This is Micah Posada a Cold Steel Challenge participant who regularly takes top honors in the throwing competitions. I'm seriously reconsidering the 21' rule after observing this :geek:

Knife beats wood board with jumpsuit.
Guy with gun moves while shooting and bullet is way faster than knife

Depends on who's doing the shooting. If it's your typical "gangsta", then he might as well be a wood board in a jumpsuit.

Well, regardless of the tactical adv/disadvantages, it was a pretty solid knife throw, and I can respect that. Dunno about the "always" bit, but I sure as hell wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of that much flying steel.

He needs to throw faster. More airspeed on the knife. As is, too easy to duck or dodge. But he has a good point, otherwise.
I have also, personally seen underhanded throws at that range put a straight blade into the target. Draw and throw in a single motion. The way he threw His knife, I have time to unholster my weapon, even if he does throw it fast enough I can't dodge. 2 motions are 2 motions.

I agree... the throw was not that fast... no reason the guy could not draw and fire in the same time. Like Taran, I HAVE seen faster throws... I have seen people throw smaller knives more quickly with the underhand throw... the single motion of making the throw part of the draw is fast and deceptive... however the knives are smaller and the underhand throw dosn't generate as much power... but still. That vid didn't impress me overly much.

I also agree. I have no experience throwing knives overhand and only a little throwing them underhand, but throwing underhand was comfortable and, with the dagger I used (a very plain 4" dagger with a wood hilt, brass pommel and butt cap) and the way I carried it (on a strap just above my knee with the hilt pointing towards my target), I could whip it out and throw it in a single motion without much regard for proper technique; how much of that was because it was rather heavy in the ass, I can't say, but it had enough force to send the entire blade through a few layers of cardboard. I'd like to try it with a more balanced knife one day. That said, even if the underhand doesn't generate much power, it would still likely cut and distract if nothing else, giving the thrower time to close the distance... Assuming they're not like me and rather, ahem, rotund.

...there's his gun, still in the holster...
Well what, you expect an inanimate object to draw on you?

I love the video's humerous touch. Posada knows, I'm sure, that he'd be considerably more challenged by a sentient opponent. When he pulled the dummy's weapon and stated something to the effect "there's his gun still in the holster", I chuckled.

As did I... and when he said 'Knife beats gun every-time' I outright laughed. I wish that were so, I really do... I've collected swords and knives and the like most of my life... and have never owned a gun. I've always been uncomfortable around them... tho I aim to fix that very soon and become a gun owner. So... when a lifelong fan of bladed weapons like myself, who has no guns, can see that Knife does NOT in fact beat gun every time... well, maybe he should see that too.

Is Micah putting his hands up to surrender?
Nope!

Now that's better... if he proceeded that throw with a raised hands as if in surrender then that throw is both fast and deceptive...

no matter how quick you are, how accurate you are, and how much force you can generate, six shots beats one throw hands down

Yeah, but those six shots don't count for much if your gun's still in your holster and you've got a great bloody knife stuck in your throat.

If he were serious, then I'd like to challenge him with a training knife and an airsoft pistol. I'm sorry, but unless the guy with the knife has the surprise advantage, I don't see his statement being accurate.
If he was kidding, then he needed to add more jest.

Knife guy gets killed every time I'd say. Sure, getting a knife stuck in you like that would probably end up killing you, but instantly? Very doubtful. The guy with the gun would unholster his gun and proceed to shoot you 17 times while he's bleeding to death.

I'd say a paintball gun would be better in this challenge, Greg. With an airsoft pistol, you'd have to trust his word on whether or not he got hit (assuming you were able to get the gun drawn and fired), whereas with a paintball, well, the results are obvious. And they do have paintball markers that are almost identical to real pistols, such as this one: I'd venture to say that might fit most standard holsters (and if not, a special one isn't all that expensive), so you could perform the challenge as if you were actually in a real life-or-death situation, without the messy side effects such as, you know, hacking the body to pieces, cleaning up the blood, finding enough trashbags for the body parts, a shovel to bury them with, and all that unpleasantness.

A thrust requires far less power than a cut. The underhand throw with a straight blade may produce less power than the overhand throw, but it's still going to do plenty of damage.
Getting shot, even 17 times, by a handgun isn't going to kill you instantly, either. Knife, handgun. Meh, basically the same thing when you really come down to it.

There's one major difference, though... You throw one knife and kill your attacker? Good; waste 17 bullets to do the same? Bad.
