The first thing that comes to my mind is a tomahawk. I think it's really gonna depend on the size and condition of the spokes. This could turn into an interesting project.

Marc, Thanks for taking the time to give us a real comparable impression of this blade. After seeing and reading plenty of your impressions, i'm stoked with your views of this blade.
Ricky, After seeing the videos, i'm completely confident in your relationship with your forge, and your ability to make this thing right. I was excited before, but after seeing a couple of Marc's pics im absolutely horny now. With a proper tsuka, thats gonna be sweet.

Sounds like your friend has spent too much time on skyrim. And at the risk of sounding harsh, i would ask whether or not your friend's "attitude" and expectations really stand to benefit your own training. I'm all for clowning around, but you seem interested in swordsmanship and not playing dress up. I'd hate to see all this effort lead to disappointment for you, but then again,........every hero needs a sidekick right?

I've been thinking about some creative saya covering with some fish skin. I first ran across some a few years ago when looking for seat leather for a cycle project i was building. I wanted to do a euro scabbard, but all the hides were too small. I was quite surprised how thin, strong and supple it felt compared to snakeskin. If you had a piece big enough for a full wrap, i think it could be spectacular. Now that i'm getting into katana again, i see many more uses for fish, toad/frog,eel etc. I had a pair of sharkskin boots that were actually less tactile than same with a grainy, tacky feel kinda like very fine wet/dry sandpaper. I look forward to seeing where this ends up.

I like this design alot! Everything about it piques my interest,.......except the feather and pendant. For me i would prefer the feather and pendant dangling (if they must dangle) from the scabbard. Aside from imparting a chinese feel for me, i'd also not want the chain/cord to interfere with unsheathing. Too much to get tangled in a coat,on a belt, dagger etc.etc.etc. If it were mine, If on the scabbard, the cord/chain could be shorter/tighter to the scabbard, and the charm could be used somewhat like a bolo tie around your feather(s). Aside from that, i am liking this design alot!! I love the asymetrical approach, the blade looks to have a lust for blood.

As far as black metals go, I hink its fair to say that there is not really a "darker" metal to be had. Any steel resultig in a black finish is pretty much surface treated in some way. One thing i wanted to mention as an option, especially if a custom blade is in the works, would be to leave some firescale on the blade after HT. This would be similar to the black finish on my wraith sword from Brenno at Fable Blades. The blade was then chemically blued for a contrasting black/blue black look. The bottom line is, if you're looking for "pure" black, you are really limited to surface coatings that will impart a VERY modern and somewhat cheesy look (IMHO). Cold Bluing, heat bluing and firescale are the only methods i've seen yet that seem appropriate for a functional sword. Scratches can always be touched up, or the blade redone to keep it nice, but i have yet to see any scratches on my dark fable. I've included a link to Brenno's site so you can see the finished look. My cam is down too, otherwise i woud have taken some nice glamour shots for ya. www.fableblades.com/ShadowRazor.html

Just wanted to post up and say that md02geist is a fair trader, good communicator and stand up guy. No worries dealing with him. my blade was packaged well and got here pretty quickly. I'll keep my eyes open and if I get the chance, will deal with him again.

I think if you talked to the folks at KoA ahead of time, and made an appointment, they might be more willing than you think, especially if you mentioned that you are looking for a few friends within an enthusiasts community. Let them know in advance, and they might set the requested items aside so you can take pics, and handle them all without repeatedly approaching their salespeople. It's just a matter of convincing them that it's for their convenience first.

pics would help for sure. Is the blade steel? My initial thought is probably not, but i could be wrong. Your descrition of the blade leads me to think its just a wallhanger type tourist bauble. You'll find that most recommendations here will revolve around functional swords. I cant say for sure that yours is not functional, but i'm very doubtful. You can check places like budk, trueswords, cheaperthandirt and a whole host of other sites for the Kat. You could also try getting a hold of the shop you got the wak. from if you had their card or remember their name. If you could find out the manufacturer of the wakizashi, you could also then see if you can find some of their distributors/retailers. If it were mine and i wanted to keep it as a reminder of my time in Kyoto, i'd probably get a frame, a decent border and some decent paper to recreate the tiger artwork and display it with he wakizashi on a stand.

is a cheness tenchi (used) worth 100-150.00? FWIW, i got my VA1601 to my door for 150.00
eventually, I would like to upgrade fittings/tsuka to premium materials, do my own engraving, etching, polish and have a nice daisho, but for now I'm really concerned with blade quality. You guys have given me lots of avenues to look at and its appreciated.

I just had to say that Sho Kasugi was my favorite ninja actor when i was a kid!! Seeing him mentioned in the OP really brought back memories of my youth. Sitting around the TV with my best friend drinking JOLT cola, and surrounded by all manner of flea market ninja gear!! Lol, I even used to sit there watching while i used the Bill "Superfoot"Wallace stretching machine!!

Thanks for all the help guys, it's really appreciated. I'm not married to the idea of DH, but like the idea of somewhat matching the hamon of the VA. I'd rather have no hamon than a cosmetic like you see on so many ebay blades. I looked at some cheness 9260's, and had them marked as a standby if i couldnt find a blade more towards my preferences. I'd like a beefier blade with some niku, as i'm just a beginner, but for balance and handling i'd go with recommendations from you guys. I've seen alot of you posting around, and have learned alot already. I'd like to start some backyard tameshigiri, and have started looking for someone who offers lessons in my area, so i dont mind spending a little bit for a blade that will last a while.
SHOBOSHI - DF is dynasty forge?? is their heat treat something hat would make the blade more resistant to taking a set on a bad cut??
another qestion,.......does mokko refer to the style of tsuba and fittings?

I'm looking for a little help with a ko-katana recommendation. At first i was looking for a wakizashi to match my VA1601 katana, but after researching, and finding most tsuka too short, i believe i'm looking for a ko-katana. The closest i've seen so far is a munetoshi mokko katana, but have yet to see it in ko-katana. The fittings are as close a match to my va as i've found so far, and they'd be fine for me. I was hoping someone could rcommend a decent ko katana with similar fittings that is differentially hardened with bohi. I'm still pretty new at the japanese sword game, and would appreciate any recommendations you guys could offer. I've included a link for reference,..thanks in advance for your help. www.swordnarmory.com/Handmade-Mu ... -236br.htm
