Camp axe or camp tool should work fine in Aussie. As for timber, yes, nice straight Hickory and really with a nice stain and polish still looks beautiful.

Yep,the specs are pretty close,of course as was said there will be some variations..depending on how the forging and grinding goes, a LOT of grinding on these...but that is what handmade means, no 2 exactly alike....also I'm not as fast as I used to be  Thanks for all the posts and interest

Ok folks... we want to put a 15 hawk cap on this , for the first batch anyway... and we got 15 yes votes , so the project is off to Paul for approval.

Could you elaborate more on the maple vs hickory? From what I gather hickory is heavier but they are both supposed to be american hardwoods no? Is there anything else to consider when choosing between the two?
Also as someone mentioned before a spike on the reverse side might not appeal to some, will there be a hammer option, the spike just makes me nervous in the case of a failed cut.
This looks like a cool project, please keep updating when new info is out and I am definitely down to buy one of these.

Right now, in order to keep everything streamlined, only the spike is being offered. If this goes well on both sides, maybe another batch will be offered, till then the only option is in the handles. When it comes to the differences in the woods, yes they are both hardwood. However the grain structure in Hickory is tighter and more solid. Curly maple is slightly lighter(not by much at all) and each ring could be considered a weak point. Personally, I'd prefer the hickory if I were going to use it often just so I didn't mess up the finish.

Well ... when the "buy it now" goes live , the first 15 are in... so we need to have a discussion about how to fairly do that , with interested members literally all over the world...

Do you have a time frame as to when you will begin accepting orders?

Project is approved and is a go... orders should begin within the next 24-48 hours. Trying to work out shipping and a fair way to handle the order process, with interested parties in so many time / date zones.

Hey Guys I am in...........count me in for a " Hawk" , would prefer the Hammer poll, but Butch if the spike is what you end up giving , I ain't complaining, will fit right in with my Frost River Bush craft pack with the axe sleeve......and hey my son is getting married in January ( as if I need reasons ! )

I will put my hand up too. Will get in for the next run if this all goes ahead and Butch is up for a second run. I myself would not say no to a Hammer-Poll one (better for bushcraft) but the Spike-Poll makes the better fighter for false edge strikes, hooks, rakes, etc.
Could you have to option of having a "Straight" or "Slightly-Curved (pictured)" spike on the back ???? straight spikes tend to get hooked up less.
