats when I have a chance to take measurements. Blade length in-front of cross guard 36" behind cross guard 36.5" Blade width at cross guard 1.75" cross guard length 8.4" Overall I would definitely recommend this sword based on everything I have seen from it so far.
