The SBG moderation team, along with Paul have been brainstorming about a series of contests and special projects for SBG... stay tuned to hear about some contest ideas that are cooking.
For a SBG project, we wanted something that would be special, something awesome... something every SBGer would be proud to own. This was our idea.
The rolling foothills of North Carolina are home to SBG moderator Avery Pierce. Avery has been known to crank out some pretty cool axes . Avery also is lucky enough to have nearby him some of the premiere hawksmiths in the country. One of these gentlemen is Butch Silver.
Butch , through Twisted Iron Forge , produces high quality knives and hawks, that sell from $200 to upwards of $300 . These are some of the best hawks to be found folks... i know I have done some intensive research since we've been cooking up this idea , and Butch's work stands out among the best.
Butch has agreed to participate in a SBG Handforged Hawk Project.
How It Will Work
Butch will take the lead on the project, to be assisted by Avery. Each tomahawk will be handforged by Butch and Avery will help with finish and handle work , and all around assistance. A SBG stamp will go on each hawk. Hawks will be completed at at least one per week.
Interested parties will Paypal their money to a third party in the forum leadership (Possibly me , Possibly another SBG leader) to hold in escrow. When said member's hawk is completed , approved by Avery and stamped SBG the money will be released and the hawk shipped.
What Will I Get?
Each person that signs on for the SBG Handforged Hawk Project. will recieve one hand-forged tomahawk, created in the North Carolina foothills by Butch Silver and Avery Pierce. In the interest of keeping cost down and streamlining production times , options are being kept to a minimum. At this time we are pretty much set on offering a Spike Hawk , much as pictured. There will be options on the handle.
Each of these hawks will be approved by Avery before shipping, to insure a high level of quality control, and an axe we'll be proud to have the SBG stamp on.
Stats
Not being the maker there is only so much I can tell you , however I can give you some info of a representative model.
These will be made from new reforged 24oz ball-peen hammers. That makes it something like 1080 I believe. Butch uses Differential heat-treating , and polishes and lightly pantinas his hawks.
Another similar hawk by Butch had these stats.
OAL --- 18"
TIP OF SPIKE TO EDGE OF BLADE-- 8 5/8"
BLADE WIDTH 2 1/2"--
BLADE LENGTH EDGE TO HAFT 3 5/8"
Ttl WEIGHT --- ---1 LB..1 OZ..
remember these are hand forged so specs will vary.
What Will it Cost?
A handforged tomahawk from Butch Silver and Avery Pierce will sell to SBGers via this project for $150 plus shipping. This will be a spike Hawk with a shaped hickory handle. The handle can be upgraded to treated curly maple for an additional $25. Considering the quality of these axes , this is a hell of a deal and we appreciate Butch offering this to us. Cheers Butch.
How Long Will it Take?
Well , that all depends how many people sign up. One thing we considered while planning this was timely completion and accountability. While we'd love to have a new SBG project, we'd hate to have a brouhaha like we've seen in the past. At this time, we are planning for a hawk a week. However , we all know , when dealing with items hand done by a human being, life can and often does interfere. With the money being held in escrow pending hawk completion, should the project start to drag on, it will be easy to back out. However, this doesn't mean we want wishy washy buyers, if you buy you commit , unless the project should become considerably derailed ... again life happens and I understand that and will work with SBGers who may need to withdraw for such reasons.
Folks this is just a poll to see how many might be interested in a project like this. Should enough people express interest , the project is still subject to approval by Paul, and possible tweeks and changes to make it as safe and accountable as possible.
Should this work out this is a great chance for us all to get a beautiful , handforged piece of living history for a darn good price, and in a timely manner.
Avery, if I've got any details wrong , please chime in and correct me.
Pleae vote in the poll and discuss in the thread.
What say ye all?
