That looks exactly the same as my first sword I bought for iaido back in the 90's - if the tsuba is square with a mountain on one side and a wave pattern on the other I'd say it's the same sword ,a stainless steel el cheapo non tempered slo ,the one time a friend of mine attempted to cut with it he bent the blade  here a photo of mine

Thought I'd post this as an option for anyone in Australia that wants something similar to the Harbour freight 1x30 inch belt sander for sharpening their blades, bit more expensive than the HF model but it comes with a 5 inch disk sander as well ,(I've been looking at it for my ship modelling but the sharpening options a bonus ) www.hobbytools.com.au/benchtop-m ... 5-x-762mm/ disclaimer - I've got nothing to do with Hobby tools other than a long time happy customer!

Wouldn't surprise me ,there were burrs around the holes which I sanded down ,that was one of the things I'd read about that I was looking for when I pulled it apart.

Decided to take my sword apart to check under the hood as it were and ran into the Tsuka not wanting to come off issue ,but after a couple of light taps on the tsuba with a block of wood it came off ,found out why it was tight when I accidently turned the tsuka upside down and a pile of crud came out  (see photo below),I'm suprised it went on in the first place with the stuff that came out.. other than the crud everything else looked pretty good ,or atleast nothing obvious to a noob like me.

I was looking through the Huawei and the Swordsmith668 stores looking for a Katana to buy with Birthday cash from my family and my in laws when I came across this sword www.ebay.com/itm/HAND-CARVED-SAY ... OC:AU:3160 ,it was love at first sight ,226 Australian dollars later I'm now waiting for a long thin package to be heading my way in the next couple of days. From what I've read here and in other places I should be getting a decent blade for my money but I'm also getting the bonus of a piece of art as well

My first "swords are not toys" moment and a lesson that will not be forgotten! Last few days I've been slowly putting an edge on my Viking sword ,there's enough of an edge now from the filing to start working it on a stone - there's a definite edge along most of the blade now and I thought I'd try it an a bottle just to see if it would cut and this is where things could have gone very wrong Grabbed a 2ltr milk bottle ,set it up and took a swing ,wasn't expecting any result other than knocking the bottle flying so swung a little too hard - Blade went through the bottle like it wasn't there,(didn't feel any impact at all),kept swinging through it's arc till it hit the inside of my left arm just above the wrist ,(luckily with a not so sharp part),and the impact made me drop the sword. End result was a swollen wrist and a bad bone bruise on my Radius but it could have been much worse - lessons learned are expect the blade to cut from now on ,Don't overpower the swing ,wear the glove I bought for extra grip and Most Important KEEP my left arm well out of the way!!!!!

Worked out for the best ,just my spine hates me today for all the twisting yesterday while filing,(got enough metal in my lower back to make a small knife ) I wondered what type of leather it was ,didn't look like cow.It does feel nice in the hand though.

Today's chapter is titled "Why does plan A always suck?"... Just spent the morning hand filing an edge onto my sword with a whacking great draw file despite saying I wasn't going to do it ,turns out my Dad didn't ever think there'd be a requirement to put an edge on a nearly meter long Viking sword when he set up his workshop so there wasn't enough room to use the bench grinder (personally I think it's poor planning on his part but oh well ) Hard parts done now it's time for the real sharpening to begin - I'll be happy with a paper cutting edge but aiming for a shaving one like my knives.

I think I'm doomed, got my first "Real" weapon just over a week ago ,(a Hanwei short bearded axe),and keeping with the theme I've just spent a chunk of my tax return on a Deepeeka 5 lobed Viking Sword same as the one here viewtopic.php?f=10&t=17089&hilit=deepeeka+5+lobed+viking+swordSeems to be an ok blade from what I've read and as a bonus I really like the look of it ,it looks exactly like what its supposed to be ,a lean efficient weapon of war. Should have it in the next couple of days ,can't wait

As the title says I've just bought my first real large edged weapon ,a Hanwei Short Bearded axe - went to my local medieval fair and came away wanting to get an axe so started hunting the net for something ,I've got a collection of knive's I've picked up over the years but never anything larger than a very cheap Katana I used for Iaido. I found this forum after I'd decided on the Hanwei and the avery reviews for the short and the larger bearded axes sold me
