I wonder if RicWilly will get the Actium. He already has around eleven gladii. Pretty soon there will be at least one review of every VA signature sword.

If I were getting a gladius, which I plan to do "eventually" I'd probably get the Actium, since it's by far the nicest looking one (to me) that I've seen yet.
And thanks Tom. I tend not to be terribly careful about things in general, so it takes a conscious, extra effort to keep all my limbs attached at times.

no Eruialsul, thank you. I have been preaching that idea for a long time and I felt like no one was listening, and here you do it out of the blue all on your own because you thought it was a good idea, and even have a story to tell about how it worked out for the good. yeah man, you earned my respect and gratitude. now spread the word there are other who need to hear it. Conscious effort is exactly what sword safety needs. or to quote Alestair Moody, "Constant vigilence!" all too often we forget.

I don't really know what to do from now until the new swords come out.

hang out, read, study, learn about swords. look for some modern books on swordplay there's quite a few out lately. find an old broom handle and duct tape a piece of garden hose to it for a cross guard and take some practice swings. get some wood and cut out a longsword. buy a shinai for $20 and practice with that. just cause you don't have a sword doesn't mean you can learn to use one.

What exactly is a "shinai", and where can I acquire one?

It's a Japanese practice sword mainly used in Kendo training. They are constructed out of bamboo with leather wrap usually.

since they are straight and generally more longsword-sized they work great for longsword training too. many video stores will even have them in their anime sections. they cheap for sure but if you are just going to do dry handling and not hitting anything they are fine. no need for the more expensive tournament grade ones for forms and balance training. I even like to tape and pad them up to add weight until they are real sword weight. in my videos with Hiroshi and I sparring you can see some of these.

I used to have some epic sparring sessions with some of my friends with shinai... ah, I remember the brusies so fondly.

Thank you all for the informatin. Does anyone know where I can get one for the lowest price? Richard (Sword Nation above...) was selling some really cheep awhile back, I picked up a couple. Dunno if he has any more. You can find em on Ebay pretty cheep from time to time as well.

If your getting some shinai for WMA, then these might be a good idea as well. They balance a shinai closer to western swords...although I am unsure of how the sword nation´s shinai will fit these. I use the cheap budk shinai and they work...but required some modification on my end. Quite useful for training...although the weight is lower then it should be and it doesn´t bind right. And for sparring, these are great because of the safety factor of these over wood or steel blunts...especially if you don´t have a teacher and your starting out. You should still use masks, gloves, cup and what not. www.ardenwoodforge.com/html/hilts.html
