I know Long Quan means that the blade was made in the style of the old Long Quan forge weapons, the Ming style is the "ace of Spades" type guard, and Qing Has the horns of the hilt pointed away from the hand. That's the extent of my knowledge. I would love if Sichea to repeat what he said without the Japanese terms as well so I could understand what he was saying. What we really need are either Garrett or Gundoggy chiming in here to explain this. Those are the two that know what the heck they're talking about.
Every time I do a search on the history of Chinese swords, I keep getting the same article by Phillip Tom, Thomas Chen's site, or Seven Stars trading.

Hey it took me months to get that much. There's just not much about it written on the web in English, which unfortunately is all I speak. (except for a smattering of Spanish that cannot be used in polite conversation)

anyone thought about differential hardening on a jian? I'm wondering if it is worth the extra price.

The Han jian I have on order is supposed to be differentially tempered I'll let you know my observations when I get it.

I'm considering going with the twistcore option on mine, just a matter of working out what I can justify and what I can't.

What's the functional difference between twistcore and pattern-welded (which I'm assuming the Steel 2 Option is)?

it is the same thing basically, the steel 2 option is just folded steel, and Garrett does not yet have pictures of it up on his site so I asked him if he could do an HD vid of it and put it up on youtube or something. The price he is offering twistcore for is more of a bargain than just about anything I've seen in the sword world of late.

Man, Bloodwraith, I was envisioning a twist-core blade for my future green dragon Tang as well. Are we on the same wavelength or not? I've got to think of something to differentiate mine from yours...

Heh, definitely on the same wavelength I think, though I have been wanting a twistcore since Garrett and I have been talking about them back before he even started his company. Ask him if he can do it in hello kitty theme, that would differentiate them

mmmm twisty goodness;
Definitely have to pay a bit more and get that option, granted I could buy a sword for the same price but that is just all kinds of sexy.

I was really liking the look of the twistcore, but I want functionality as well as elegance and if pattern-welded is a better steel than twistcore...
My other concern was where Garret's forge has gotten on detailed furniture in the last year or so. Last I talked to him his stuff was rather plain. I definitely want some detail to the feathers and such on my furniture...

Do you know what you are even talking about? What makes you assume that twistcore is of an inferior quality in terms of functionality? Garrett is all about functional chinese swords, just because something is harder to do doesn't mean that it is inferior quality.

No, actually, I'm not certain. That's why I asked earlier what the functional differences between pattern welded (Steel Option 2) and Twistcore were. I want the better steel, if there is one. Can't say as I've ever sen a thread comparing the qualities of each.

twistcore and pattern welding are both ways of manipulating the appearance of the pattern seen on the steel. They don't affect performance or function at all, just how it looks. What affects performance is tempering/hardening of the blade.
Oh wow, so Garrett offers Twistcore now? I definitely want a jian or dao from him now!

The steels are the same in terms of quality, there isn't one steel better than the other, though twistcore is the harder to do correctly. Pepperskull: Yep, he sure does and wait til you find out the price for it, unbe-freakin-lievable!

I was under the impression that they were different ways of assembling the separate pieces of steel into a blade and therefor had significant differences on the structural level. ...Of course, this might well still be true and still have no difference at the functional level...

minute differences on a structural level. Not significant at all in terms of how it affects function.
