I'm looking for a little help with a ko-katana recommendation. At first i was looking for a wakizashi to match my VA1601 katana, but after researching, and finding most tsuka too short, i believe i'm looking for a ko-katana. The closest i've seen so far is a munetoshi mokko katana, but have yet to see it in ko-katana. The fittings are as close a match to my va as i've found so far, and they'd be fine for me. I was hoping someone could rcommend a decent ko katana with similar fittings that is differentially hardened with bohi. I'm still pretty new at the japanese sword game, and would appreciate any recommendations you guys could offer. I've included a link for reference,..thanks in advance for your help. www.swordnarmory.com/Handmade-Mu ... -236br.htm

Been looking and aside from Cheness, there's still not a lot of companies doing Ko-Katanas. Most are fairly expensive. I'd like to get a Cheness Kaze Ko-Katana.
Here's some of note.
Munetoshi- Probably good, but expensive. Dynasty Forge- Probably great, but also fairly expensive. Hung Shing TS- Probably good, but I'm not very sure of availability.

Well... the cheness oniyuri is very similar to a ko-katana... and it's a freaking BLAST to swing... found out the guy down the road has one and he let me play around with it for a few cuts.

I don't know of anything that'll get you fittings like that. Not even sure where you could find some to mount yourself. Munetoshi has one ko kat that I've aware of, the nishoku, but it may be too pricey for you.
If you can remount, the kaze ko would be a great option. And even though it's not DH, I'd also recommend the DF model because their heat treat is just incredible.

Thanks for all the help guys, it's really appreciated. I'm not married to the idea of DH, but like the idea of somewhat matching the hamon of the VA. I'd rather have no hamon than a cosmetic like you see on so many ebay blades. I looked at some cheness 9260's, and had them marked as a standby if i couldnt find a blade more towards my preferences. I'd like a beefier blade with some niku, as i'm just a beginner, but for balance and handling i'd go with recommendations from you guys. I've seen alot of you posting around, and have learned alot already. I'd like to start some backyard tameshigiri, and have started looking for someone who offers lessons in my area, so i dont mind spending a little bit for a blade that will last a while.
SHOBOSHI - DF is dynasty forge?? is their heat treat something hat would make the blade more resistant to taking a set on a bad cut??
another qestion,.......does mokko refer to the style of tsuba and fittings?

I have the Cheness and like it a lot. It's a good choice if you do end up going that route.
And completely off the subject, it's good to see someone local on here. The only Buffalo area person I have seen on here so far.

Yes, DF is dynasty forge. Sorry.
And yes, DF heat treat should make it less likely to take a set, although with a shorter blade I don't think you'll have to worry about it as much as with a longer one. At any rate, my 'opinion' is the DF heat treat is fantastic. My top pick for TH blades. Aaron Justice did a destructive type vid with a DF musha that should be buried here somewhere or on youtube.
Mokko would refer to the tsuba shape.

Both versions of the Munetoshi Nisshoku are great swords.I love mine.Im not sure if they have any of the cheaper models left(around $175),maybe drop Greg an email at SnA and ask.I know sometimes they have pieces with small defects they set aside. DF by all accounts make some of the toughest kats on the market.I know by how Shoboshi talked of how his handled the bamboo I sent him,the temper is top notch. Hung Shing TS makes great laser sharp cutters, but they do lack some strenght at the edge because they are designed to laser through tatami.Ricky has designed another kokat, his Lion Dog,which I think is more of a niku blade.Maybe ask him about that one.

is a cheness tenchi (used) worth 100-150.00? FWIW, i got my VA1601 to my door for 150.00
eventually, I would like to upgrade fittings/tsuka to premium materials, do my own engraving, etching, polish and have a nice daisho, but for now I'm really concerned with blade quality. You guys have given me lots of avenues to look at and its appreciated.
