Sure, its 8'9"X11'9" with 400+kpsi - 60 Raj I don't know the size of the one she got, but she says it has 700 knots per square inch which, according to her, is pretty good. I just nod and trust that she knows what she is talking about... much like she does when I discus the amount of distill taper present on a blade or some such.

Howler, I do respect your wife for being in the military - just wait a few years until she's a vet, then the real fun kicks in.... (sarcasm)
Still, my wife would have had me hung, drawn, and quartered for spending that kind of money behind her back. But I will agree with what some of the others have said, if the offending rug is high enough quality, than it is an investment. I would be way too paranoid to own something like that myself though. On the other hand I don't even think of what my own wife will drop in a heartbeat on Middle Eastern Dance costuming and accessories. For as skimpy as some of those outfits are, you wouldn't believe the price tags they carry. I'm just thankful my wife is willing to sew her own.

Well, I'm 100% certain that if the shoe was on the other foot, and I lit a match to 5k by buying a sword without even so much as talking to her first, she would flip her lid! She claims she would not, but I would put a wager on it.

I forget where, but I read these words of wisdom in a book once, "Never make a bet you know you are going to lose." I think that saying applies here.

It's hard to put a price on happiness but in this case I guess it cost over five grand. If it truly makes her happy and that makes you happy then I suppose it is worth your shared sacrifice. I have two kids in college with one getting ready to graduate and then start graduate school so student loans are coming due with more to come so I have already spent that amount many times over! It is definitely worth it in my case.

Don't sweat it too much man, it's only money.
I got just under that ammount in a 427 inch small block chevy motor, so it's all just in what you're into.
She's happy, therefore you'll be happy.

On a rug...? I have no idea what to think. But I guess everyone has their hobbies. ;D Heh. Yeah, certainly wouldn;t be MY choice... at that price its not even really gonna be a rug, I mean, there is no way in HELL we are going to put it on the floor and walk on it. Its basicly a really expensive peice of art, as we will likelt seal and fram it to protect it and hang it somewhere. I'm boggled... *I* can not fathom paying that much for a rug. Hell, tho I would WANT to be a sword at that price, I wouldn't, because it represents WAY too much of our total wealth to spend on any single item to me... let alone one I can't use or do anything with. That said, I love my wife, she wanted it, and she works hard at a dangerous job to protect all of us... so while I was stunned and baffled by her choice, I was not, as she thought I would be, angry. I just can't help but think of what I would do with that money rather then buy a hug... a hut tub, a second car, a convertable... or SWORDS. Anything really before a rug. What...you guys wont "chrisine" it when she gets home? Man, with that kind of cash, the first thing I though of was a custom Kat, probably by Sorrells, then off to be polished up nice, some custom fittings and mounting. Then a big box of tatami. mwuahahaha. That would probably burn through it all. /sigh or I could pay off the credit card. LAME!!!

Oh yeah, 700kpsi is excellent, they cap out at a little over 1000kpsi. Do you know if it is new or antique? Either way if it is hand made from iran and larger than 6x9 in good condition she may have made you some money. I have seen 700 kpsi in silk and wool 12x15 go for 25K+ If she only paid 5K then it was either a secret squirrel deal through a friend, the seller didnt know what they were doing or it is made somewhere other than iran by machine not hand. Nevertheless, they are great pieces that last lifetimes, truly "pass down" type stuff.

Persian rugs are rather like antique swords, really. They're never -really- worth the price, but you want it and you will pay it. Both you have to know what you're doing, and you have to examine them both very closely for fakes.
Speaking of which, what's she doing in Iran anyways?

A rug of that kind of price would just make me really paranoid, make sure you hang it on a wall, or have a glass case made for it, then keep on display.

I realized I never did answer the question...
I think I would buy myself a few Synthesizers, A 1000 watt PA system, a new laptop... And that would cover it all I think... ;D (Electronica is mighty expensive to make).

Its new, handmade not mechine made... all the tradditional vegtibale dyes are used and all that... she was able to visit the place where they make them and see how they are constructed...but it is not made in Iran, its made in Turkey. We American's can't legaly travle to and buy products from Iran, much like we can not do with Cuba, due to embargo issues. So, as far as *I* would understand it, that makes it a Turkish rug made in the Persian style... as opposed to a true Persian rug. Its still hand made and crafter and all that... but one can not truely call it a Persian Rug if its not from 'Persia' (Now Iran) could they? So I myself would have no idea how to guess at its value. All I know is the asking price was apparently around 12k and the haggling got it to $5,350. It still hurts my brain.

Well with a knot count that high if it a descent size then 12K sounds right to me. The one I picked up @4k is from iran a little over 20 years old and has silk as well as wool...i have it insured for $20K even though right now they can be had for 12-15k. However, if mine were the same kpsi as yours the price would probably be in the 25k-40k range....just for some perspective. I have seen and put my hands on the product coming from turkey and it is VERY nice, however, I have seen many of them machine made being labeled as hand made. AS long as the homework gets done before the purchase then it should all be a-ok Gotta say though...never expected to be talking about rugs in this forum...lol....although my neighbor does have a toupee.....lmao

Poorly, I'd figure.
Well, that answers my question of how she got a Persian rug; the conception of their value comes FROM that Embargo, much like Cuban cigars. Protip: All the good cigarrillos went to the Dominican Republic after Castro got in.

Howard Clark L6 Katana blade, length 30", then send off to polish and furniture, then I could cut flies, microorganisms, air molecules, or junk cars in half ;D The rest could maybe buy a decent PC gaming system

My wife actualy visited where the rugs where constructed and saw the methods used, so she is sure its hand made... and its a silk on silk, but a lot smaller then yours.... she guesses its about 5 x 3.
