Tom, Darnit! I need a scale to measure small weights. My bathroom scale doesn't cut it. And I hate that thing anyway. It lies to me. I know I don't weigh that much! Anybody know a cheap but accurate scale I can get? I can say it is very light. Not much over 2 pounds. I recently picked up a Windlass Type XIV (they finally fixed the name) and I can tell you the VA is way lighter. KOA lists the weight of the XIV as 2lb 10oz. The POB is 5". And it makes a sweet sustained "ting" when cutting. I'll get the exact weight when I get a scale. Edited to add: KOA lists the weight of the Arming word at 2lbs 5.4oz. Also, they say POB is 41/2 inches and rechecking mine carefully shows that to be accurate. thanks so much man. hey if you want a good scale to weigh swords go to your local Walmart or sporting goods store and get a fisherman's scale. one of the ones you hold in one hand and has a hook to hang the fish from to see if it is legal. that's what I use and it's great. and they're cheap too.

I wish that there were more places near me dedicated to SCA or something. Down in Georgia there isn't much.

Heh... Tom and his weighing everything. Ya gotta watch out for this guy, he has OCD issues with weighing swords. When I brought my swords to his cutting party, he brought out his little fishermans scale and proceded to weigh (and write down the weight of) every single sword I had brought with me... and that was quite a few swords. ;D

Well Marc, I live all the way down south in the small, country Seminole County. Almost in Florida and Almost in Alabama, but just enough in Georgia to where everything is about farming and agriculture for the most part. I know that this is rushing it, but I am thinking that I might want to get a blunt sword or something that I can use to practice longsword techniques by myself. There is nobody nearby that I could train with, but I don't want to cut myself due to lack of experience. It was just a thought. I am going to get my other swords first though, because I might decide that I don't want to get into all that fancy stuff after I handle my swords.

I think your latest plan is a pretty good idea, and I agree that getting something blunt to practice with is good to do. I'm doing something somewhat similar though on a lower budget. First I got a blunt longsword to practice with (the Windlass War Sword) and later a one handed sword (Windlass Type XIV) to see what I like and to get used to swinging a sword around without too much risk of cutting myself. It turns out that starting with something blunt was a good idea because I once had the guard of my type XIV catch on my jacket, which casued the blade to be driven into my left forearm pretty hard. Had it been sharp I expect it would have been a nasty cut. Anyway, now that I'm more comfortable with swinging a big chunck of steel around I'm going to get my first sharp sword, and get one that's of a higher quality than what I started with. In this case that's going to be the VA Crusader. Getting some cheaper swords to start with to find out what you like or don't like in a sword from experience is probably the safer way to go, since you don't want to spend all your money on a single sword only to find out once you hold it that it doesn't suit you very well. Besides, it's not like you can ever have too many swords, right?

Humm doesn't Jason from AoV live in northern florida? Maybe you should try and talk to him about a chance to meet up. Very nice fellow.

Well Sean, I learned a lot about production swords and consistancy and a lot of other cool things by studying your swords and weighing them it was very informative and I'm glad you let me do it, that was very good of you.
Eruialsul, mr. you ARE my hero for going that route. I aplaude your sensibility and wisdom. you get at least a +1 from me for that move even though the universe has already rewarded you by letting you avoid a nasty cut. Blunts of any kind are SUCH a good idea for EXACTLY this reason. I don't care if you unscrew a push-broom handle and duct tape a bit of hose across one end for a cross guard and practice as long as you have something vaguely sword-like to swing it will help. of course the closer to a real sword it is the better. I wish more folks new to sword did this. though it sounds like you picked some pretty decent swords to take as blunts. everybody loves that windlass type XIV, and after handling (and weighing) Shadowhowler Sean's I can't blame them. get a file and some sand paper and sharpen that sucker up and you'll have a great little one hander. hey I've got a sharpening tutorial in my signature!

I wish that the new VA swords would get released already. I hate this waiting business, even though it is worth it.

I can not afford any swords at the moment... so I hope nothing I want gets released anytime soon... because then I'll want to buy it, even tho I can not afford it, and my wife will kick my ass so hard that my Dad will feel it 3k miles away.

I'm wondering if it would be a good choice on my part if I did get the Crusader instead of the arming sword. I honestly think that the Crusader looks ten times better, and it has its own belt with a beautiful scabbard. The problem would be that I might not be able to get the Atrim if I do that. Part of me belongs in Middle Earth, and part of me belongs in the Holy Land. What do you think?

the Atrim can wait man, get the crusader, you'll love it. in a year or two or three you'll be ready for an Atrim and will have built up the money and know better what you want. no need to rush get the multiple cool V.A. swords and be happy.

I know that I will be happy with it, I am just wondering if I should go ahead and get it instead of the arming sword. That would mean that I would definately have to wait until possibly next summer to get a more expensive sword like an Atrim. I don't think it will matter that much though, since I am going to wait until the new VAs come out before I get a sword anyways, and after I do get them I will need to actually use them enough to learn what I want in my next sword. The new signatures are supposed to come out at the end of summer, I think. So even if I did get the arming sword instead of the crusader, I would still have to wait a while before getting another sword. Of course, if it did come down to me picking only one signature model I would get a two handed sword, because if I had to choose between being a crusader and an awesome Middle Earth warrior, I would choose the Middle Earth warrior.

I understand where you are coming from Jonathan. the reason I say go ahead with the Crusader is it sounds like you are about to sacrifice a lot of fun for the chance to maybe get that mythical 20% wich you won't need anyway. you will really enjoy the Crusader, I reccomend that you go ahead and get it along with the signature longsword you like best and have yourself a lot of fun and enjoyment with your first swords. then stash the left overs aside to add to the pile next time you get a job (next year maybe) and then after that get a REALLY NICE sword armed with more knowledge of what you like best. don't sacrifice your fun chasing that mythical 20% there will be time for that 20% later, have fun now.

I know what you mean Sean. it's kinda strange carrying on a conversation with the same person on two different sites. but for you, I'll do it.
