If the scabbard is made of hardwood, it's more likely to scratch vs. a softwood scabbard. Also check to see if the Throat has a metal plate on the opening which may scratch.
For the price of one of the Jin-shi swords, who cares??? It's a tool which historically was going to get really banged up in combat, regardless of how skillful/careful you were.

minute differences on a structural level. Not significant at all in terms of how it affects function. That's what I needed to know and what I was starting to figure based on other comments here. Thanks all of you. As for a hardwood scabbard scratching... I have read about wooden scabbards lined with fur of various kinds. Any thoughts?

If it is done properly and you draw the blade and sheathe it properly there should be no scratching. I've just put a down payment for a twistcore tang jian with short blade and green lacquered handle and scabbard.

Can't wait to see it! I will need to save up for a bit before I can afford my own, but I'm looking forward to ordering it

It may be a bit personal to post up here, so you can send me a PM if you like. I'm asking because I'd like a similar setup in the near future.

Hi Yrx.
I've seen that blade!!! It's just lighting. Typically for a darker color and more visible pattern etching is required.
You can OVERDO etching!!! I did that with my Royal Peony and lemon juice...brown etching, little metal polish fixed it!!!
Of course after stoning a nick away on it, the pattern's all scratched up where the nick was!!!! ;D

How long did you wait for this jian? I ordered mine about a month ago and the wait is killing me.

How long did you wait for this jian? I ordered mine about a month ago and the wait is killing me. LOL You poor thing. I don't know how long Pirate waited for his, but I placed my order in October. It was close to being finished in December when a forging flaw was discovered and the blade had to be reforged. My new date is April 10th. Don't let this discourage you, though. Take it as a sign of good QC! I've read and viewed amazing reviews of Jin-Shi swords and Garrett's customer service is top-notch!

Unfortunately it took me almost half a year of wait for it to come. Even though the wait is excruciating it is really worth it once it arrives to your door. Hopefully your waiting period is shorter than mine. My only complaint is minor fit and finish (cosmetic) issue with the bronze casting which is easily fixed with a needle file.

Shipping mine got held up by the Beijing Olympics for a couple extra months. I managed to survive....and the wait was worth it!

How long did you wait for this jian? I ordered mine about a month ago and the wait is killing me. Mine was ordered around June. I would have gotten it sooner than march (around novemberish) but the forge accidentally made my blade as a dao instead of a jian, and I agreed to wait longer. Since I waited so long for my sword Garrett had the blade made in folded steel (originally I went with just DH rather than DH/folded due to money issues). I am very pleased with the result. Usually Garretts turnaround is something like 3-4 months iirc.

Thanks omegapirate. I really hope mine would be worth the wait and the money. I ordered a han Jian DH/folded with the best wood also. Fully loaded.

Oh my gods... I've been away too long from this forum. The pretty pieces I've been missing out on. Definitely a nice looking jian man. And a 40" blade to boot? Damn!

Hey, OmegaPirate. Are you planning on doing a review? I would love to see more about this piece and get your thoughts on how the longer than normal blade handles. Maybe even get to see a video? ;D

Probably after April, since my exams and numerous projects will be out of the way.

I have also considered this sword omegapirate2000 what is your intended purpose for this, it is way to cool, artistic for patrol or everyday cutting. That is why I haven't made the step myself, at this point.

I doubt I'll be doing any cutting with the sword, but theres no doubt in my mind that it's up to the task. For the moment it is a rather attractive furnishing for my desk.

For those of you contemplating ordering from Garrett/Jin-Shi, let me throw my encouragement into the mix. I got a custom blade from him a while back and am preparing to order another. I posted pics of mine back then, and if you want to see what I got from him, here is the link: /index.cgi?board=chineseswords&action=display&thread=7511&page=1It has become my favorite sword. -- Richard
